Kansas State vs. North Texas HOD being projected by SI
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This would be awesome. And I think if we are Conference champions the 40k UNT showing up might be a conservative estimate. And if that ends up being the case UNT might be a preferred option to a historically mediocre P5 team coming to HoD in our place. An 85% full Cotton Bowl with more than 50% of the fans there in Green on national TV would be huge.- 36 replies

No to Arkansas State, Troy and any other Sun Belt team we have played more than 3 times. I don’t even see why there is a debate especially with the earlier play date. I could at least go to Armed Forces Bowl even though I don’t want to see Army again. For college football fans not connected with either program a grudge match might be interesting drama and a scheduling ananolly that would never happen again. A football trivia question in 10 years. Armed Forces a Bowl would be my last choice but if the alternative is a match up against the Sun Belt, Army again please.

Yep, winning can’t be the top priority for recruits committing to Rice. Diploma, location and professional networking probably all outrank winning in those recriuts minds.

That is just a cover story because Shiano is not a “sexy enough” pick. Because I guarantee if he had a little more success at Rutgers and spent time on some Saban Alabama staffs most would over look his Penn State scandal connection. Unfortunately morals go out the window if you will Big enough In CFB. And it is very ironic that commitment to winning led to the cover up that cost Shiano his new job now. When it comes to Penn State karma failed big time only to be topped by the NCAA and the Big 10. This happens at one of the lower Big 10 schools they are probably kicked out of the conference and get the death penalty.

CUSA Championship Score Prediction Thread
Mike Jackson replied to GreenTexan13's topic in Mean Green Football
I think we lose by deceptively close 8 points. Out scoring then 20 to 6 in the second half. Final score 37-46. Missing onside kick with 1:48 left. But if their kicker misses 2 FG or more it could get very interesting. -
Here is a great article that for the most part doesn’t reflect on our program’s past mistakes. https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/11/27/16704020/kevin-sumlin-todd-graham-texas-am-arizona-state-coaches-fired The article basically rephrased what I wrote in another thread about programs being unreasonably impatient by on their history and infrastructure. Basically if your program has not finished the season ranked in the top 15 more than 3 to 4 (at least one of end of year rankings should have come in the last 10 years under the current head coach’s predecessor) in the pass 30 years you should be very careful firing a winning coach. The big for Mean Green fans is; are we going to lose any of our position coaches due to all this movement? I think our top Cooridinators are not going anywhere unless the defense lays 2 stinkers in the next 2 games. Also this could be an opportunity to make some coaching staff upgrades. Getting Assistants from those in limbo SEC staffs could be a major coup especially defensive minds with Texas recruiting ties. Nebraska also may have some assistants worth considering too.

I would like to add that I don’t think Seth leaves for a program that has been historically middle of the road or bottom in a P5 conference. He might make an exception for Big 12 programs like Baylor and Texas Tech just because of the location. To be considered for the best P5 jobs he needs out perform Dickey’s Sun Belt run. If he does that North Texas should be in a great position to afford to hire any of the best up and coming young Coordinators. Seth knows the potential here. And if he values stability and less scrutiny he may want to get his children through elementary school before moving to a P5 program that is a fishbowl. I think a 10 to 12 year run here is not out of the question if support grows here proportionally with success.

Can we stop talking about losing SL?
Mike Jackson replied to hickoryhouse's topic in Mean Green Football
I don’t know about Seth being our “Patterson” times are different and TCU has played “big boy” football going back to the SWC. However UNT could quickly be on par with Houston or Memphis as one the best G5 jobs you can get. In few years Apogee could be expanded to 45,000 and actually need the space. DFW is a great place to live and recruit. You could dominate CUSA most years but not incur delusional anger of fan bases in one horse (football) town like San Antonio or even Memphis. If that is to happen we need Seth around to continue the positive momentum for at least 2 more seasons. Better for him because that would just make the contract offers higher from P5 schools. I think he might want to stick around to groom Cade Pearson if he thinks he has NFL potential. Getting a QB from North Texas drafted into one the first 4 rounds of the draft would be huge for Seth going forward. -
Sumlin did not win enough but I am not sure how much you can win going against Alabama, LSU and Auburn. Will they be satisfied being 4th in their division most years? Cause assuming LSU or Auburn have down years Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mississippi State make noise from time to time. No matter how good a recuriter you are the raw talent gap is going to be minimal during most of you Conference schedule. They might be financially better off in the SEC but few programs are as financially well off as UT and the have struggled for going on 6 years now. What would be epically funny to me would be Sumlin ending up at UT in few years and making a playoff run.
-
Yep, I would take 10% of that buyout only if I could keep my old job. If not I would still be “nice” and only take 5 million.

Beating UT in Bowl game north of Austin or outside the state of Texas is the holy grail for North Texas. Even a little bigger than beating them in Austin. Beating them in Austin would be great too. But if they are having a season like Baylor had this year people just dismiss the win as that Longhorn team being an all time horrible team. Beating them as a known commodity in a Bowl game is bigger.
-
The entire SEC is nuts behind Saban’s Alabama domination. You can’t keep your job at any of these places except the bottom feeder SEC programs Vandy and maybe Kentucky. But if you are a good coach at one those “bottom feeder” schools you will probably help get coaches at all the other programs fired. The boosters and fans of these programs are insane. Seth going there would just be a money grab. Because in 3 years unless he works miracles they will be looking to fire him in Aggie land.

Bad form sir! Why would you spoil the big reveal for the Alamodome refurbishment? They were supposed to be under wraps till Bowl game week.

This will be very interesting for the next 4 years.

****OFFICIAL UNT VS. RICE GAME THREAD****

Suck it Kirk Herbstreit we covered the 12 points! -
I would much rather have the Longhorns. I like to get matchup against teams that would never come to Denton. I expect to have Texas Tech in Apogee every 5 years or so if we continue to improve.

Big 12 Realignment Thoughts Pertaining to UNT
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think the elephant in the room is the LHN which is a money loser for Disney/ESPN. The death or restructuring of the LHN is going spur conference realignment more than anything else. If the Big 12 was smart they would drop West Virginia and go after BYU, Boise State and Colorado State. Get OU and Texas in seperate divisions keeping the red river rivalary at the Cotton Bowl. -
Big 12 Realignment Thoughts Pertaining to UNT
Mike Jackson replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Bingo some of the same reasons SMU doesn’t want to share a conference with us. Also I think UT and OU don’t want to more conference rivals based in the DFW area. Houston as long as they have good coaching will be a thorn it their sides whether in the Big 12 or out. And Houston when you compare pay to pressure ratio (and opportunity for advancement) it is one the best jobs in the country. -
I heard that too. I don’t know the wisdom of that choice for Chip. I am not taking a pressure packed job at program that is second fiddle in their city. If your program has historically not been able to win recruiting battles in your county and you share a conference with them that isn’t a recipe for long term successful job.

I agree he would be the perfect great recruiting type head coach to continue the momentum Seth will hopefully leave behind after a 6 to 8 year run. Maybe he takes a two year break and want something that little further down on the pressure cooker meter. In a very few years we could be like UCF or USF vying for a New Year’s 6 Bowl. Imagine if the stars align and we end up in the Cotton Bowl (at AT&T Stadium) like Western Michigan? Program would be set for a decade of success.

If that is true, hiring a new AD is like putting a new coat of paint on a Lemon.

DRC: Five things UNT fans should know about Rice
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Sounds like if they “let it fly” and run up the score Rice’s run game won’t be able to keep up. They are a good rushing team but they aren’t the Army Black Knights. I hope they get a big lead and give both backup QBs some run. -
Agree but I believe Arkansas, UCLA, and Texas A&M are just a little unreasonable in their expectations. All of them are closer to being Oklahoma State than Ohio State. If there is good chance that most of the parents of players you are recruiting can’t remember the last time your program appeared in a title game you should have a little more patience with your coaches. You should not be firing them for not achieving things your program have never done before within 3 years.
