  1. "North Texas' football program reached a new low over the weekend when head coach Dan McCarney was relieved of his duties following a historically bad loss to Portland State. The 66-7 loss was the worst loss an FBS program has suffered to an FCS opponent in NCAA history. The game was bad enough, even before it being UNT's homecoming game was factored in to the equation." 2. Check out Campus Insider's North Texas vs. Portland State prediction and game preview. At least someone has us picked to win something! Read article: http://campusinsiders.com/news/north-texas-vs-portland-state-prediction-game-preview-10-06-2015
  3. Yep. Saw the flag waving proudly over Rece's left shoulder. It was a little ways back, but it was definitely there. Thanks to Ben and Bill (I presume), for making this happen. Way to represent the Mean Green!
  4. From the NFL Roster Cuts Tracker on nfl.com: New Orleans Saints Cuts: Wr Nick Toon, CB Terrence Frederick, WR R.J. Harris, DT David Hunter, OT Antonio Johnson, WR Lance Lewis, G Cole Manhart, CB Travis Manning, DE Markus Pierce-Brewster, LB Chris Young, FB Erik Lorig, LB Ronald Powell, S Vinnie Sunseri It looks like the Antonio Johnson was officially released yesterday as the Saints trimmed their roster down to the required 75 players. Here's hoping that he finds another opportunity soon. On the bright side, it appears that Cyril Lemon and Derek Akunne still have a good chance to make their teams' final 53. You can see all of yesterday's "cut day" results here.
  5. Darnit! I completely overlooked that tidbit. I guess it is true then.
  6. Antonio Rico Johnson, a seven-year veteran defensive tackle, played college football at Mississippi State, and was released by the Patriots last Thursday. Although some reports have suggested that the Saints will be parting ways with our Antonio Johnson, I have yet to see that confirmed anywhere. In fact, according to The Times-Picayune's website, "The Saints have submitted their moves to the league office, but they likely won't be revealed until the transactions are posted at about 4 p.m." It's already half past four. Let's keep our fingers crossed for both our guys until the news becomes official.
  7. "Hurricane Katrina took away Cyril Lemon's home and separated him from some of his family and close friends. But it gave him a chance at a better life. That's why Lemon is back in New Orleans 10 years later, chasing an improbable dream as an undrafted rookie guard with the New Orleans Saints." 8. Have any Dentonites received a copy with their paper this morning? I don't have a subscription, but I've been to several different newsstands, and the football magazine has been mysteriously missing from each and every issue. I even called the newspaper to inquire, and they informed me that it is scheduled to be released tomorrow. Can anyone provide further information?
  9. Haha. No, I didn't see any Nike merchandise there. Unfortunately.
  10. The Denton Sam's Club at Rayzor Ranch has a large table full of North Texas merchandise for sale. I saw several different styles of golf shirts, zip-up jackets, and hooded sweatshirts that were all very reasonably priced. The entire display is set up near the front entrance. Right next to all the checkout lanes. You can't miss it.
  11. Congratulations, Mark!!
  12. Well?? What did you think? Good? Bad? Can you at least tell us when we can expect to see it?
  13. I went by the stadium store again today to get another helmet for a friend, and they were already sold out! That makes 40 mini and 10 full-size replica helmets sold in only a day and-a-half!! Maybe that's sufficient enough evidence to show university administration that there's demand enough for a worm to fly again in North Texas. Here's hoping that we see the "Flying Worm" on the field again very soon! P.S. The supervisor at the stadium store assured me that they've already ordered plenty more helmets, and that they should be arriving back on shelves as soon as next week.
  14. I've already posted this in another thread, but it's worth mentioning here also. The black/eagle full-size replica helmet is now available at the stadium store as well. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they're selling for around $120 there.
  15. They also have the black/eagle full-size replica helmet available now.
  16. Just stopped by the stadium store to pick up my own. I also inquired how many of each they had in stock. They ordered 10 of the full-size and 40 of the mini helmets. But, they've already sold a few and they were taking phone orders while I was there. I was told that they'd order more as needed, but you'd better hurry on in if you'd like to get one from the first batch!
  17. Great post @SilverEagle! I think your point about traditional rivalries also relates to another common element of college football rivalries, which is the geographical relationship between schools. In the earliest days of college football, the logistical difficulties associated with long distance travel confined most schools to play within a limited geographical region. During that time (and mostly prior to World War II), North Texas played East Texas State and Southwest Texas State, twenty-six and twenty-nine times each. It was only natural that we developed grudges against our most familiar opponents of that era. Later, when advancements in technology began to allow easier travel across larger distances, these "regional limitations" on football play naturally began to lessen. Then, one year after the NCAA first created divisions in 1956, North Texas joined the Missouri Valley Conference, began play at the University Division level, and left behind many of the traditional rivalries from their Lone Star Conference and Gulf Coast Conference days. That being said, It is my own personal opinion that there exists more than enough historical precedence for a legitimate in-state rivalry with SMU. And, if you go for the "border war" scenario created between schools in states adjacent to one another, why not rivalries with New Mexico State and Arkansas State? Each school has been our most frequent opponent since we began, and then re-began, play at the Division I level. If familiarity truly breeds contempt, then there's definitely a case for these three schools.
  18. You sir, are 100% correct. I didn't see the familiar center stripe at first glance, and thought they might be sporting a slightly different black helmet this year. But, after watching the video even more closely, I completely concur. They are the exact same helmets. Thanks for pointing that out!
  19. So, I've been thinking a lot about this. I believe the one thing that all great sports rivalries have in common is tradition. This is especially true in college football, where all of the best rivalries have been built upon decades-and-decades of history. Army and Navy have played 115 times since 1890. Michigan and Ohio State have played 110 times since 1897. Texas and Oklahoma have played 109 times since 1900. Notre Dame and USC have played 86 times since 1900. Alabama and Auburn have played 79 times since 1893. The list goes on. Following that line of thinking, I started to wonder if there was any basis for determining an historical rival for UNT. To that end I decided to list all of our opponents, from three significant time periods, and put them in order by total number of games played. Please click on the links below to review the results. Is there enough evidence to support any historic rivalries? UNT All-Time Results UNT Results 1957-Present UNT Results 1995-Present
  20. No, sorry. I didn't think to take a picture while I was in there. It's basically the full-size version of this helmet:
  21. Just wanted to let everyone know that Pro Image Sports in the Golden Triangle Mall now carries the Black "Son of Worm" Schutt AiR XP Full-Size Replica Football Helmet. Note: These are the same black helmets that debuted last year during the nationally televised game against Louisiana Tech, and not the brand new black helmets that were recently pictured during the unveiling event for this year's uniforms. They feature a tapered black center strip with repeating miniature eagles in gray. The replica helmets can be had for $130, and there is also an authentic version that can be special ordered for around $300. Just FYI.
