North Texas - Rice Official Game Thread
Mike Jackson replied to Professor Lambeau's topic in Mean Green Football
Sounds good I hope they live up to their words and our reasonable expectations. I just don’t want to get my hopes up to be disappointed. -
Or with elite running abilities to offset the poor accuracy.

I fear with the injuries excuse, the large buyout, and CUSA exit fee he will be back with 4 wins. I hope I am wrong -

This was the worst coaching I have seen at North Texas while beating a FBS team with more than one win on the season. They took their injured QB and captain out on a cart and then came back to take us into OT? I just feel pathetic for cheering for them. A glutton for punishment like an alcoholic hobo drinking the cheapest rot gut Tequilas I can scrap pennies together to get. -

I am in. Only if we take them to Seth’s front yard and cover them with bird seed. -

WTH kind of grab 🍑 arrangement do they have going on? Can anyone confirm that is what is going on? Who okayed it? Drawing 350k for part time work? No wonder unpaid athletes aren’t listening to him full time with discipline. -

Not good refs in football. Basketball absolutely because there are so many more gray area judgment calls and far more calls in general. Working the refs in at FBS level and above is very over rated. Get your team prepared to play well and the calls with balance out most of the time. -

Good for Torrey he deserves to keep pushing his career numbers up. That is all that is left for him to play for. I appreciate him so much this year. Team totally unwatchable without his contribution most games this year. -

Take off those Green Tinted glasses please. I really appreciate the passion and loyalty but that delusion is going too far. We will get through this eventually not need make mountains out of molehills-(refs and sideline coach demeanor) to distract from how bad this team is. On the bright side we won’t have to worry about bad CUSA refs come 2023. -

Man I want to give Aune a benefit of a doubt. But every 5 passes he throws something almost unbelievably bad. -

I was about say I am not worried about them winning. But I did not have any reason to believe they might win this game against Rice before their QB was just wheeled off the field. A loss today still shuts the door on the possibility of them wining 4 more games. But now with their QB and captain going down there is an opening. -

Man this thread is dead. Lots of diehards no longer care to watch. The ESPN crew talking up our injuries. For Goodness Sake, I hope that doesn’t save Seth’s job. -

Thumbs down on uniform and helmet combination. Did anyone understand why Rice got to re—kick after the out of bounds kick? -
I would think that having La Tech, Louisiana and ULM in the same conference would be great for fans and alumni of those schools. I don’t know why this played out so badly for La Tech but they should have be angling to have another Louisiana school in their conference that isn’t Tulane. This isn’t all on Judy. But if she didn’t tell them this “no man’s land scenario was a legit possibility after looking at the landscape when Texas and OU kicked all this off re-alignment then 80% - 90% is.

Facilities - Existing AAC School Points to UNT’s Example
Mike Jackson replied to chomp's topic in Mean Green Football
Spot on. This part of Texas is not exactly a hotbed of baseball talent and fan interest. We at least had 3 minor league teams fold or move from the area in the past 20 years. Two before Covid. And the Air Hogs probably would have folded without Covid. They merged with an Amarillo team to stay afloat before Covid was an issue. I just had to look up the Denton Outlaws. (At the time they were active I thought they were a pizza joint. I got them confused with Pizza Patron I think. 😂) No rush for baseball. It will hemorrhage money getting started and it makes balancing thing for title 9 a little harder. I love the SuperPit. The location is perfect. If the AD doesn’t own it then something should worked out. Even if there is a compromise and the new Arena takes over the block that had Sac & Save, IHOP, and McDonalds long ago. You can move those offices anywhere. -
Specific Top Candidates for Next UNT HC
Mike Jackson replied to Billy Clyde's topic in Mean Green Football
I am 100% with this comment. On the offensive side of the ball a competent QB would fix ALOT of our issues. If the AD doesn’t want to get away from the spread offense I am not excited about any HC who is a spread guy. Also look at our timeline here. If Graham is so great then we should have wished Seth luck at KSU and promoted Harrell to HC. Our problem for most of the last decade was defense and QB play. A Spread System Head Coach coming in will most likely be able to fix the QB play at best. But if your best QB gets injured or transferred you might be screwed. Because when you have poor QB play that is when you lean more on your defense. The way offense is played now, you can use smoke and mirrors to get 24 points. But when your defense can’t hold anyone under 35 points your team is screwed. -

Look up this resume. Would you be interested in a DC many think is headed for a NFL position within 2 years if he stays in Houston and the HC doesn’t get fired? If Saban gives him an endorsement as DC there isn’t a lot better out there without NFL Coordinator or FCS Head Coahing experience in the price range I assuming will be the 1.2 million to 2.1 million range. My preference would be to get the Head Coach that can assemble the best assistant coaching staff. Hopefully by paying a younger candidate 1.2 million we can retain more of that staff when the head coach leaves. If a younger head coach departs for a NFL Coordinator position I believe you can retain more of the staff built here. -

Nothing against Graham Harrell but I am not interested in a first time HC with FBS OC being their highest level of experience. Especially if they are from the Mike Leach coaching tree. The spread is the most popular offense in college football these days. I doubt any Mike Leach disciple is going to change this offense drastically in a positive fashion unless they are bring in better talent or are drastically better evaluators of the talent that might be hidden here currently. If we are going the Assitant route and want to get maximum reward and don’t mind the risk. Doug Belk is the guy. He is young for the position but just a little younger that Harrell. He is the best defensive coach in Texas right now that you might be able to hire. He would inject a lot of energy. And recruits serious about their future as defensive players would more likely come here. If we can get Phil Bennett to stay on with him and mentor/assist him in the head coaching responsibilities it would be a home run I think. -
You know what is the best and most simple thing to do? Win. Alabama has an elephant. Georgia Tech are Yellow Jackets but they have a Rambling Wreck they are known for also. The Hurricanes have a dumb looking bird running around. I don’t have to say which hurricanes because this one wins. What the hell is a Buckeye? Could you draw what a real one accurately for $1,000 cash right now based on memory? What’s a Nittany Lion? And it seems like Oregon never wears the same uniforms twice. And don’t get me started with schools primarily known for Basketball. 1. Win 2. Win 3. Win 4. Stop Tinkering with your primary Green (alternate black jersey and/or pants once in a while but they should never be a jersey completely devoid of Green & White) 5. Limit those throw back uniforms with NT helmets for out of conference homecoming games against old FCS rivals SFA, McNeese State, and Sam Houston. (Maybe Texas State if they are the homecoming game) 6. Stick with the Eagle. A year after the Arkansas win a cashier in the Little Rock area commented on some North Texas stuff I had on. You know why? We kicked that state flagship university team’s ass on national TV. I been through that state over a 12 times over the past decade. Not once did I ever get an comment on my North Texas stuff. “Kick ass and take names” should be Kick ass and they will remember your name.

My Coaching Wish List at the Moment
Mike Jackson replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
I just think Seth is a good OC (but over rated). I don’t think it is a matter of passion, I think it is the skill set. Being an OC is very different than being a head coach. And each college you have navigate their unique culture to find the best assistants that will fit in and so well. Some programs have enough resources to pay (which includes prestige) and retain assistant coaches we don’t. I don’t think he is in cruise control at all. Once his offense was installed he became a hot commodity, lost staff, and got more focused on the weaker parts of his team and the offense suffered. A hard no on Art Briles anything big they do will put the NCAA microscope on us. Go beat a big name brand like Arkansas with Art at the helm every sandwich with extra meat a Football Player receives will be audited. I just think we need a HC with experience improving a G5 program. And the OC and DC they bring in will be just as important. We need some great talent evaluators. I believe with really good talent and an efficient QBs you can keep your program above 0.500 in AAC for a good stretch. Just keep getting to bowl games every year and play decently in them and the perception of the program changes. -
That is most worrisome part of it to me which why I posed the question. I don’t expect a “fan friendly” hire but I do expect a timeline with the fans in mind. Stagnation in sports program is death. And stagnation at the bottom is worse. With Seth at the helm and not seeing QB’s that may have the potential to be better than Aune and Ruder this program looks like worse version of stagnation at a FBS program I could imagine. Usually teams this bad the coach is in his first-second year or lost their best QB, offensive player and defensive player to injury.

I am s long suffering Denton native and UNT Alumni. Not nearly as committed as your post suggest you were at one time but I did hold season tickets at Apogee for couple of seasons. As the disappointment increased the number I purchase each year counted from 4 to zero. The questions you posed are huge but I really don’t think it is all that hard to rectify each of them. They weren’t even serious about Football until they started to the push to build Apogee. So in my opinion they really weren’t trying until they hired Mac. Hiring a first time coach at the FBS level to be Head Coach was a farce. It was a legacy of them trying to do things on the cheap. That is part of the reason Seth is still on the sidelines today. The other part is the Covid outbreak. I would hope had the Covid season never happened and they end that year with 5 wins or less he doesn’t coach the team at all in 2021. RV was a severely flawed AD and the end of Dickey was handled without class. The Sun Belt run was great and if we had the stadium and facilities we have today back then we are having positive conversations here more often. And maybe Dickey is about to retire or move up the FBS ranks as the winningest coach of Mean Green history. Seth has not won a big game here 0 for in bowl games and beaten to a pulp like he was clueless in the conference championship game. That should have clued everyone in that he might be just a good coach at best not great. Now it is in doubt that he is even a good coach. Highlighting the success of regional rivals and conference peers makes that glaring also. Nine wins and losing bowl games should only get you extensions at programs that are regularly at the bottom of the conference; Kansas, Vanderbilt, Rice, and Kent State Where we go from here is up if they hire the right coach. All you have to do here is win and be 0.500 against the regional rivals and play them tough when you lose to them. Throw in about 2 Conference Championships in period of 5 consecutive winning seasons and the program turns the corner in a permanent way. (Dickey did not have that.). You can win every season but you should be competent and not at the bottom of a G5 conference ever.

A masterclass of awful coaching was put on today
Mike Jackson replied to ntmeangreen11's topic in Mean Green Football
If he isn’t the best QB on the roster eligible and healthy to play then Seth is beyond just being a bad coach. I refuse to believe that any coach once as highly thought of a Seth could be that bad.
