Two future opponents play tonight (Rice and UTSA)
Mike Jackson replied to GMG24's topic in Mean Green Football
Well it won't be until 2023 at least and that is only if Memphis gets promoted to a P5 conference. None are scheduled to come to Apogee. -

Mike Jackson replied to GMG24's topic in Mean Green Football
No what you really hate is the anyone in a decision making capacity when comes to the athletic program the past 16 years at UNT. UTSA program is a newborn baby and they are hosting a prominent P5 school on primetime TV. And they are beating them in 3rd quarter. 'So highly desired perspective G5 recruit where do you want to play?' Hopefully most of the good ones are playing a game right now. But Euless Trinity has a bye week so I am sure plenty of others do too. But look on the bright side at least their uniforms suck -
MGB: UNT and the body bag/opportunity game -- A look back
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I had a clearly stated plan and if the details are in place I am in 100% agreement that going independent is bad idea. But if you do the scheduling prep work and have your scheduled covered for a 5 year period before you announce the move officially I believe it would work. The comments critiqued my suggestion without looking at the details of the plan. If you make the phone calls, work your professional/person network and feel you don't have possibility of building a schedule that sufficiently balance financial responsibility and competitive rewards you don't do it clearly. But let's get real this is a Seth better succeed or else this program could be financially unsupportable. And FCS may be in this program's future if it doesn't start winning big in CUSA. The Mean Green ran rough shot over the Sun Belt for 4 years. And Fouts never got more than maybe 28, 000 during that time. And even that figure is fudged because I was there for most of those games and you could play catch in the end zone stand not disturb anyone. I am familiar with all the excuses: No rivalries, Sun Belt opponents too far away, OOC opponents with little football history or regional relevance. Other than SMU what team is a causal fan or student board on a Saturday night is going to show up to see? The home schedule is garbage till 2021 unless our conference changes. Until Apogee starts averaging 25,000 per game UNT will be ignored by better conferences so independent or not the outlook is the same. Win huge or else this program is in more trouble than we would like to acknowledge. What is $425,000 CUSA per team payout vs unlimited opportunities? -
The only question I have is: How did the guy the guy that made this video have any mushrooms left over to share with our Mean Green Friend after he consumed enough to "inspire" this badger video?

MGB: UNT and the body bag/opportunity game -- A look back
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Two great quotes here. This issue is very connected to our conference affiliation. If we started winning consistently in CUSA it might be financially better for the football program independent a couple of years. Only an undefeated team at our level has a shot at a New Year's 6 bowl game. The CUSA champion title does little, what is more important in a win over a rank P5 team just like Houston has done the past 2 years. The scheduling would be hard but on the flip side it could be very rewarding financially and image transformative. If BYU stays independent we have 3 1/2 scheduling options. I say 1/2 because the best we could hope for with Norte Dame is a game at their place every 2 to 3 years. However that is 100 times better financially than a game against a FCS opponent students won't walk across a bridge to see for free. I know independence even for short time frame is pie in the sky. But we are in a desperate state right now. If the football relevance of our football conference partners don't improve drastically I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel without getting transformative coach. There are very few of those guys out there and we don't know if Seth is one of them yet. The AD has a very tough job on his hands and if I were him and just wanted to be great AD and hope to move on to being an AD at powerhouse I would swing for the fences. And going independent is something I would flesh out the feasibility of the details and consider. Winning will rewrite the equation but we have to win HUGE here to dig out of where we are now. You need 3 consecutive seasons with 4 losses or less. Also you need to throw in 2 victories of P5 opponents and a decent bowl game win over a program with substantial bowl history (15+). That is a very tall order and I am not sure CUSA scheduling requirements will help you get there. What do you guys think? With an independent schedule how would rank the attractiveness of against G5 (& Army) opponents listed below. (Let me explain the logic of the list. The SEC and ACC has the football interest east of Texas locked down there are few good G5 programs out there that don't have marketability in DFW. Therefore I left programs like Western Kentucky, UAB, and all of CUSA East out of the list. The list not coincidently has most of MWC conference in it besides Hawaii, and San Jose State. The Mountain West market is more sparsely populated but the market is less crowded. Boise State and BYU have national recognition in part because they dominated this region of the country especially before the PAC 12 reached east to grab Utah and Colorado. A good litmus test is a non football fan knowing generally where a school is located by its name. The less a program has of that and football history the more people are inclined to skip the game) SMU Tulane Army La Tech Colorado State San Diego State Air Force UTSA UTEP RIce Houston* may not be G5 for long Air Force Tulsa Memphis Southern Miss Arkansas State Boise State Texas State New Mexico New Mexico State Utah State Fresno State UNLV Nevada Thank you for taking the time to read my mental exercise. And if you read all this you might be interested in my conclusion. Going independent is even more attractive to me than when I started writing this. It could allow us to build and maintain in Texas rivalries, get into the MWC viewing market, open up financially prestigiously rewarding scheduling opportunities with P5 opponents. With that flexibility and some luck a great AD could work miracles. How does 4 year home and home series with BYU sound, 1 home 2 away series with OSU, home and home with Arizona or Arizona State, Colorado, or hell even a home and home (or 1 for 2) with Nebraska? 1. Get a marginal floundering P5 program with history & name recognition into Apogee. 2. Beat them 3. Watch the program transform. (But you have to win leading up to that game and follow it with a overall wining season.) -
I don't think Mac would have offered Fine

Size at few positions are premium even at the FBS level. You have to have girth to play in the front 7 on defense. If you don't weight at least 200 pounds in the front 7 your aren't going to be effective or if you are it will be for a short time till you get injured. And I would very reluctant to offer any 17-18 year old skill positing prospect who weighed 165 lbs and over 5' 8". It is a sturdy frame that. A compact 5'7" 165 lbs skill position guy with speed can make plays at the FBS level. Having too many of these high school productive small guys can be a negative issue. But there are few spots on almost every team for this small quick guys and good coaches find them. Just look at 5' 9" Brelan Chancellor he was great. But now imagine him paired with 6' 3" WR just with adequate speed and good route running skills. Brelan get even more opportunities to make big plays in the slot position. -
MGB: UNT and the body bag/opportunity game -- A look back

I think the economic argument is a valid one paying 40% of your whore game pay to bring in a FCS opponent is stupid. Recruits that want to go to P5 school but got passed over want to at least play against P5 teams whenever possible. How much income are you generating by playing Incarnate Word? I know I am not coming unless I have season tickets. And that is not encouraging me to buy season tickets either. Scheduling regional FBS teams with name recognition gets people interested. Winning some of those games keeps people instead. You don't have to go 9-3 or better every year to keep fans coming back. But if you insist on playing the "Sisters of the Poor" every year then you must go 8-4 or better every year to keep fans coming back. I am an alumni in the desired 30-45 year old demographic and disposal income is tight for most of us. Watching the Mean Green beat lower level FCS is not enjoyable enough for me to fork over $125 for a season ticket. -

MGB: UNT and the body bag/opportunity game -- A look back
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Is this true? Just looked it up omg it is. The new AD has to do everything in his power to get 2 of these 3 opponents removed from our schedule: (Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, or Abilene Christian). That isn't a 6th or 7th home game that is a glorified scrimmage that does nothing for your program and doesn't make it look like a serious FBS program. ^^^ So true no research necessary. There are lot of directions you can go with scheduling before settling for the teams I mentioned earlier. Tulane, Texas State, New Mexico State, Tulsa, Utah State, Nevada, UMass, Georgia State, and Georgia Southern are options for home and home that you could win. -
Wish I could be there. I am on call for work

'If the competition in practice is close between a true freshman and a senior with 3 years practice reps against one the best defenses in college football. You play the freshman especially if no one realistically expects your team to be bowl eligible or compete for a conference title in the upcoming season. Morris was a good acquisition on paper but if that doesn't translate to the field on game day, well you can't win games on paper. That even holds true when P5 team lacing them up to play a FCS team.

With these lower level G5 team playing so well North Texas needs to show big time improvement this week. SMU is playing well at the start of their game against Baylor without QB Matt Davis but I am taking little comfort in that.l

Another Graduate Transfer QB option
Mike Jackson replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
So I don't get the point of the latest entry in this thread. This guy isn't available and he went to a P5 school. End of story. We aren't at the level where we can steer graduate transfers from other P5 opportunities yet. He is at North Carolina State and he is starting for them? -
No he wasn't in the game that entire drive from what I recall. And the play by play for that drive does not mention him once. Anthony got the ball on 2nd and 3rd down before the 4th and 1.

Looking for Club Seats for the Bethune-Cookman game!
Mike Jackson replied to wimbertron's topic in Mean Green Ticket Exchange
I would like to buy one or 2 also -
Losing is losing whether you do it by ineffectively "Letting it Fly" or by 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Being able to speak well for a stadium push already in progress still to me does not mean much. I graduated in 2008 and as a student at that time Dodge had zero impact positive or negative on my vote. And no the program didn't end for me after Dickey but majority of what I saw after was bunch of bad decisions. We got some facilities and that is great but really it was the minimum the university had to do have any hope of being relevant at the FBS level. My tag line says it all.....

WANT TO SEE A REAL FOOTBALL BAND?
Mike Jackson replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes they need to be revamped. Maybe if we paid to have Bethune Cookman, Grambling, or Praire View bands to come along with their teams hear maybe they would be embarrassed enough to put more energy into the production. I can see the band being reduce by 1/3 to have smaller more energetic band happier to perform and get the crowd hyped. That is one of the problems with our FCS scheduling they usually don't bring a good band with them. -
WANT TO SEE A REAL FOOTBALL BAND?
Mike Jackson replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Really? Of all things to take a passive aggressive shot at our school you choose this SMH. Send an e-mail to the director of the band and make a suggestion for next year. This is extremely counter productive. -
Competitive does not mean winning. It means near .500 or slightly under. Look everyone we play is trying to win therefore you should expect to go home unhappy with the result about 50% of the time. However when you are unhappy competition throughout the game to arrive at the L you don't want that is UNACCEPTABLE. This isn't an expansion franchise in the NFL, a FBS program in the middle of major NCAA sanctions or just coming off of them, a small private college in the middle of no where, or a program brand new to the FBS level (within 5-10 years). I am a fan and will always be a fan/alumni. However if you want me to anything beyond just buying/wearing the gear, donating to the alumni association, make a minimum donation to the Mean Green, and attend 3-4 games a year you have to be COMPETITIVE. There are too many other things in life and in NCAA sports for me to enjoy than to watch beatings of my Alma Mater on the field. Any storied blue blood FBS program would have their attendance drop by 50% if they had 10 year run with 0.500 season or better season without NCAA sanctions causing it. Don't embarrass me in front of my guest to the game that I am paying for, that is all I ask.

So again why was Wilson on the bench on both of those plays?
