Grambling St. hires ex-Baylor coach Art Briles as OC
Mike Jackson replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Mean Green Football
That is kind of ridiculous to stretch my statement into saying that I suggest he led young men astray. Moral oversight means being aware and vigilant of major off the field issues and taking appropriate action when you discover players and/or coaches going rogue. He failed at that. Fact is that he is 66 and I want my OC to be around 5 years or more if possible. That isn’t the stage of his life or career. And he is totally unqualified to hold a FBS head coaching position with his moral oversight failure IMO. I want an OC on his way up not on his way down coming off a very bad scandal.- 40 replies

Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to give him a job in the realm where failed miserably when it comes to moral oversight. He is 66 and has plenty of money to retire comfortably. Maybe hire him as a part time consultant coaching the assistant coaches, teaching them his system and breaking down tape the day after games. He should have no contact with recruits or player and his involvement shouldn’t be announced in a celebratory fashion. Although I wouldn’t like it, here as a consultant with head coach with approaching his fourth strike would make sense. It would a tangible positive move on the coaching staff from an X & O’s standpoint. Right now we got zilch except hoping that an unknown commodity can make this offense better in 2022.- 40 replies

Why did this comment get downvotes? Rudy was just stating facts as he knows them. Downvoting Rudy’s comment is not a downvote for Judy. 🤷🏽♂️🤣

I wish we would have gotten the chance to see him play. It's not like the QB playing were lighting up the stats sheets or winning. I would really like to she the coaches’ notes on him from practice. It’s just hard to believe he was so bad he couldn’t get some playing time here.

I loved that 😂🤣😂😂

Other people have answered better than me. Therefore I will ask you some questions. 1. Are you content with the HIGHLIGHT of a Mean Green Football season beating an undefeated TODDLER program? * When it comes to experience having a Football program UTSA is toddler program barely out of its infancy. This UTSA team regardless of us beating them this year achieved more than ANY Mean Green football team in over 100 years. That victory was heavily aided by bad weather limiting a dome team that likes to throw the ball. That UTSA team also won CUSA Championship something this 2022 Mean Green team, barring an unforeseen miracle season, won’t do before we leave for an even tougher AAC conference. 2. Are you content with 3 straight losing seasons? *our best players from that 5 game run you are waxing poetic about are leaving. BTW those are the only FBS teams we beat this year. (Victories over FCS teams shouldn’t count towards bowl eligibility imo). 3. Are you content with other young football programs who pay their coaches less than we do kicking our ass more times than vice versa during Seth’s tenure? 4. Do you realize with 39 bowl games (78 teams) that getting to a bowl game only means your team isn’t one of the worst in college football? Well over half of FBS 131 teams go to a bowl. The current bowl landscape pales in comparison to landscape when really good WINNING Hayden Fry teams couldn’t get a bowl invitation. I never would have guessed that being one game below mediocre and playing spoiler to UTSA, a school that was 3 years away from even having team when this Old Man graduated in 2008 would have some Mean Green fans content. Wow.

While I am listening to the new SMU coach get 30 minutes on drive time sports radio, it makes me all the more upset Seth was retained. If this 2022 season isn’t a total waste of time in regards to the program’s long term goals it will be a miracle.

Not to diminish what Mason Fine accomplished here in anyway, But we absolutely need a “Mason Fine type”. We need 65% completion percentage from our QB to get to 7 wins in the regular season. Asking for his “clutchness” and TD/INT ratio might be asking a little much but we absolutely need a near 65% completions from QB to really compete. Also that is assuming the defensive performance doesn’t fall off which is big IF given the transfers we had from that side of the ball. So if this defense gives up +23 points a game, ball control and scoring will be critical to be in most games. You can’t do that unless completion rates are good or you average big yards per attempt.
-
No he is being “cucked” by his team’s subpar performance and his failure to develop a QB who can complete 60% of his passes. “Let It Fly” has turned into “Let It Fly, into the ground” and the leadership appears to be all good with that. 🤷🏽♂️

I realize you were just responding to an illogical challenge of a very logical assumption. But you should never omit why the donations should be low. This football program is probably the most underachieving FBS program in the state when you look at the money being put into it and all the other resources it has. Let’s make sure we aren’t even implying that we are criticizing fans for lack of financial support of football until they get above 0.500 for a month.

Most of our competitive disadvantages are self inflicted. This pales in comparison to what Coach Frye had to deal with while here. Most of disadvantages at that time weren’t compounded by bad decisions the program made. I am getting a little fatigued with “whining about the system” and speculation from fans and alumni of a school that habitually makes bad decisions regardless of the landscape of CFB or level college football UNT choses to play at. Underachievement is the reason we don’t have fan & alumni support to fund a NIL. More than like they are flushing more revenue in the future via support of an improving program down the toilet by “saving” Seth’s buyout money. That extension is one of many in a long list of bad decisions that just stack upon each other in repercussions. I just wonder how much space in the UCF forum is dedicated to whining about NIL and transfer rules. The rules will hurt bad programs just like academics standards, scholarships limits and limits on official visits did before. Adapt to the system, maximize the resources at your disposal and improve…. It has been demonstrated Seth is struggling doing that so by keeping him you are playing bad odds with very little payoff if you defy them. It would be a miracle for them to be still in the running for a division title come early November 2022. That status should be unacceptable for a coach coming into his 6th season unless you lose 4 or more players the season previous to the NFL draft. Maybe if the coach had above 0.500 season consistently you would give him a pass but that isn’t the case here. The administration is stacking bad decisions on top of each other but some want to complain about the system? The criticism & speculation maybe warranted but it doesn’t do a &$@! thing to address the root of our program’s underachievement.

What was the G5 before new transfer rules? School that were primary destination for student athletes not academically or athletically good enough for P5. Where is the all this extensive history of G5 playing in elite New Years Day Bowls or competing for National Championships? They weren’t. Even today let’s look at the 4 G5 teams joining the P5 via Big 12 expansion. Only UCF has no previous conference history featuring teams in P5 conferences. FBS College football has never been a meritocracy when it comes to scheduling, post season, and national championships. You want something closer to a meritocracy drop down to FCS. However I don’t recommend that for fan interest or profile of our school.

Actually 2022 if it pans out as projected will be the 4th downward season.

So How Many Spots Are Still Open?
Mike Jackson replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, and it not worth guessing -
🙄 what “good ole days” College Football are you people talking about?. I had to actually look up the National Champions since 1980 to make sure I wasn’t going in crazy. BYU was the only uncontested Champion I vaguely had recollection of not rampantly paying players under the table. (Due to their religion they often had the most mature teams in CFB. And I may still be underestimating BYU paying players under the table). Other than BYU they are paupers like Nebraska showing up frequently. I am sorry but if you were a big fan near college age in 1984 you have way more coherent College Football Saturdays behind you than ahead of you. College Football was going to loose those eyeball fairly soon enough due to natural causes not NIL and transfer rules. 🤣 There was never a time in College Football when it was remotely balanced as the NFL. The top 15 brands in College football have ALWAYS dominated the national championship landscape. NIL didn’t change that. It now that more attention is being paid now with all the media and people finally realize the emperor never had clothes on to begin with. 🙄

Saying that we win here us absolute BS! Have we ever beat had a winning season and beat a P5 team that appeared in a Bowl game the same year: NO. Have we have a 10 win regular season: NO. We won 1 first round game in the NCAA tournament. Have we played in and won a bowl game than was existence before 1990: NO. I looked through the Wikipedia NIT records by school saw 100 listed but not UNT. I am sure we appeared before 2021…..(I hope). My guess is that we have a 7 game record in the NIT with like a 2-5 record. . So where is all the big winning Denton and/or UNT Alumni are supposed to be supporting? We are SMU’s bastard cousin they don’t want to claim as a rival. [AND THEY BEAT US 4 out of every 5 times we play] I am sick of us diehards blaming everything under the Sun except horrendous decisions like retaining Seth and hiring staff full of 1st time at the college level coaching staff to follow up a respectable run by Todd Dodge. I emphasize respectable not good because he at least got us on the map by winning the weak Sun Belt consecutive years. That is more than I can say for any coach here since 1990.

Stop hyping or downgrading these commits individually please. It’s meaningless and only hurts the perception of the program at this point. Hopefully all these guys are ready to work hard through the challenges they will face at UNT. I welcome all of them whether they have stars or not.

The Miami Hurricanes were the last non-traditional school to breakthrough and win a National Championship. You think they weren’t paying players the most? Or are you one the few that think SMU was the only school doing that blatantly before the 1990s? If so I have this crypto money investment opportunity that is foolproof guaranteed to give you a 20% return on your money for 10 years.

Blame everyone else and retaining a mediocre head coach? This is EXACTLY why in over 25 years of FBS football the Mean Green has underachieved. 🙄. All the G5 schools that have surpassed our team’s accomplishments during that time have the exact same challenges and some have/had more challenges than UNT. I just listened to a segment of about National Signing Day on 1310 The Ticket. The most dominant sports radio station in the North Texas market. And the Muser’s morning show has 2 UNT Alumni. They mentioned every FBS school in DFW area plus the regional Big 12 schools, and Deion Sander’s FCS school. They didn’t mention UNT because they know their market doesn’t care about mediocre/bad UNT Football. SMU will kick our ass. Excuses and blame shifting is the go to response for losing programs. If you want to win you self evaluate and make the painful choices that pushes your team in the right direction. If we are going to do this crap let’s start a campaign to hire Jason Garrett. At least then our mediocrity will be news worthy for 2 seasons. 🤦🏽♂️

SL record should be better than Dickey’s based on the upgrades, in resources, coach pay, training facilities, academic growth. Dickey inherited a team new to FBS football, that wasn’t exactly a powerhouse at FCS. We aren’t even in a position to hire Seth without Dickey making the program look respectable at the FBS level. And remind me how many Conference Titles and Bowl Wins Seth has. Dickey has team hardware in the trophy case where is Seth’s? Just stop. You can simple say you don’t like what I have to say and call it a day. Go Mean Green.

I don’t get the point of posting this topic. I wish all the athletes who contributed here well. It would be different if we were coming off a great season with depth behind them that was already challenging them for the starting position. Can we find something else to talk about or leave this in topics already posted?

We have a nice stadium and the basketball program is doing well. That was in response to someone asserting that we on a Gonzaga like run off the strength of 3 good seasons, 1 win in the NCAA tournament and a CUSA title. Basketball should enjoy better support that it receives but no reason to take shot in the Football section of this form. I don’t go in that section complaining about lack of football support. 🙄. BTW I thoroughly enjoyed Dickey’s run, Mac’s Dallas Bowl team. The two 9-win Mason Fine season were great also. But anyone who doesn’t realize our revenue programs have drastically underperformed for most of its history are delusional. We shouldn’t be playing catch up to programs far younger than ours.
