  1. If you re-read my post, you would see that I said not everybody that goes there is racist and that wasn't what I was saying. At the same time they have had some problems involving racism in the past couple years and It's something I would hope athletes are taking into consideration when deciding where they want to spend the next 4 to 5 years of their life.
  2. My question about SMU is the fit. Growing up in Dallas, I've experienced the culture and it's just not the right fit for everybody. We've seen the news stories of racism and other types of discrimination going on at SMU. That alone would make SMU a "no" for me. I know not everybody who goes to SMU is like that, I've known good people who went there, but it's still on going problem they've had.
  3. This happened both of SL's first classes. I expect us to get 1 or 2 three star guys at the last second who had their other offers dry up. We'll see how things play out.
  4. I'm assuming the staff would rather just get sure targets. If you trust your evaluation skills, they do, you don't really care about other people's opinions. The staff has proven more often than not that they can evaluate talent. Offensive linemen just take longer to develop. Give it some time. They've done a good job with other positions. No reason it won't be the same with offensive linemen...
  5. I don't want to start any arguments but this is a legitimate question. You've brought up in other threads that we have too many scholarship OL but are now asking we take a chance on 1-2 O linemen. Are wanting to take chances on those 1-2 players as PWO? If they don't want yo be here unless there's a scholarship, are you wanting them to be put on scholarship if the staff truly believes the player is a diamond in the rough? We can't take less scholarship O Linemen and then take some huge chances on 1-2. Just can't have it both ways. As I see it, most OL prospects at the G5 level are hopefully diamond in the rough prospects because there just aren't that many big, strong, smart kids wanting to take on the contact needed to play college football and those that do are being swooped up by p5 schools.
  6. Read the SB nation article I posted about it being the hardest position group to project and not expecting to see production from a player until year 3(RS So year). Also, we have the same amount on scholly as Bama and have less per position as we have running backs (just an example). You're looking at it as 1/5 of scholarships but it includes 5 positions. 3-4 scholarships per position is the norm.
  7. Per this 2017 SB nation Alabama I counted 18 OL on the roster all of which were on scholarship. Obviously SEC school and Alabama but they're a blue chip program so I figured they would be a good indication of what's appropriate. https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2017/7/11/15952484/alabama-crimson-tide-football-finds-its-way-to-85-man-roster-2017-blueshirt-grayshirt Per this SB nation article OL is also the hardest postion group to recruit so we (g5) need to take chances on more players if we want a competitive OL. https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/college-football-recruiting/2014/1/27/5330708/college-football-hardest-position
  8. I'm not in the know of other programs but I would think it to be normal. 18 scholarships in a position group of 5 is 3-4 scholarships per position which is what you would expect for quarterback and I think less than what we have for running back. I think people are complaining because of where we are on the defensive side of the ball. Just because we are lacking on that side doesn't mean we shouldn't go after the guys protecting our all conference QB. Plus when you consider how many injuries occur on the OL it's probably not a bad place to have depth. If we can control the game on the offensive side of the ball we can relieve pressure off our defense minimizing fatigue thus injury risk. But what do I know... Maybe somebody can bring actual known numbers into this.
  9. So basically the LaTech offer is worth more to him than a UNT offer since he isn't willing to risk their offer to see what Denton has to offer. If he was legitimately wanting to be here he would have taken the risk and visited with us knowing our offer would have still been there even if LaTech's wasn't. That would have been fine with him but it isn't.
  10. I'm sure it helps that the weather is beautiful today.
  11. Interesting that they bring up FAU and Driskel when he won't be back next year... Lovely picture too.
  12. I get Charlotte but just a few years ago we were complaining about not getting FAU and FIU. Now that FAU is good, we don't want them. Can't always have it our way. Other than Charlotte and ODU (depending on how their QB develops), the East is tough. I'm just happy we also didn't get FIU or Marshall.
  13. He'll be there Friday.
  14. Player pages are still available long after they're gone. Example: http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/brandin_byrd_847230.html
  15. Good for them. Hopefully he works out for them and they can win some games next year (just not against us). 0-12 is not a good look for CUSA.
  16. I think people are excited, they're just expressing their concerns with the OL group as a whole in the wrong thread. Once again, another thread derailed when a new topic could have easily been started. I can't wait to see what he does here.
  17. Let's see what they can do.
  18. I'm going to take a wild guess and say we aren't the only school with a coach that has decent connections but it's nice to see us join the party. If he can pull off something like that, let's do it. I think his youth (33) sets him apart from the others a bit so it'll be interesting to see how he uses that. Overall, we seem to have a young and energetic staff who players are excited to play for once they decide to come here. Quite the 180 from where we were 2-3 years ago.
  19. Just thought I would mention, Coach Choice posted the video below. The video was retweeted by rapper T.I. so it's posted on T.I.'s official page and available to his 8.2 million followers. It was also retweeted by several NFL players. The ones I could find are Andy Levitre (OL, Falcons), Fred Jackson (RB, Bills for 8 years, now free agent), Brandon Boykin (CB, Ravens), CJ Spiller (RB, Chiefs) and NBA player Thaddeus Young (Pacers). Just thought I would mention it since it's quite a bit of publicity for UNT. All of these guys have pretty strong Twitter followings. This may not mean much to most of you, but any recruit or fan stumbling onto their pages will see UNT there.
  20. I'm excited to see him perform at the next level. Now that we've signed 2 Illinois targets who the illini were pushing hard for, I can't help but think we might have had a legitimate chance at landing him. Regardless, I wish him the best. Plus I work in the area where Bishop Dunne is so it would be nice to see a local kid have some success.
  21. @greenminer sorry for the inaccuracy. Still a lot to put on a kid with everything else they are required to do.
  22. You're probably right. I was told by a few student athletes I knew at UNT and some I know now from other schools that they can't have jobs but what I'm finding is they are allowed to as long as the job is not based on athletic ability and they are paid comparable to the going rate for the industry in the area. What I'm assuming the people I know/knew meant is they did not have time to maintain a job and being a student athlete. During the spring they still have time consuming schedules and during the summer still have athletic requirements but I guess some can make it work.
  23. I really didn't want to get into this but I will (to an extent) since you brought it up. I've seen people mention that they wish they had been offered a free education for playing a game and that the players are essentially taken care of. This notion is false. The stipends these players receive are so minimal it's not even funny. We're talking a few hundred a month usually totaling $2000-$5000 (per reports I've read) per academic year. These players need clothing, entertainment, and other experiences outside of just being a college athlete. They aren't allowed to have jobs, not even a part time job, yet work 40-50 hour weeks year round while having to maintain academics. Heck, they even play/travel holidays. What they "receive" is a $0 balance due at the end of the ride. Mostly every penny they "earn" is spent before they see it. So when it's all said and done, after work days usually starting around 6 am and having your entire day planned for you, travel and play on Saturdays, recovery Sundays, usually amounting to 40-50 hour work weeks (I will cite sources if requested), they make school education plus cost of living (room & board) and $5000 max a year with no ability to earn extra on their own during the summer. What does this look like, if you're at UNT or most Texas public schools? About $25,000 a year, or about $12/hour for 40 hour work weeks (no OT pay). I challenge people on this board to ask college athletes about the life of a D1 college athlete. I've talked to many. It's not as fun as it sounds outside of actually playing the game.
  24. Like the poster before you said, we need G5s to consistently win these games for the national agenda against G5s to change. If every time a G5 has a perfect or near perfect season they lose their bowl game, we lose credibility. As much as people here don't like it, Herman's Houston was good for us. We needed Western Michigan to beat Wisconsin last year but they didn't and that hurt. We need UCF to win this year. Rooting against UCF is rooting against UNT down the line.
  25. I'm sure the HC can pay for that final semester with the bonus money he got from his star player helping get the team to a bowl game. Surely 23 TFL and 10 Sacks had something to do with the 9-4 record.
