Thanks for the update. Makes me wonder...if Chico is thinking he will be gone this season (which I don't think), will he take some recruits with him?

Mind you against some of the worst passing defenses in the country.

Count me in the "a win is a win" group, but we obvs need more wins. This season, better QB play could have won us some more games. I feel pretty football confident, so I ask you, is a 55.9% completion percentage, 6.9 yards per pass attempts, 2 passing tds, and 2 INTs over the last 3 games acceptable? Is that not complaint-worthy? (I should've photoshopped DTs face in).

Recruiting QBs for a conservative offense? Mac’s take
Aldo replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone else feel like Vito is getting more and more passive aggressive on this topic? Smart QBs know that style shouldn't be a factor in deciding where to go. Pro-style offenses in college produce more NFL-ready QBs (I am speaking in generalities here). Pro style QBs go earlier in the draft because of development. Pro-style doesn't mean statue QB, either. But I digress. I know we're no NFL factory, but this article makes it sound like UNT is the only pro-style offense in the country. Lots of Big 10 schools run the pro-style offense and have no problem recruiting qbs. Because they're Big 10. That's your answer. We have difficulty recruiting because we're not Michigan State, Stanford, Wisconsin, [insert other historied school with pro-style offense here]. -
I mean, who wouldn't want to play on a middling team in the Sunbelt... I wonder if chance for early playing time had anything to do with it?

So the takeaway here is anyone counting on UTSA as a win?

DRC Monday column: No denying it now -- UNT misses Thompson
Aldo replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
It really wasn't just Thompson. It was the people and talent around him that made him better. Thompson would not fare any better this season, as this season's trio have been charged with putting the team on their shoulders on a game-by-game basis. -
What Andrew McNulty needs to be successful is Darnell Smith, Brelan Chancellor, and Byrd (and possibly Anyiam). What the offense as a whole needs to be successful is a defense. That's what set DT up for success.

I appreciate these FSSW commentators

Okay. Canales is doing this offense no favors.

WRs aren't getting open or he's passing to Terrell. WRs are kind of just giving up on their first break of their route.

Jimmerson needs to quit dancing around so much. I liked that little bio on Cato during halftime.

Relationship between UNT coach, QB's family comes full circle
Aldo replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm still on the DW bus, but McNulty is the QB for now whether we like it or not. Finally got the chance to watch the DVR'd game. Still has some mechanics issues, but Got to give McNulty credit where credit is due. He is one tough kid, and he faces pressure well, taking some good hits and getting right back up. The biggest mistake he made was not keeping the ball on a zone read. That's not terrible. He was underthrowing the deep ball slightly (see: mechanics), but he was placing it very well for Harris. And hey, a deep pass! He was throwing him open. He's also not afraid to put it in a tight window (granted, nearly picked off). He didn't pass for TDs due to play calling, but I liked what I saw. Overall I think he did well against Southern Miss. He was calm and poised. Terrell could not catch several clean balls, and Smiley and Kidsy were also causing drives to stall with horrible drops. He's definitely not the reason we lost last week, which cannot be said for DW the past two weeks. Decision-making from McNulty is clearly more developed and calm than DW. We need that right now. -
Assuming we are speaking in all hypotheticals... What about LBs? I can see moving someone like Polk to OLB, but what about the other OLB? Do we have someone that's good/fast enough for coverage? Who's the other ILB? I haven't seen much love for Wallace around here (been out of town every weekend this month so haven't caught up with my DVR).

Official UAB Game Score Prediction Thread
Aldo replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
I was feeling down, but pastorgrant and GOMG2013 really pumped me up! Looking for a shootout with big games from the Williams (passing yards) and our TEs against those LBs. 38-27 UNT -
DRC Monday column: There's more to worry about than Dajon
Aldo replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
True Story. Our only receivers over 6-0 are run blockers. The case of the dropsies was bad this weekend, and they continue to show lack of physicality off the blocks. Get these Carthage boys out there, and make Dajon the Mean Green Hannibal. Boom. Historied.- 15 replies

Not sure if it's meant for me but, nope. We got overmatched on the exact weaknesses I pointed out. Shaky in the back, not fast enough to cover deep slants. I didn't think two sacks was a lofty goal. Not getting a single one sucks, but not getting enough pressure was even worse. Sudfeld got free too often on scampers for first down. The one surprise was the run defense. Holy moly. Bad tackling.

It's too soon to tell anything about GMG.com until Saturday. Or, Sunday if they're observing a 24 hour rule.

Enough with the, let's wait till Saturday. We have gotten enough looks from our defense. I can see that excuse with the offense since we've changed it. I think the "let's wait before we can truly say anything" can be used on the first game of a season, second tops. We've been up and down, and that's what we are. Great up front, shaky in the back, with trouble covering deep slants. The defensive output is correlated to the offensive output. If the offense sputters, the defense will wear down. We don't have to wait till Saturday to figure that out. I don't care who we play, we can make assertions or predictions based on film from the past few games of each team, not just our own team. I don't have to wait till Saturday to know we can move the ball vertically on Indiana. They're also vulnerable to horizontal passes, and can be beat with screens and runs or options to the outside. What does that mean? The Our defense doesn't get gassed in the second quarter. Based on their play, if we get 2-3 sacks this game, or stop them for a long 3rd down, we take away the running dimension for the most part. They don't really run the ball on long 2nd or 3rd down folks. That increases our chances to get the defense off the field. If you just want to look at "good" teams we played against and ignore all other stats, film, and play-calling, fine. That's really lazy and frustrating, but fine. Against UT we put enough pressure up front against what was considered a formidable O-line. We got 2 sacks. We allowed 5.6 yards per pass. That's really good. We allowed 4.1 yards per rush. That's solid. We allowed 4-15 3rd down conversions. 4-15! We couldn't defend the boots and the deep slant. We weren't fast enough down the field. We match up well on offense and on defense against Indiana. I don't have to wait till Saturday to know. That doesn't make me a fluffy whatever, or anti-naysayer. I can see the numbers and the film to know what we have the potential to do. How we actually execute is a different story altogether, and I can't predict that. Just ask the 2007 Patriots.

A link to Coleman's split stats in 2014 so far Looks like we need to keep Indiana at 2nd and long and 3rd and long to keep them from handing it to Coleman. Also, if we get any sort of lead, that will keep him from touching it as much (although this stat can be misleading, just depends on how often they've been down).
