Littrell to be named UNT HC per Brett McMurphy
Mike Jackson replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Shut up GRN-WHT here on GMG.com pointing out the fact that we couldn't beat a team that didn't have a program the year I began my UNT education in 2000 is dumping on the program. They don't want to acknowledge today its hard to win here. -

Dumping is citing the facts and asking questions? Literal is the best hire if you are not hiring someone with a winning record as a college football head coach. So whoever made the decision to hire him made a good decision based on the preset criteria they had. But isn't quite problematic that we have to say "whoever made the decision to hire him". At most winning programs you know who the decision maker is. We don't here and everyone knows why so I won't restate it now. Whoever they are they have run me out of the MGC and turned my fandom into measured optimism. But I for one won't be trying to run Literal off after 2 below .500 seasons especially if he wins 3 or more games each year. In contrast I think the overly optimistic people in this forum will be and that isn't realistic. Any coach here should get a 2 year mulligan or more as long as RV is nominally in charge the Athletic Department. Yes, the Heart of Dallas Bowl was a great season but it is only great because of all the garbage that preceded it. If you cook a decent meal for a starving person you are the greatest cook in the world until he gets another decent meal. -

What Eagle-96 said is true. So I believe realistic measured optimism is the best response to this new hire Mean Green Fans can expect from our fanbase in general. As much as you don't like it my fellow Mean Green Fans it is hard to win here. For all you spiked punch drinking Mean Green Fans answer me this question who want to talk about our "potential" all the time. Name the last head coach at UNT not named Hayden Frye to coach multiple seasons here and leave with winning percentage above .500? Portland State was a better team period, that is how bad McCarney's recruiting and player development was. SMU destroyed UNT in the second half and it wasn't just the offense that let us down. Of the games we lost, only one I watched in real time thinking we had an opportunity to win was UTEP. Maybe with a month of practice before each of those games you mentioned with a great coaching staff we win all the games you mentioned. For the record if UNT was going to hire a coach without head coaching experience, I think you can't do much better than Litteral. I really hope he is prepared for dealing with the toxic climate here. I hope him and his agent has been on GMG.com and have taken it all in. I hope he has the kind of professional and personal support to help him deal with new challenges he will face as a first time college football head coach. This is very challenging program to win at, if it wasn't in 100 years of football it would easy to answer the question I posed. -

Sorry that is drinking the spiked punch if not Kool Aide. Did you watch the DL and OL play at all this year? Also RB Wilson wasn't available for couple of game also and they would not have won any games without him. Lastly the secondary ended up with a lot of underclassmen in the ranks due to injury and bad play. Of the 22 position players that are on the field for regular offensive or defensive snaps we may have had 4 that played consistently good. You could have brought Nick Saban in here with the same roster and 4 would have been max. -
DRC Monday column: UNT can't afford to miss on coach
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
How many times over the last 20 years has someone wrote basically the same article about this program. First is was moving up to FBS. Then it was moving conferences. Next it was scheduling more regional teams. Then it was moving to a better conference. Then it was winning a Bowl Game. Then it was the coaches, or the type of offense we run. Through all this is has the athletic department been cleaned from top to bottom during that time? Because the culture that is okay with mediocrity seems be a constant regardless of who the leader is. -

Mike Jackson replied to CMJ's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I don't know if it is true because I have not seen evidence of it with my own eyes except the comments coming from KRAM1 in this thread. But it certainly feels that way which is just a big a part of me leaving the MGC as incompetence. The assertion that this "high school click" culture is play a role in the incompetence is logical. It is very sad to walk away but I don't see any other option here. I was talking to a student just the other day and the apathy attitude and under valuing UNT mindset is alive, well and thriving among the UNT population. It's depressing. -
While we are waiting for the new coach to be named
Mike Jackson replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in Mean Green Football
Richt getting frustrated by the lack of resources is one way to look at it. Another is that he would welcome the challenge from more reasonable fans and not be in the pressure cooker SEC. If a coach comes here and wins 3 or more New Year's Day Bowl games he is an all time legend here. He could turn UNT into the southern version of Boise State. And with UNT's location it would be more sustainable than Boise State. I just dream of a coach want to come here to be our Frank Beamer. -
The longer this drags out the more I am concerned about getting not getting either one of these guys. If we don't have a coach by Tuesday of next week, I will be in full blown panic.

It is a Basketball School in Basketball country, so a good football team is seen as s luxury. If our football program dominated CUSA for 15 years and we happen to have nice little basketball run in the midst of that no one would sweat a basketball assistant leaving. Texas is football country and TCU doesn't have a couple of recent national championships in the sport most important to them.

Mike Jackson replied to CMJ's topic in Mean Green Basketball
The more I dig into athletic department/MGC/Upper MGC culture the more I am disturbed by what I read. I don't think UNT has the brand or the resources to continue having a dysfunctional fragmented organization and expect success. I am extremely passionate about UNT and I am in the extreme minority of UNT Alumni. UNT Alumni is a diverse population. And we need more unifying energy so If what UNT90 is even 50% accurate it is a huge problem. The athletic department should be a uniting force regardless of the ups and downs of the individual teams. It is the Mean Green CLUB and we should be in it to promote the university and help student athletes. Perks are nice and the more you contribute the more you should get. But it should be transparent. If people want create a private upper echelon group fine but don't secret away space on game days at the Super Pit or Apogee. I wonder how many former MGC members were turned off by this fragmented culture and left the club partially because of it? It reminds me of the some the most negative aspects of the church I grew up in. And some them also wondered naively why their membership was on a steady decline. All I could do was shake my head and eventually leave. -

MGB breaking news -- Harris officially gone
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
This is really sad. Is this guy going to stay enrolled in school? He is a redshirt Junior so he should be pretty close to a degree. This is not an opportunity to take a pop shot at RV. -
If this is the case all I can say is OMG. As much as I want RV gone, I would hope they would do it in orderly fashion without this confusion.

Celebrate the New Coach but Some Accountabilty?
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
If it is so old then why doesn't anyone have an answer for question 2? A logical answer to that question would give me more hope than any "getable" coach. So let bury our heads in the sand and hope against the odds this next coach is successful. That is not inspiring and that isn't going to get butts in seats at Apogee.- 12 replies

Notice that I didn't even mention the P5 conference schools near by. Look I grew up in DFW and UNT athletic brand wasn't something you wanted be associated with. We don't show up for games and that speaks volumes about our athletic brand. It screams ineptness and apathy. All I know is that whoever the coach is he will have to work twice as hard to win recruits from SMU, Houston, and Texas State.
-
I am excited about the new coach but I won't have season tickets to come see what he produces. I welcome him to UNT. I will warn him about the ineptness of our athletic department. And tell him that he will have generate financial support and media attention for the program because the AD simply doesn't care or doesn't know how. (Just once I would like an AD to be honest with us and tell the masses what it will take financially get where we want to be). In so many negative ways what is going on at UNT mirrors exactly the same problem the pro team 35 miles south has. But I relent and simply ask the fans that have a problems with people who think like UNT90, KingDL1, and myself a few questions. I want to you consider these carefully if the next football coach fails 1. What did we accomplish by hanging on to RV in 2015 2. If RV is not one the main contributing factors to the mess that is our athletic department then what are these factors and how do we fix them? 3. Has RV generated strong and diverse financial support for the program? 4. Since the completion of the facilities improvements what exactly has RV done well? 5. Does Athletic Department have a mission statement and are they living up to it?

Come on Ben do we really have brand that can be pushed right now? You are talking about 17-19 year olds and even during the Heart of Dallas Bowl run local media coverage paled in comparison to coverage TCU or SMU gets. So I doubt many of them really remember that plus this coach wasn't here at the time to sell that as his accomplishment here. The coach will have to sell his brand of football more than he will be able to use the UNT brand to recruit. We had an argument in the chat room the other day as to whether we are officially Eagles or The Mean Green.... insert laughter here. With this late start I sincerely doubt whoever comes in and gets more than 5, three star recruits to sign come February. And God knows we need far more than that to have a 7 or 8 win season next year. But if the coach is really good he will be able to make the most of what we got and get us there. Mac was a bad recruiter no doubt but let's see what the next guy does before truly evaluate how bad he was. It is not like the any of the previous UNT coaches lit it up on national signing day.
-
Recruiting is going to suspect here until we start winning. And Mac relied on the walk-on program because the guys we "landed" did not pan out. We aren't getting a lot of 3 and 4 star recruits here so a coach better coach his ass off and develop talent regardless of how the get to the program. Most of the highly touted recruits we have landed haven't panned out and you only have to look at the QB's since the H. of Dallas for examples.

Why Meacham Over Littrell
Mike Jackson replied to HarringtonFishSmeller's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree with higher ceiling part and being "hungry". However, I don't recall seeing FCS or G5 experience. If hired he is going to he is going to have many "WTH" moments while on the job here and they won't be on Saturdays or on the practice field. Also if defies the odds and has early success here despite the "WTH" moments he leaves the first opportunity he gets. I think it will be some the issue here will be very frustrating to him. So I prefer the stability that Meachum might give us. -
I hate it when guys leave too however maybe for different reasons. Transferring is not good for their education and most of these student-athletes don't have a legitimate shot to make to the NFL or even CFL. I hope the next coach continues one the few things Mac did well (at least early on); the good walk-on program, stressing academics and positive off the field behavior. I know playing time is important but unless you 100% certain you are going to same quality education at school you transfer too you should go. Because even if they beat the odds a pro football career is less than 5 years in most cases. You better have an education for the rest of your life. But if you are on an ego trip and think the new coaching staff owes you something, get lost and good luck.
-
Unfortunately I have to agree. RV doesn't grasp how important it is to do everything in your power to manipulate the local media that has so many sports stories to cover. Well I am guessing he doesn't grasp it, he may not care. Either way just another example of... I will let you complete the thought.

How should the new coach handle the QB position?
Mike Jackson replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Please do not write things like this. I know Greer can't play QB. I actually left the UTEP early because as soon as he got in the game I called pick 6. After 2 running plays he did just that. I don't like any sentence in regards to our students or student athletes that start with "Don't honor". Anyway here is the breakdown Conner Means 6' 4" find out if he can play another position TE/WR DeMarcus Smith give him Spring ball to compete for the QB position Greer - absolute cannot see the field as anything but a kick holder or backup punter No more JUCO quarterbacks in 2016 Identify some recruits that won't get other FBS offers to come to the program as walk-ons and let them compete.. -
So that is good to know. I would hope that our vacancy was seen as a better opportunity than Tulsa's.

I see a lot of criticism for Carlos but let us not forget the coaches that continued to allow him to suit up for games. I have stated it at the time and will state again here; Carlos and the team would have been better off letting him focus on finishing his academic career. It is a dead issue because now he and the coaches are gone. People chastised me for being negative about the Athletic Department in general because it might run people off "banner and stuff". But you want to run recruits off keep trashing(albeit accurately) former players who were some of the most productive for a program that has had very little success the past 10 years. It is totally unproductive in my opinion cause there is nothing to change now. Now if Canales was still here (as much I liked him), I would be beating the drum for him to be fired for letting Carlos's act continue (among other discipline issues). Overall this is one the incidents that people outside the program looks at us and say "What the hell is wrong with these people" Also I bet more these "hard core" fans talking negatively about Carlos weren't at this game. And UNT Alumni not showing up for games is far and away a bigger cancer for this program than just one player who made some bone headed mistakes.
