DRC: Three reasons UNT could be better in 2018
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I have faith they know defense is a huge issue and they will address it. How effective their remedies will be is the question. I did not mean to suggest that the any of the players on defense quit last year. I just saw them being overwhelmed by good offenses last year. And I don’t this is mostly the scheme. I would like them to be more aggressive next year. I would rather keep offenses out of rhythm and give up a few big one-on-one plays than just get nickeled and dimed down the field all game. Because once your defense is tired it is game over. The only way you can win is to score with no time on the clock like the did against Army. -
Others have already chimed in supporting my take very effectively. Find another G5 school with better attendance numbers than TCU did during that stretch (especially a small private university) and then we would have something to debate.
-
On point and that scheduling was inexcusable. Abilene Christian on the schedule really? If you going to schedule former Southland Conference foes schedule the better ones like Sam Houston State, McNeese State, and Stephen F. Austin. Then at least you can have some the local alumni from those schools help your attendance figures for a typically low attendance games against a FCS school. Also the fact there has not been any other big events there besides some high school playoff games is ridiculous. Also if he had developed a better relationship with Denton City and County officials there we could have a bowl game there (We need better traffic flow to get that done. That requires government help). If Frisco can have a bowl game and a FCS championship game there is no reason Apogee couldn't.

DRC: Three reasons UNT could be better in 2018
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I love the weapons we have on offense and the apparent depth we have at QB. Can defense be worse and not have players just quit? I doubt that. If the defense can average holding teams under 30 points we they could be very good. -
Looking forward to this game but I desperately want to beat them in Dallas one day. As for this yearI would be fine even if this is an 11:00 AM kick off at Apogee. I will we had more day games in late October. Maybe if we got on a winning streak one of those games are moved up for TV. I think the SMU game for the reasons listed in the original post makes this game more important that last year's game. We have an established incumbent coach, a veteran QB, veteran offensive weapons and home field advantage. If we can get 26,000+ Apogee should be rocking and difficult for SMU to call audibles on offense.

DRC: Three reasons UNT could be worse in 2018
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
If they are worse it will because of the defense and special teams. They get most of their offensive weapons back next year and they have a qualified back up for Fine in Shanbor. Also we have 4 of the 5 offensive linemen back from last year and they should improve with underclassmen competing to take their jobs hopefully. They might be better by end up with less that 9 wins next year. All I know is regardless of the outcome I want Seth here long enough to coach a QB that is physically bigger than Fine and more highly recruited. If we can keep him here that long the program can really turn the corner. -
I went back to back to 2009, just to be fair. I don't know what you expect from a G5 program form 2009 to 2011 they never had a crowd under 30,000. And this is before the stadium was slightly upgraded to 45,000 capacity it has today. So minus the year of construction that reduced the capacity to 32,000 temporarily in 2011 the were at over 70% capacity average for all their home games. They had a few virtual sellouts during that period. If we had a couple of sellouts and in next 3 years and averaged over 70% capacity Wren Baker might get a 10 year contract extension. TCU is small private school will a stadium that hold the entire student population and everyone who works for the university in twice over or more. If you think their attendance is bad UNT should shut down our football program. Are you a closet SMU fan with clouded objectivity?

Grades for all 130 FBS teams for the 2017 season
Mike Jackson replied to jperg2's topic in Mean Green Football
Just get wins and never get blown out when you lose. And if you do get blown out make it competitive till the 2nd half exclusively with P5 teams. -
That is being generous. How long has Denton Regional Medical Center been next.to Mayhill Road?
-
I would like to see a a couple linebackers listed at 225 lbs or slightly more. Too many teams could run the ball down our throats last year..
-
If you are not a sure fire draft pick it is stupid to turn down a free year of graduate school. If he hasn’t graduated it is all the more stupid if he doesn’t have a career plan that doesn’t include being on a NFL roster in 2018.
-
No I think real question is if Seth will leave for a second tier P5 job if he is really hot. To me a Second tier P5 is any team that hasn’t finished the bowl season ranked higher than 5 at least twice since 1975.
-
I agree with this. I think they should shoot to get the lot 85% full. Pre-sale passes for individual games at $25. Release enough passes to get to that 85% to 90% full number but charge $35 for them on game day. Make sure the attendants have more POC like The Square. And it is way past time for Bonnie Brae to be widened. Should have happened while Apogee was under construction.
-
I disagree. TCU had good attendance especially for a G5 level program before getting into the Big 12. Also they had better scheduling and conference than SMU. Stability in the coaching staff and winning. Also using public transportation SMU is the easiest sport venue to get to in DFW except the American Airlines Center. Their stadium is in desperate need of improvements in the common areas. Looks better that Fouts did no doubt but functionally under the stands it is exactly the same as Fouts. I enjoy the road games there. And if they had an Apogee level stadium at the exact same location with all the parking issues their attendance would improve 20% and more if they started winning.

It is debatable how much any of the coaches are allowed to coach in Dallas. How many people believe Garrett can bench any player he wants to bench? I would be interested in Scott joining the staff just for the connections he could bring to the table and his association with the Cowboys. I don’t like the team but I respect the power of the brand. I just wish we could get someone associated with more of their success on the staff.

DRC: Longtime member of UNT's staff (Scotty Conley) departs
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
You got too many down votes but that needed to be said. Why was he allowed stick around after the poor recruiting during Mac’s first 2 years confuses me. -
Kiffin factor Keeps Seth Here Longer?
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
That is why I said virtually impossible. Even Kansas had a great and was highly ranked one year And a few of these places can’t afford to pay a head coach over 3 million and pay the qualified and talented support staff too come on board with that coach. The top dogs in those conferences can always out spend those programs and won’t stay down for long. These are just programs I would steer my client away from as an agent. Some more so than others obviously. -
Kiffin factor Keeps Seth Here Longer?
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
I don’t think it is as simple as the dollars offered especially anything in the 3-4 million dollar range. There are some programs in the SEC that no younger coach with an interest in stability should touch. There are also about 10 P5 program that are virtually impossible legitimately compete for a conference title at no matter how good a coach you are. Places like Kansas, Indiana, Colorado, Minnesota, Vandy, Kentucky, Purdue and Rutgers to name a few. But of course there is dollar figure that can entice any coach to go anywhere but for Seth I would think that would start at 4.5 million or above. If I were his agent at the end of next year I would advise him only consider 4.5 million offers or above if he were considering taking one of the more difficult programs to win at that have a track record of giving coaches less than 5 years to win. -
Time for some fun “pure speculation”. I started thinking today; what if Kiffin stays a FAU 3 more years and dominates the conference? How will that impact Seth’s timeline here? Will he stay longer to get a CUSA championship on his resume? Now this is assuming success similar to last year. An undefeated regular run against all G5 level opponents except FAU (assuming we lose to them in the CUSA championship game 3 more times also) still has him extremely marketable and likely to leave sooner rather than later. Also I think it goes without saying that Seth needs to preside over a team that plays consistent decent (upper half of conference) defense to get some of the best P5 jobs offered to him. What do you think? Does Kiffin dominating Seth keeps Seth here longer or no impact?
-
A lot of unnecessary shots at a coach I don’t even remember. The only way I would care is if you could show me how his leadership led to programs like Boise State (a former Conference rival) shooting way past us in the FBS pecking order. Otherwise wish him well and just move on.

If this doesn’t fit the definition of “fake news” nothing does.

DRC: UNT football notes -- Army series note
Mike Jackson replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Kind of wish these games were scheduled earlier. -
Why this of relevance on gmg.com? He presided over a dismal period in Mean Green Football. He was a bad hire by a mediocre Athletic Director trying to be frugal. We got exactly what they paid for. Expecting him out do Dickey just because the new stadium was finalized was just stupid. Let’s stop looking back please except when it is time to replace our head coach. We want to learn from past mistakes.

Absolutely spot on that is why going to the New Orleans Bowl was a bad decision. The post bowl Beyond the Green did an excellent PR job. However this beat down by Troy will have a negative effect on recruits, FBS fans and media not familiar with UNT. Marketing should be the first concern when trying to schedule a Bowl game for UNT right now. You can’t market a beat down loss to a Sun Belt team.
