I absolutely understand both the apprehension/refusal to hire Dickey and the desire to have a home grown redemption career cap off story. I absolutely think he could be successful here. And I think he could absolutely recruit he pointing to his resume, since he left, practice facility named after him, and trophy case with the most recent conference titles UNT has. I actually think it would be a low risk hire. No one understands where UNT has been, how far we have come and seen the level we want to get to like he does. He will definitely want to win and grow his legacy. But I am curious also. What is the fear? He isn't bringing the power I option game back here.

Breaking News Seth Littrell has been fired.
Mike Jackson replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
Please stop saying this because it is not true. We have 25 conference titles and that is 13th in all of FBS. That to me is not indicative of a program that just wants to win homecoming, an FCS game and 2 to 3 other games a year. Pre-2005 bowl game standard his teams would might have gotten bowl invitations twice. Third place G5 conference finishers and teams with losing records against FBS did not go to bowl regularly before 2005. Seth was a class act, hard working coach who did everything he thought was right to be successful. -
You can't be serious. Kirby Smart spent over 7 years under Saban. Harrell coaching experience has been under Seth, Clay Helton, Neal Brown and one year under Leach. Not remotely I the same ballpark when it comes to grooming.
-
The opportunity for that was last year. You can't let Seth langiush here and then bring in his protegee. I would love to have him back if we went with one of the few big name defensive background experience head coaches out there. Being Head Coach here takes a lot more than good X & O background.

K. C. Keeler makes too much Sense

The real question is how moronic is it to hang on to an "offensive mind coach" who can't find or coachup a good starting QB? Or how long do you give him to prove that he can't. You a poop pooping this guy for not having 2 serviceable quarterbacks. Maybe 2 rings and a couple of coach of the year awards might have you give him a pass. 🤣 -

Mason Fine & Harrell worked the 3-4 years. We need a better "offensive mind" than just getting lucky with a too short QB without other major scholarships offers. -
Breaking News Seth Littrell has been fired.

I laughed because it is probably true, painful as that is. Seth isn't even here for 2022 if Phil doesn't get the defense playing decently for the 2nd half of 2021 season. -

I disagree the standard has always been winning conference! He survived 3 consecutive losing seasons. (2 of them pretty terrible) North Texas has 25 Conference Championships that is tied for 13th in all of FBS. He is a good guy and maybe a good head coach elsewhere but there is no need to give him credit he doesn’t deserve. These new Tiddyman Bowls created after 2005 have cheapened the achievement of making a bowl game. -

Dude we can't complain now. It was too late when Aune was named the starter for 2022. 🤷🏾♂️. I am so relieved now I can start making plans for the bowl game. -
K. C. Keeler makes too much Sense

I definitely get that maybe I should have said "within our budget range". I really hope we don't skimp on assistants just to get a "big name" at the top. Herman may have been my choice if we went that route, I think he is top notch on straight X & Os. You get hungry, hard worker, that are good recuirters who are currently undervalued were they are under a "big name" with great schemes and you have something. I just would prefer a staff with an hour apparent on it when the current coach retires or moves up top P5 job. -
K. C. Keeler makes too much Sense
Mike Jackson replied to Mike Jackson's topic in Mean Green Football
And to the downvoters; what do you want to see? An FCS Championship winning head coach not good enough for UNT? I would appreciate your thoughts as to why Keeler not good hire and who realistically in the school's budget range would be better and available. -
Seth Coaching 0% I am going 20% I watch on TV Seth not coaching and permanent coach for 2023 announced 90% chance going 100% TV if not there in person.

I believe he is the best affordable and available hire we could make. I really want an experienced successful FCS Head Coach (with key members from his support staff) familiar with recruiting in our state with disadvantages. Yes I dream we could grab Gary Patterson with fire in his belly to take over DFW FBS football again. I don't think UNT has the budget to pay the assistants he would want to bring with him. Keeler makes under 600k right now. We tripple his salary and he can bring the best of his staff with him and they would probably get similar raises. He has put in the time, worked hard and been successful. Probably better hire than Seth for UNT at the time Seth was flirting with KSU. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/K._C._Keeler That is part the reason I am furious that Seth is still here. The relationship leadership and fanbase around here is as if guys like Keeler don't exist and that Seth was our only chance to be successful. Give this guy or someone like him 5 years, give him modest raises that don't extend his time here until they actually win some hardware or you get to year 4 and you've seen consistent improvement. I found this guy with a Google search imagine what so called professionals should be able to do. 🤣

No think bigger talk to their head coach.
-
We ALL deserve a reason to hope for future success beyond 0.500.
-
Man one can only hope. There should be announcement tomorrow on Seth's status; small extension, no change, or dismisal.
-
We likely won't be in future bowl games if leadership continues to make bad decision. With the 12 team playoff I believe a lot of these fringe bowl games are going away completely. In general national audiences are not interested in 2 mediocre G5 teams playing in a post season exhibition. I think only G5 championship game losers earning bowl invitations. And I think even those spots won't be guaranteed. For instance a Boise State rank ahead of us in Vegas power ranking goes to the Armed Forces Bowl or some bowl farther west.
-
You absolutely cannot do this! Let him coach lame duck if he wants to. Giving him more money just because the AD left and "pleading poverty" will make me go to 2023 TCU & SMU games as a UNT Alum. 🤮.
-
No you are looking at it all wrong. You need to give the program more money to make bigger and worse contract decisions. 🤣Maybe if they had let Seth walk when he came looking for a second extension they would have a cheaper better football coach today and more budget reserve to pay Grant. We already probably get the worse bang for the buck among FBS programs in Texas and bordering states...... So let's overpay the next coach by an even higher percentage and fall all over ourselves to give him raises as he keeps us around 0.500. I prefer finely aged quality manure, you ruffian. 🤣
-
EXACTLY we cannot enable this by attending a Seth coached Frisco Bowl. His third chance was the lost to Miami of Ohio, his fourth strike was the blowout loss this past Friday. If they could fire Dickey without giving him a chance to recover from health scare they can fire Seth now. Since Seth is such a nice guy I doubt that if he went 2-9 this year but beat SMU and had a heart attack he would absolutely be allowed to remain if still under contract. And to me that is utter BS!
-
Speak for yourself. They should have reconsidered buyout terms and this scenario BEFORE extending Seth for winning NOTHING a SECOND time. A small time program should not get itself in such a financial situation with NOTHING to show for it. ******************************************* We are THE JOKE FBS program in the state of Texas within a 3 hour driving raduis of DFW. ******************************************* Some of us were against that extension and came to games anyway when what we already knew started to be undeniable to the majority. Sorry I am not paying for their bad decision anymore. I will happily drive with someone if they provide me a free ticket or fund a current student going to the game. I know the between supporting and enabling. This is enabling! Scolding any fan that has went to more than the homecoming game every year is ridiculous as letting Seth coach 2022 and start a mediocre almost 30 QB all year. So let's call it even.
-
@rcade and @Cr1028 it is ridiculous to continue this debate. For us to even consider Art Briles there would have to be guaranteed success. And to warrant thr negative PR that guaranteed success would mean a sold out Apogee, a 2 loss season, and an appearance in the expanded playoff in 2024 or 2025. Would you guarantee that @Cr1028? Yes it is unfair to Art. But that's life. Art has plenty of money for a nice comfortable retirement and his children have good careers of their own. Kendall has a good job now and will probably get a better one in the near future. Maybe even here but not with Art as Head Coach.

Ask the leadership that question. You say "Mean Gree Family" but I liken it going to watch your neice or nephew sit on the bench and cheer with an idiot coach that won't give them earned playing time. They are not doing the best for the current crop of Mean Green Football players with Seth here. We are going to lose and lose badly. The band will sound great though.🤷🏾♂️
-
That make the conversation pointless to me. He definitely can't guarantee wins. And if he loses here it makes our program even worse.
-
Pro football with guaranteed revenue regardless of the morality or lack thereof is not remotely the same thing. , Cleveland's stadium is full today and will be for years to come REGARDLESS of what Watson did or does off the field. There are only 32 franchises in the NFL and their ONLY missions are winning and making money. A good QB has more direct impact on winning than a head coach. The Brown's NFL revenue share is guaranteed; no conference realignment, or weak NCAA swayed by the media that might take away scholarships and post season eligibility. It Sounds like you are more personally but hurt because your "football wizard" wasn't instantly welcomed by 90% of the fans on this board. I am 100% this man getting a second chance. But he is almost 70. This isn't quick fix and the program doesn't have a strong culture. I have NOTHING personally against Briles. I wouldn't want an All American 5 star QB transfer who beat 25 allegations of sexual assault at UNT either. 🙄
