  1. This is my favorite quote from the TCU Fan site: The hard question to answer would be "What makes you passionate about being UNT's head football coach as opposed to any other school?" If Meachum comes here I think it is a pretty good hire based on what people have predetermined the criteria should be. If you are going to hire someone without head coaching experience you can't do much better than that. For the record I think head coaching experience at the G5 or FCS level would be more valuable than "high powered offense coordinating experience". A head coach by job description has to worry about a lot more than recruiting and X's & O's. By him being from Arlington he should be very familiar with the historical ineptness of UNT Football. But his path is clear, if he can win a CUSA Championship and Bowl and game against a P5 team that isn't the doormat of their conference he would be in line for some of the best coaching jobs in the country. But who knows, he is 50 and might have a plan to coach at UNT for 15 years and retire just because he likes the DFW community. I think the bar is relatively low here. Keep your record around .500 every year and make a bowl game every 4 seasons you can coach here as long as you want.
  2. They are mythical and if they exist in some form there maybe more or less than 17 of them.
  3. Wow, and I am chastised for being negative? His career is over and the coaches responsible for letting his behavior continue are gone too. Yet we have 2 pages of comments about a player that should have been dismissed from the team after the second game Canales was interim head coach. Yet our "Jerry Jones" like figure came on the radio at halftime to give us a coaching search update and said basically nothing. On the best days during the best years of the program we can barely get 10% the local alumni and students to show up for game. Yes his behavior was bad but our program now is just as bad and he is representative of that like it or not. The whole program reeks of incompetence from top to bottom. The only thing positive about today was the professionalism of our radio broadcast. But that is product of our radio television and film academic department and not the athletic department.
  4. TCU has a pretty good history and great traditions but they are not the UT Longhorns or Aggies. I could understand the fans voicing concerns that he may be leaving early because he could wait for a better job. But not having to leave the metro area for a FBS head coaching position would be hard to turn down especially if the pay in competitive to want those other "better" positions would offer. I think I just heard the Tulsa job was open but that isn't really a better job.
  5. I never got the memo that as a MGC member I am supposed to run off fans while ignoring incompetence in the Athletic Department. Harry want positive realistic solutions to fix the program while accepting RV. Well that is like telling me to walk on water. It goes well beyond RV and the leadership of the school has demonstrated they aren't willing to change the culture to bring success here. And sadly it appears to me that a lot GM Forum members are a part of that defeatist culture.
  6. First time FBS level head coaches don't have that kind of "weight". And UNT are those places. Georgia Southern has FCS national championships. How many does UNT have? Oh that is right you have to win a FCS playoff game to win the FCS National Championship. Oh, sorry there I go citing fac..... I mean being negative. Harry delete my account please.
  7. I think it is kind of rude to ask but I will tell you my level is Victory Circle. I will be there today in the rain, will you be?
  8. Since we are now make nonsensical comments because we don't like what someone has to say. So where do you and RV hangout? What kind of drink do you two partake in when you guys complain about the minority fans not falling in line with rest of the sheep? Oh, and by the way this "fan" that doesn't live up to your expectations of sheep-dome is about to get dress to go watch this team in this horrible weather. Will you be there? Maybe in club seats protected from the elements I suspect.
  9. Nope, because it is not about the coach it is about the program. No first time Division I head coach is going to strike fear into the rest of the conference because of the state of the program now except someone with a family name like Briles. The Athletic Department Leadership at Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, and Rice are sleeping well tonight because they unlike many in this forum can look objectively at this program and conclude it will be a 3 year process under the best case scenario. Stealing Skip Holtz from Louisiana Tech would only thing that would strike fear in the rest of CUSA. "Oh Crap they finally realized that they are biggest school in CUSA west division in the most populous metro area and they just don't want to be competitive they want to dominate it" - Various CUSA Athletic Directors
  10. Run off loyal supporters who happen to accurately criticize the program and the leadership, good one. Just more fuel to the fire why its "hard" here. It hard here because the leadership, community, and alumni make it hard. And the problem is, it DOESN'T have to be. So until we get one those 3 primary issues improved this will continue to be a dumpster fire. I have been to almost every game since 2005, graduated in 2008 and at least half of Dickey's home games. "Rehire Mac" really? If that is what you get out my post maybe I should stop writing. The point is that until you get rid of RV and change the leadership culture don't expect any sustained success here. I don't have time nor do I care about what other programs "on UNT's level" are doing. But I will ask this name one coach in the country that was successful a program without at one those 3 primary issues I mentioned being a strength of the program when they arrived. I don't think that coach exist and if this amazing coach accomplished this feat, I doubt it was his first head coaching job at FCS level or above.
  11. I would pay for club seat ticket for the UTEP game.
  12. i am looking for just one club seat ticket for tomorrow
  13. What UNT90 is omitting is the fact that we don't have a clear vision for the athletics program that lives up to what UNT is as 25 largest university in the country in a very large media market, with 237,000 local, and 29,000 undergraduate students. Someone asked how money would it take to hire one those candidates UNT90 or I would want. My answer is: if we can get $1,000 from just 15,000 (or just $500 from the same number of alumni) of the local alumni, I think we could afford just about anyone dare not hope to get right now. If you didn't do the math we are talking about 7.5 million to 15 million. With that kind of money you can hire coach at 2.5-5.0 million and hire some top notch assistants to come with him. Like it or not when RV said we are minority he was right but he was talking about UNT fans in general. UNT fans are in the minority of population of people who have a connection with he school. We can't even get 15% of those huge population numbers to sellout Apogee just once. Those numbers don't mean nothing without leadership to unite them and set the vision. The most valuable American sports franchise in the world has .500 record and 2 post season victories in 20 years and if you don't know what franchise I am referring to do a little research because it is very close to home. Oh, by the way, how many post season wins does the Mean Green have in that same time period?... 2. But I would bet my life that of these 237,000 local alumni 90% have more of this pro teams merchandise than UNT's.
  14. Neither really, but I prefer Seth out of the two.
  15. Leadership culture matters especially when you don't have tradition of winning, strong deep alumni support, strong community support or vibrant vocal invested student support. With that said if you are going to be involved with the program you should support him as much as you can. I for one don't believe in the leadership of the program so I am not wasting my money anymore. The leadership doesn't care and severely underestimates how UNT alumni would step up if they were make a "big dawg" hire. Houston is going up to 3 million to keep their coach. I think 3 million here could land you coaches on the short list for P5 positions but 1.5 million at a toxic head coach killing climate at North Texas is not going to do it. Go get a Skip Holtz
  16. He doesn't have a record of winning as a head coach so I am out. Mark my words now this is his last FBS or higher head coaching position for at least 10 years and that won't be by choice. Get ready for some more disappointment.
  17. Facilities and money aren't a cure all. Moreover if Ruston, Jonesboro and etc are worse jobs how come we can't get one of the head coaches who have had success at those places to leave to come here? Answer: it because UNT is not much better than those job when factor in RV, alumni apathy and student apathy. Even during the Heart of Dallas Bowl season I couldn't give my seats away except for the Rice game. I wear UNT gear almost everywhere I go and only once has anyone asked me how the team was doing. Is that because they already know? I doubt based on the coverage we get in the local media, even during few good season we have had. Most likely it because they don't care even if they know some basic facts about UNT. Want to conduct your own experiment? Ask a student of alumni you know that isn't on this board have they been to a UNT game this year or even last year. I love my school and my closet is full of UNT gear instead of Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Maverick, Dallas Stars, Longhorns, or Texas Rangers gear. I am sick of leadership making half ass attempts at turning the program around. And until I see them hire a bonafide coach with a winning record as a head coach at the FCS or FBS level I think it is crazy to expect things to improve especially with King RV at the helm. I walked away from following the Dallas Cowboys after Bill Parcells was run out of town because it was the latest indicator that Jerry Jones ego trumps putting together a winning front office culture. That is exactly what is going on at UNT the only difference that UNT can get rid of RV. I like to dream big but our Athletic Department doesn't. The 25th largest university in the USA needs to spend like one of the big boys and they need to partner with the alumni to do that. And I mean really reach out. Bold statement like "We ARE a big boy school" and we can beat upper P5 school but we need X amount of money from our local alumni to get the kind of coach that recruit some the players these P5 schools really want. Houston is going up to 3 million dollars to try to keep their coach and we are crowing about maybe 1.5 million to come fix a toxic dumpster fire with the guy largely responsible for it still in charge? So the next time we are lucky enough to schedule Houston and they mop the field with us, I want you come back to this forum and read my "negative" comments again.
  18. I am no supporter of Mac (didn't like the hire in the first placed base on his record at ISU). And my schtick is call truth; your average student that comes to UNT does not come because they expect anything exciting coming from the athletics programs. And I think that is very apparent when you can barely get 8,000 out of 24,000 undergraduate to show up during a historic season. Mac wasn't done wrong but that doesn't mean he was wrong when he said this was a hard place to recruit to. That is why Kendall Briles is not interested nor should he be. If you were a Texas recruit today how would you rank FBS destinations strictly based on opportunity to be a part of a winning team? And let us just list in state jobs? 1. Baylor 2. TCU 3. Texas A&M 4. UT Austin 5. Texas Tech 6. Houston So we are in the bottom 6 anyone minimally objective can see that. I am not making excuses for past or future coaches. UNT needs someone truly amazing to get this turned around. I don't see that happening with RV at the helm. And I don't see how any "amazing" coach would respect a program with RV as their "boss" even if that is only his figurative position at this point. So until UNT hires a coach that has shown he can recruit to historically bad programs, I will not get my hopes up.
  19. 4. One has to wonder if this doesn’t give coaches pause UNT has really struggled, which could case potential replacements for Dan McCarney to consider how hard it will be to turn the program around. -Brett Vito UNT is a garbage job for someone trying to move up without many options.
  20. Josh Greer got into the game. Wow, kind of glad I missed it now.
  21. Clay Jennings deserves serious consideration and Freddie Kitchens
  22. Still NFL scout aren't going to really dive into a tape of a player playing against the Naval Academy to evaluate their talent level. Navy has no regional presence here. The only really positive out of conference scheduling contract we have is SMU.
  23. Pep Hamilton anyone?
  24. So I see a familiar refrain in this forum. We don't have the players and the coaching regimes that failed to recruit. I saw someone comment about our "brand" image. Be honest and ask yourself this, if you were a recruit with more than 1 FBS offer would you come here? I can barely like schools in the region that a recruit would choose UNT over. Let take a quick look at the regional programs that are about on UNT's level and their OOC home game till 2025 Texas State - [Home and Home with SMU, Baylor & Houston} UTEP - [Home and Home with Tech Tech & Boise State] Rice - [Stanford, Baylor & Texas A&M all in Houston plus Northwestern in 2026] UTSA - [I would list but it would just make you furious] UNT - [Army and SMU the rest don't merit even mentioning] I don't think most recruits get excited about playing a service academy. That is why UNT need a head coach that is a brand in his own right. Recruits aren't coming here for the UNT brand or the conference we in or the out of conference that we currently have slated. I a big time coach would welcome a big time challenge. But what the hell do I know I always get "yelled" at for suggesting that UNT needs a Spurrier, Mack Brown, or Chip Kelly type. With even the best up and coming coach this team is 3 years away from a decent bowl game. Because most likely they won't be able to recruit that well. They will get some players but will have to work very hard just to steal a few from Texas State, UTSA, UTEP and SMU.
  25. This is just one of many reasons that RV has to go. I don't mind playing Tennessee but you can have Portland State come in here when you don't get home and homes series with regional lower level P5 FBS programs like Kansas, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Colorado and Kansas State. So let get real and let us get the excuses why we can't schedule each team case by case. 1. Texas Tech? 2. Houston? 3. Kansas State? 4. Colorado 5. Colorado State 6. Tulsa? 7. Kansas? 8. Memphis? 9. Louisville? 10. Vanderbilt? 11. Kentucky? Those are a lot of options. All teams that would generate interest here except maybe Tulsa. Maybe 1 home game to 2 away game or 1 home game to 3 away game deals could get this done. Because at the end of the day if RV get this next hire wrong don't be surprised if this is a FCS program come 2025. I know I am walking away at the end of this season and as long as RV is here I don't see anything changing significant enough for me to come back. Very few people care about this program because they have given us very few reasons to care over the last 12 years.
