Most of our recruits had little to no P5 interest. Highly rated for G5, yes. Big 12 recruits, no. You can keep saying they're Big 12 caliber recruits but that won't make Big 12 programs offer them schollys. If SL plans on raiding our recruiting class to compete with OU, Texas, TCU, West Virginia, Okie State then good luck to him.

I've felt the same way. If I'm K State and SL really was my top target, I wanted him hired yesterday because the early signing period is in 2 weeks. If I'm SL and I'm leaving, the same applies. The longer they drag this out, the more difficult the transition becomes. Big 12 caliber recruits don't grow on trees and with players signing in 2 weeks, they're setting themselves up for failure on the recruiting trail the longer this takes. I'm sure interest was high on both ends but I'm getting the feeling they're looking elsewhere. There's no reason every other P5 out there has hired their new HC but K State hasn't unless things didn't work out. For a program that apparently has wanted SL for weeks this sure is taking a while.

I'll be disappointed if it's anything less than 50 words, 4 emojis, 3 different font colors, 3 different font sizes, and doesn't include a reference to UNT being great in the 60s.

This is pretty much what's going to happen. He isn't ready. In 3-4 years he'll be a has been with no more shots at a P5.

No offense (because we were told to be nice to y'all), but read previous posts for context. SL was all about "family" at UNT and is now leaving. He'll leave K-State for a bigger job if he's successful too. He's going to need more than "family" to make him successful at K-State. As for your pictures, Bill Snyder can sell family at K-State when he spent nearly 30 years there.

He'll have TCU back in the mix soon. I was going to list the coaches licking their chops at the thought of recruiting and coaching against SL, but I didn't want to list every coach in the Big 12. I think he'll be a great coach IF he waits a year or two to get more experience. He leaves now and he'll be an afterthought in a few years.

Because nobody in the Big 12 cares about wanting to be cute and build a family of local DFW guys wanting to play D1 ball close to home. They want wins. Building a family in the middle of nowhere is not going to trump going to play for Les Miles in the same middle of nowhere, or going to play for any of the other established Big 12 coaches. Fact is, SL was great at finding under appreciated and under sized high school players. Thats great for CUSA. Before this year, he still couldn't out recruit his peers. That's not going to get easier in the Big 12. And it's a recipe for disaster against that competition.

100% with you. His "build a family" thing won't work in the Big 12.

So if SL leaves, who in the Big 12 got the best hire? 1. Texas tech with Matt Wells who took Utah State to a top 25 ranking, two 10 win seasons in a much more competitive conference, 4 bowl games in 5 years, and his only losing season was with Mike Canales on staff (ha!); 2. Kansas with Les Miles. Natty. LSU. Will recruit some strong defenses to Kansas because who doesn't want to play for a guy with a ton of his guys in the NFL; 3. K State with Seth Littrell. Multiple 20 point lead losses, no bowl wins, no big wins, blown out in every big game, no NFL draft picks. The answer is clear it's not SL. I guess strike when the iron is hot but he's not ready for the Big 12. He'll get eaten and will fall hard. He needs the extra time and I think will regret the decision. Not many coaches get multiple chances at P5 jobs. Now is not the right time to go to K State with the fire power coming up in the Big 12. He's easily the greenest coach in the Big 12.

Fair about Arizona, UNC, Indiana. Regarding SL's "effectiveness," what he's shown is he has connections. He's hired the right staff time here even after losing coaches. Still hasn't won a big game. Imo, he's not ready for the P5. Repeated collapses don't scream p5 success. I think he's just lucky K State is desperate for a new coach because SL hasn't seriously been considered for any other coaching spots that we've heard of.

Hoping for his immediate failure so no program wants to take our HC again. Seriously though, I don't want him to fail but I don't like him leaving for a middle of the pack big 12 program who's only success has been with 1 coach. He looks like a kid going after the next shiny toy right now.

Don't care about length of time at UNT. Give me the best coach we can get every year.

Because he would have lost this P5 opening to SL so why not replace SL at his former school to get him to a P5 and get paid nearly twice as much in the meantime. He may see it as UNT being a better opportunity to get him to a P5. Also, as mentioned before regarding SL taking tough coaching jobs, these guys believe they can win no matter where they go. They don't see tough and easy. They just see themselves climbing the ladder no matter where they go.

Sounds perfect to me. Houston got Herman knowing the big P5s were looking at him. He left after, what, 2 years? That's part of becoming a top notch G5 program. You get the guys the P5s are looking at, keep the momentum going, and become a regular stepping stool for the P5. We can't hire scared, afraid of losing our next coach too soon. You hire the best there is knowing he will be hired away soon. Period.

I don't comment to please people, I comment the way I see things. I'm so grateful we got SL. He was the perfect hire for us and I don't think anybody out there would have given us more. He will forever be beloved amongst us UNT faithful. That said, his big games collapses are a concern (blowouts and loss of big leads). If I'm K State, I'm worried about replacing my legend with a guy who's yet to win a meaningful game.

Agreed. Looking at Neal Brown, he's got a similar coaching trajectory as SL (OC/QB at Texas tech and Kentucky for 2 years each). I would love to have Neal Brown. I guess that's where my confusion lies with SL being their primary target here. Neal Brown sounds like such a stronger candidate to me at this point. Regarding NDSU, keeping the momentum going never stopped Boise State coaches from getting plucked on a regular basis. I do understand your point though. If SL leaves, Neal Brown would be such an exciting hire considering his recent stint at Texas Tech and Kentucky with Mainord (if I'm not mistaken). I think a guy like Brown would be our best chance at keeping the majority of this recruiting staff intact as well. Especially if he could keep Mainord here. The fact that Brown is an OC/QB guy is also great for our young QBs and to keep Mason Fine going senior year. Hopefully he's in green in a few weeks if SL leaves.

So no offense to SL, but we've st*t the bed in every meaningful game he's coached in. If I'm looking for successful coaches, I'd say Neal Brown (Troy) and Chris Kleiman (NDSU) fit the bill. Troy beat a strong LSU last year and handled us in our bowl game. NDSU is the best of the best in FCS ball.

If I had to guess, I would say the NDSU coach is near the top of their list and above SL. NDSU's coach has coached at Kansas before so he has history in the state, was hired to NDSU by KState's current AD, has been incredibly successful at NDSU, and has had several draft picks at NDSU. He seems like the best fit for K-State to me.

The NM Bowl provides one of the best matchup opportunities for CUSA during bowl season. This shouldn't surprise any of us. I won't make the game. Can't due to budget, having a family of 5 kids including a 2 month old, and time frame. For those who can make it, please do. If you can make it, don't talk down to those who can't (not that I've seen this). We have had discussions of joining the Mountain West Conference conference to hopefully follow TCU's path. Now that we have a bowl game against the Mountain West at a relatively close destination (New Mexico), we as a fan base are complaining. This is a good opportunity. I just don't understand why we've had discussions hoping to join the MW conference and are now complaining about playing against this conference. Somebody please help with that? If it's just the financial aspect on such a short turnaround then I understand.

I agree with you but this is also where he needs to calm down and think about his end goal. If he intends on getting to OU, he would be better off staying put for a year to see what happens with Lincoln Riley. Even if it's not necessarily OU, he can get to a big P5 with a big season at UNT next year similar to Tom Herman's trajectory. Going to K State restarts his entire process unless he immediately has a 7+ win season.

K State is one of those weird schools where they cherish both football and basketball. If SL wants to go to a low level P5 he would be best going to a basketball school where there will be no pressure to win big. A basketball school where getting to 8 wins a for a couple years would be big like Kansas or Iowa State. If he does go to K State and replace their legendary coach, all eyes will be on him. Big risk in my opinion.
