El Paso Eagle, I think we are getting in the way of a desperate love fest for the most delusional. We are supposed to think an alltime rushing performance is something we can rely on to win game against good teams and win against good teams in spite of an anemic passing game. We are seriously debating the value of an OC of a team I have to pray there isn't a disaster on 3rd & 6 yards or longer. 🤦🏾♂️. He is doing an adequate job coaching around our deficiencies but our deficiencies aren't cause injuries this year. I feel like I am conversing with blood relatives of coaching staff on this board. 🤣. They could have very easily lost that game if they only rushed for 300 yards.

Can we beat UTSA, WKU, or UAB?
Mike Jackson replied to UNT Family Man's topic in Mean Green Football
Run it more. More. More. More. 60+ attempts. Throw it only on 1st downs and only off PA and end every possession with a kick. That's the formula. A very hard formula to pull off. Especially if your defense is just mediocre. This isn't the triple option. Aune is going to have to hurt them with his legs on pure option plays for this formula to work also. I just don't see it. And the UTSA QB not having to deal with the elements is going to hang at least 27 on us. -
Bar is extremely low here. That is why this was posted in the first place. Remember when the tag line on this page was "Seth is Gonna Let in Fly"? But now we are going to talk about how the current OC should get "more credit"? The passing game isn't even complimentary to the very strong running game. Finding creative ways to take the QB dropping back and passing is good. But they should not have to game plan like that with QB room without a freshman in it. And you aren't going to beat teams with by good defenses that way. Maybe UTSA and WKU can be dominated running the ball but I doubt it.

Kason Martin returns with an amazing game!
Mike Jackson replied to Tom McKrackin's topic in Mean Green Football
Good point. Yes, he probably wasn't given a fair shot, I don't know timeline of his overlap time on the roster with Mason Fine. However it doesn't matter, I don't need any more evidence to be disappointed in the ability of this coaching staff to coach the passing game. I just rather wish Kason well and not be depressed about another talent wasted here. 😂 -

You can't pound the rock any better than they did yesterday. Aune was still 55% under 200 yards with an interception that cost the team a likely 3 points. You aren't beating good teams. -

No downvote from me but I did give an eyeroll. 😂. But the fascination with players who transfered out of here and weren't good when they were here is a little confusing. 🤷🏽♂️. Best of luck to all the young men that tried their best here. But if you are stepping down to FCS, I don't see why anyone cares who doesn't know him personally or have ties to his highschool or the college he transfered to. 🤷🏽♂️ -
No this is what happens when your leadership's commitment to excellence suspect. Half your fanbase is justifiably concerned that their under 0.500 head coach will be extended after an 7-5 season. The extension will make him the longest tenured FBS head coach in the state of Texas by at 4 years going into year 8. So sad the state of affairs when the few fans are left are praising individual staff members for anything positive they can find. "FBS Head Coach in the near future somewhere besides UNT" and a coach on our current staff shouldn't be in the conversation. Yet here it is. We probably spend more than Rice and New Mexico State combined on coaches since we joined CUSA. I am not just BS-ing either as a "SL hater" New Mexico State HC Pay. 0.600 mil Rice HC Pay 0.950 mil North Texas 1.7 mil

It isn't about a formation I prefer. It is about how you execute it. The spread works best when you can efficiently pass the ball and be balanced and if you are a little unbalanced ideally run the spread it would tilt toward passing effiency and yards. That is why most fans and I aren't very hopeful that we go 2-1 in the next 3 games. I DON'T have a preference of how this team is offensively successful but ANYONE who knows football knows a balanced offense is the way to go unless you are running the triple option(all you want in that service academy system is about 8-10 attempts max and 3 to 5 big plays out of the passing game max). They ran the ball great and if the passing game was more efficient this game wouldn't have had any drama in the last quarter even with the defensive struggles.

And we really can pass ourselves to match up. You get this team in 3rd & 5 yards or more I am just hoping there isn’t an interception or huge sack. -
Coaching around a bad QB in a spread offense? How about coaching up a QB on your roster to complete 60% of his passes ESPECIALLY when you have a good offensive line and run game. I am not criticizing him just being objective. No FBS team in the country should covet him as a head coach based on just being prudent. Now if he installed a run option heavy offense and threw in a 10 play QB under center package and the offense mixed in and executed well, I would be impressed. One of their coach around the QB moves, the wildcat formation was plagued with pre-snap penalties. This after a bye week,. he deserve “credit” for that also? 🤨

Yes, it is the alcohol talking and you should never drink that brain rot swill again. 😂. Top Dawg I’m the conference only matters at the end of the season not midway. There aren’t any midseason conference championship trophies or guaranteed bowl invitations (you can reach bowl eligibility but 6 wins only guarantees you a bowl slot if one is available in a bottom tier bowl). And if we win against UTSA that is only 5 wins. No fan should really want to see a Seth extension without a conference championship or a bowl win against a ranked team.
-
Agreed and I don’t know why Seth defenders aren’t worried about a team winning in spite of having a mediocre passing game. To their credit they are coaching around that deficiency. That is what those wildcat formation plays were about especially the ones after the first couple resulted in false start penalties. Any team going forward and trust their secondary to play just okay, goes man to man and the defense should sellout trying to stop the run. Even with a historic running game today Aune still couldn’t hit 60% of his passes. If that repeats in a dome against UTSA I don’t like our chances.

Two subpar passers and people trying to argue the dude putting up slightly better numbers and is an elite running threat playing against P5 defenses isn’t better? I hate the board sometimes.
-
The numbers are the same. And Bean as a take it to house threat everytime he keeps it on an option play makes the run game even better throwing below 70% from the pocket with adequate protection. And in Aune’s case I am not talking 70% completions, I am just wanting 70% on target on time throws. The receivers route running factors into that also but that is just another indication the passing game coaching is substandard here. I also think that if Kansas had Bean and Aune available to them with a same amount of time in their system, Bean would still be on the depth chart ahead of Aune. So in my mind that makes Bean better.

We were very late to alt-black uniform trend. I do like these jerseys, but they wouldn’t be one that I would purchase. As for the helmets they are cool. But what I would love to see an alt-black Hayden Frye tribute helmet with a Flying Worm really standing out against the black. The white worm would coordinate with the white pants. The flying worm is one the most unique things we have in our branding traditions. I think rolling it out once year would be really cool and attention grabbing.

The most overpaid coach in college football?
Mike Jackson replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
You are wrong he got TWO extensions only one of which were deserved. The first of those 2 raises were deserved. But I wouldn’t say ‘well’ deserved because the teams weren’t competitive in their post season games on top of just losing them. Before the good showing against Army, UTEP stomped us 52-24 preventing us for qualifying for a bowl game with 6 wins without a waiver. Coaches who don’t win post season games don’t get multiple extensions and raises when they are already on the top paid in their conference. Also it doesn’t help that most of the teams that curb stomped us aren’t well known to your causal FBS fan. Getting stomped by Utah State, FAU, and Troy State in a bowl game is a net zero or negative especially if recruit that is on the fence takes notice.- 63 replies

I think they have improved since the 73-0 Western Kentucky massacre. New Mexico State is bad but the did beat them by 14 in Las Cruces so that at least makes them better than the Aggies. 🤷🏽♂️. So if they are the 2nd worse team in FBS and FIU played the tough most of the first half, I think them murdering us shouldn’t be an expectation. If they beat us by more than 17 I would be very surprised.
-
Yeah, I head ESPN is going to chip in a whole extra Benjamin to the next TV deal if they add Kennassaw State but only if they don’t have a problem with their name being abbreviated to Ken. St. They are hoping to get a few confused Kent State fans to at least get through one commercial break before changing the channel. That should get them to that 1,000 viewer mark they are hoping for.
-
Watching them also FIU looks like it might be a tougher game than we expect if they clean up their unforced errors. UTSA definitely looks bearable. Quarterback’s ball security in the pocket is still a weakness for them. And the offensive line look average.

How many wins triggers Seth extension?
Mike Jackson replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Mean Green Football
God bless Corky Nelson's soul. But as a Denton native and UNT alumni I had to Google search him. Being remembered as a coach who tried hard but was under 0.500 and never won a post season game is a good thing? Also I developed my love for the college football game day experience by going to a couple of KSU games in the late 1990s. I live in Denton for all of Corky's time here, as a huge football fan. My classmates and I (including talented athletes that the program could have used in the 90s) did not have UNT football enter our conscious until they gave out free tickets. And still I remember Denton High games at Fouts more fondly and vividly than Mean Green Games. Hell I don't even remember if Scrappy (or Eppy) was at the game I went to and who they played. -

Mike Jackson replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Mean Green Football
Seth isn't average, below 0.500 overall and more significantly under 0.500 without counting wins over FCS. He shouldn't have started 2022 as head coach. 🤷🏽♂️ -
I do believe this game is pivotal to any chances of the team being better than 6-6 this year. Because if they lose and Aune plays to his typical below mediocre standard, no one besides the coaching staff is going to expect better play from him the rest of the year. That is deflating to the team (even though they would never let outsiders hear about it)and puts a lot of pressure on the run game and defense. A loss here and then you go on the road to face the both CUSA division winners from last year. I think even the most diehard Mean Green fans viewed splitting those 2 games is the best we could reasonably expect. If they lose to La Tech and the aren't 3-6 come November 1 everyone should be surprised. And a serious program would pull the trigger on firing Seth shortly after the 6th loss before November.

No other excuse/reason are possibly valid except this one. And once I accept that I won't be supporting athletics at all like +80% of local alumni. And I won't be posting here anymore and wonder why the few that do continue. Never once did I state that we should always be at the top of G5. But it is absolute waste of money to be circling the drain near the bottom and celebrating 5-6 against FBS with the same number of scholarships available to them. It is actually embarrassing most seasons and doesn't shine a positive light on the university. And if they aren't going to demand above 0.500 against FBS competition they should drop down to FCS.
