It depends on the program regardless of level and what they consider a “down” year. Consistently unranked P5 programs always have down years. However you don’t hire big name like “Jim Mora” and accept more than 2 down years.

I agree they look bad from a distance. I had good seats and they looked atrocious. I wonder how they looked on TV? Flag inspired accents to the uniforms or helmets of other teams look better. Not everything that would look good in a collection case should be worn even annually. Perfect example some of those autographed helmets offered auction at Apogee looked awesome but I don’t think the Cowboys, 49ers or etc will be wearing some of those alternate helmets anytime soon. I would prefer a regular flag patch somewhere else on the helmets or uniform.

I saw that and with the coverage we receive that is an improvement. I halfway expected Army to get a helmet sticker for over 500 yards rushing in a loss.

Independence Bowl reps walking around...
Mike Jackson replied to Got5onIt's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree but that is only I think we end up in the Armed Forces Bowl. Neither program interested in another rematch. It might be interesting fans who don’t follow either program “marketed” a contentious rivalry. Might generate decent TV numbers but attendance would be bad. -

Yes, I think Army would trade bowl games with Navy for us to end up in the Armed Forces Bowl. -
That is not an alumni hangout is for. Now discounted club seats for registered alumni beyond the 20 yard line would be cool. Not a huge discount something like $50 Off for the whole package or 10% off. I expect the elements inside the stadium but they need more space in the Pavilion another TV and more protection for the elements.

The flag looks awesome with the wind today. However the wind doesn’t feel good on the Alumni Pavilion patio. That reminds me that Pavilion is need of expansion. I would love to make a donation dedicated to expand it. Has anyone heard of something like that getting going?

Texas A&M prepared to pursue Jimbo Fisher
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Great college atmosphere at A&M no doubt but they need more patience when it comes to building their program into a national powerhouse. These huge buyouts are not good for FBS as a whole. Hard to justify not paying P5 students athletes when you are paying millions to coaches no longer coaching them. The individual colleges and conferences are too cut throat and it detrimental to the game as a whole. It could be fixed with some simple mandates. But NCAA is toothless when it comes to decisions that would impact the bottom line. That is why we have conferences that don’t make sense for the athletes trying to get a quality education. -
If you want Denton roots: Sly and the Family’s Thank You (for letting be myself). Especially fitting for a blowout going into the 4th Quarter. (FYI he is 74 so if you want get a remixed Mean Green version of it people need to act soon)

Texas A&M prepared to pursue Jimbo Fisher
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
FSU is a better program than A&M and it isn’t even close. But since you want to go there 3 national titles since 1993. Probably a couple more without Miami beating them (A&M hasn’t been regularly discussed in the national Championship chase for 2 decades). FSU is 12th in all time wining percentage and A&M is 26th. Texas A&M. A&M last national title came in the 1930s. A&M is has been UT’s pesky little brother for most of the last 30 years with no title game appearances and rarely finish the season ranked in the top 10. They had 2 good years in the sun with Johnny Manziel otherwise their best moments were as spoilers for KSU and Texas when they were in the Big 12. Yet you want to make a comparison? Your comment demonstrates the distorted view A&M has of itself that I would want to avoid in my next stop as a head football coach if I were Seth or Jimbo. I would rather worry about a resurgent Miami in my division than Alabama, Auburn, and LSU (if they get their act together). In the ACC I don’t play any of the teams every year you mentioned excepted Clemson. FSU should dominate the rest of the teams in the Atlantic division. -
With those facts posted it we should have to beg for coverage. UTSA got more coverage for beating that scandal ridden dumpster fire Baylor. I have seen it for years. Knocked off Texas Tech 1997 little coverage. We should not have to beg for coverage from local media full of North Texas graduates.

Texas A&M prepared to pursue Jimbo Fisher
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This would be a bad move for Jimbo. Texas A&M has yet to show it can compete in the SEC without a transformative player like Johnny Manziel. For national prominence recent accomplishments are all that matter to recruits. If most of the hardware you can show recruits is not from this decade you are a little behind the 8 ball recruiting against teams that have newer hardware. Also I don’t even think they have winning head to head records with the better programs in the SEC West. Move my family and lose the advantage of being a consistent top dog in your division to take on Saban in the regular season every year, no thank you. Texas A&M should try to steal Saban. Instantly takes you out of UT’s shadow. Removes the biggest obstacle between your program and national prominence. For Saban wonderful way to cement your legacy as the greatest college football coach ever. Take 3 different SEC programs to the national Championship on being a SEC newbie. Who could challenge that resume? -
I think is it a slightly unwarranted bias when compared to other teams with dismal historical records like ours. UNT doesn’t get the attention locally we deserve when the team does well. You barely see a mention of one of the only two FBS school in Texas that can win their conference this years. And TCU is still not guaranteed a shot in the title game. UNT could likely be the only team from Texas in action on FBS championship weekend and right now we are an afterthought locally. I would call that that unfair negative bias.
-
For other programs that wouldn’t matter. There is a negative bias when it comes to North Texas. Anyway I would prefer us not to get votes until next season. I don’t want P5 programs coming for Seth until next year. In my dream scenario Seth sticks around to coach Cade for at least one year as the starter. We get ranked Cade gets a little Heisman hype and we are then an attractive destination for almost all up and coming coaches. Recruiting challenges for G5 level talent would be done for a while too.

The Conference USA Championship Game
Mike Jackson replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
The only positives about playing FAU again in a winning streak is their possible over confidence. By Dec 2 the coaching staff should have a game plan that will have several tweaks to what they do best to catch them off guard. I think we can get up early on them and hold them off the rest of the game. Also we can maximize Wilson’s use as he will have plenty of time to rest before the bowl game. Get up early and play keep away with Wilson. They bite to hard hit them with a bomb to Guyton or Bussey. If the Mean Green get to the 4th with a TD lead or more I love our chances. -
The Conference USA Championship Game

I would feel much better if this was not in Boca. Also I think the game should rotate between campuses/regions regardless of the teams playing in it. It would make it easier to make travel plans for the game. -
Get Off the Hill and Into the Game
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
Stop making this thread students vs alumni both sides consistently come up short on support each Saturday. With everything going for UNT football for this game this should have been a 29,000 event or more. -
They were in the playoff last year as conference champions. And 2 national Championship since UCLA claim one in 1954. Would you perfer saying 1. USC 2nd tier the schools I mention and UCLA third tier? UCLA is a great school lovely campus but just isn’t location to win big in football. You can’t be a tier 1 football program but second fiddle in your own city let alone division. Suffice to say if you want to be known as one the best college football coaches in the country UCLA is not a location of first choice.
-
When it comes to football they haven’t won a conference title this century. UNT has just to make a comparison. Washington, Oregon, and Stanford have all been more successful than UCLA. If your last Conference title is older than most the kids you are recruiting your program is second tier in your conference.

Get Off the Hill and Into the Game
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
Plenty of people on that hill weren’t current students. Many where former students (who didn’t graduate) there exclusively to reconnect with their Greek Chapter but not UNT. That is why some of them never came in. I know this for a fact cause I discovered people I have known for years that I never knew attended UNT on Facebook post today. My statement was not meant to suggest students were exclusively the people on the Hill. -
I think Seth won't leave after this season if given a reasonable raise. The jobs coming open this year most likely are not a good fit for someone interested in stability and opportunity to win. Below is a link to a story posted Oct 25th. I believe you could add LSU's coaching situation to this list. That puts 5 SEC positions in play. However I think any coach going to that conference is taking a big risk as long as Saban is around. No job in the SEC is stable except maybe if you consistently keep Vandy and Kentucky bowl eligible those programs will keep you around. The you have programs like Nebraska on this list. They just have not accepted the new normal which has them on the outside looking in when it comes to being national championship contenders. UCLA, I don't know what there expectations are but they seem to be out of whack because they have never been good consistently in football. They are second tier in the Pac 12 behind the top tier programs like Stanford, Washington, USC., and Oregon. Seth maybe eyeing UT in the back of his mind or a SEC West Division job after Saban is gone. Also I think he wants to stay in the South. Now if the Mean Green win out the rest of the season, Saban wins the National Championship and announces his retirement at the conclusion of the championship game things could change. Seth could go to any of those SEC West openings.

Get Off the Hill and Into the Game
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
Half empty at kickoff for homecoming at kickoff does not happen everywhere. A lot G5 program maybe and poorly performing doormat P5 programs. This isn’t a poorly performing team and it is about to clinch a division title. Did not happen at Kansas State and a couple other teams I have watched over the yeras -
Weeks ago a couple of people mentioned the Greek organizations and “general student on the hill” party mentality as an attendance problem. And today Homecoming double the scene on the Hill same numbers inside the stadium. Even the Mean Green broadcast team mentioned it. So the next time someone says we don’t deserve Seth here just be quiet cause evidence shows we don’t. To all the Greeks and Students partying on the hill if it isn’t about your school then what is it about? Stop killing perfect good grass for nothing and rent a convention center room.

Nobody is mad If is about money only UNT can close that pay gap. Plus SMU would have to buy Seth out. The staff will be getting a raise and consequently probably a higher buyout at the end of this year. They may have something signed before or shortly after the Rice game. So let me say thank you in advance to the SMU Alumni for paying our next coach.

That is a lateral move for Seth and company for the most part. I could see Graham as the head coach there. Good head coaches don’t make moves within G5 unless you are counting BYU and the service academies. Only thing SMU can provide more of is money and visibility in DFW. If you are really good you can win bigger there but sustaining it is another question. The best G5 program in the country is Houston given the resources and recruiting footprint. I could see a coach falling in love there like Gary Patterson and TCU. You can run the table there and get into the playoff given a solid non-conference schedule which they have had in past seasons. And Houston would instantly vault ahead of Tech in the Big 12 pecking order if they joined the Conference.
