MGB: Dan McCarney presser notes with McNulty, Kirby video
MGNation92 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
His twitter infuriates me. I just want to reply to everything with "If you're so committed to winning then why don't we win more" or something along those lines. He just cheers on the team, says dumb inspirational crap about how losing is an opportunity to learn. He must be Stephen Hawking at this point with all the "learning" he's done in his career -
I only had experience with Rawlins and Smatresk as a student. It seems to me Smatresk is much more aware of what needs to happen for the University to be successful, including athletics. He is much more tuned in to what the student body wants as well. I have faith that he will make the correct changes to right the ship

A glaring stat that needs to be addressed
MGNation92 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
You're right. McCarney is too old school for his own good. I wish we could bring in a young offensive minded coach with a blitz happy defensive coordinator(look at what LA Tech did last year with Diaz at the helm) and tell them both to pin their ears back and try to embarrass everybody we play. The team plays too tight as it is, which consequently leads to mistake-laden football. Mac has such an iron grip on the team's culture that it will burn with him. I firmly believe Smatresk will make wholesale changes in the near future. I think he realizes its not 1972, we aren't the Nebraska Corhuskers, and Bob Devaney isn't our head coach. It is now 2015. The veer offense(although we don't run it, I'm sure Mac would run it if he could) as fun as it is to watch, is not successful anymore. We need an AD and coaching staff that will adapt its culture, make players want to come play here and take chances when necessary. -
@greenminer I do too. I really wish they would bring back the green helmets with the black SOW like when they first introduced the all black uniforms
-
at least the uniforms look alright. I hope they mix and match more this season. like green top with black pants/helmet. I understand we're green and white but the green against black just looks so much more striking. Anyways, I have a feeling that like the first two weeks, all of our "highlight" videos will be 75% defensive this season.

A glaring stat that needs to be addressed
MGNation92 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
It seems Cosh has adopted the Skladany mantra of having the corners play 15 yards off the line every down and distance. Making 5 yard slants, hitches, and screens the easiest guaranteed 10 yard throws a QB will have to make against us. That's what is so infuriating to me. We are so terrible on 3rd down because we will have the corners 5 yards behind the first down marker and hope they make a play. I understand playing off to allow the corner to step up and make the tackle, but if they miss that tackle, they are burned anyways. Might as well play man across the board and get burned. At least challenge the receivers every once and a while -
Just received my BBA in Decision Sciences from the COBA. I would argue Dr. Dake as being one of the most passionate, intelligent, and level headed professors on campus. He is top notch, and the program and staff overall are on the rise. I would argue the majority of the COBA is on the rise which makes the University well rounded. We've always had good liberal arts. Add in a top 100 business school(which I think is headed in that direction, we already have a top 10 program in Logistics) and it'll make us look even better.

This weekend I've been in Stillwater, OK visiting my girlfriend whom is in grad school there. Consequently this was my first OSU game and UTSA was the opponent. Bogenshutz played poorly, score went up to 24-7 in OSU's favor before half. THEY PULLED HIM AND PUT IN ANOTHER GUY. Then OSU went up 48-14, guess what Larry Coker did? The third string QB got work as well. Obviously I wasn't at the UNT game today but at one point I understand the score was 38-10 rice. Just watching this happen, then later coming to realize the events of today's UNT game it's sickening to think how incompetent our coaching staff is. Especially McCarney and Canales. Wonder why UTSA has beaten us every year since joining the conference? Coker plays to win. Coker plays for the future. We play for 2-10 every season and hope for better. Ridiculous

It's hard to win when the coaches in question try and minimize the opportunities to lose rather than maximize the opportunities to win. That's not to say that staying away from mistakes is a bad thing, but playing timid because of it certainly is, and more often than not leads to the downfall.

MGB weekly prediction: UNT will pull the stunner
MGNation92 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
He would need 3 games of 2 TD's with no picks to get his TD:Int ratio to 1:1 so yes. While it is entirely possible this could happen, it is also entirely improbable http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/515147/andrew-mcnulty -

Speaking of tweets: Speaking of tweets. I was tempted to reply to him and mention how the team "doesn't accept turnovers" either, yet he continuously fields a QB that has more career INT's than TD's. You only win the day if you put yourself in a position to win.

September 19 2015 - DaMarcus "Willie Beamen" Smith is thrust into the starting QB role of the 4th quarter and leads UNT football to CUSA dominance the next 2 seasons. Overall program perception and recruiting increases and within 10 years, UNT is invited to become a member of the Big 12 conference. Well. A guy can dream right?

This would imply we can sustain drives longer than 3 and out.

Official Rice Game Score Prediction Thread

This would imply that the QB would throw an average of 8.06 yards per completion. Lofty standards for McNulty/Greer -

Better yet. Let's predict the QB Statline (This is assuming we'll be playing catch up all game) 21/40 140 yds 1 TD and 2 INT's -

42-10 Rice If we score less than 10 by halftime I will be chanting for DaMarcus the rest of the game -
Much discussion has gone into the offense over the past few weeks, and while I am under the camp that Chico is not the problem, but rather McCarney's old school offensive BS, I do think that personnel(In this case, you guessed it, McNulty) also indicates the level in which Chico is allowed to operate the offense he wants to. For instance: A few things noticed here: Most plays came out of the shotgun or pistol(allowing more time to make reads/throws) Dajon is given the option to run based on what he sees the defensive end do(The concept of a read option) Dajon has the arm strength to make throws outside the numbers safely The box isn't stacked every single down Dajon often looks to drive the ball down field rather than take the 2 yard dump off(although admittedly some plays were done with the dump off designed) QB Stats for the above game 18/34 205 yds 3 TD's 2 INT's QB Stats for the smu game 16/34 128 yds 2 INT's I think the problem here is that the offense is A) Forced by McCarney to play conservative as hell B) Play to McNulty's lack of strengths. It is interesting that we "dumbed" the playbook down for Dajon while relying on his ability to run and his arm strength yet we were, for the most part, more productive offensively. Not to say that Dajon was the answer, because he obviously wasn't in the end(too many turnovers, even though McNulty makes just as many), but I would much rather have a QB and a system that allow that QB's strengths to flourish. Given the right personnel, I think the offense would look much more similar to the one above rather than the one we trotted out against smu. I don't think Canales is the problem, I think once Mac gave up and started Dajon it allowed Canales to "dumb down"(more like open up) the playbook because he had a QB with arm strength to make those throws that McNulty can't. The coaches know what they have in McNulty, we know what they have in McNulty. It's time to "dumb down" the playbook for our 4-star QB or physically talented RS Freshman QB and let the offense flourish again. Knee-Jerk Reaction/Analysis/Dead horse beating done

This might have been the most frustrating thing to watch at the game. He is no speed demon, but could have easily gained good yardage/first downs/even touchdowns if he would've kept the ball on a handful of such occasions. He had wide open run lanes where the end crashed for a few of them
-
He is their stud running back. One of the most underrated in the country in my opinion. Hell of a ball player We might actually have a shot against them this year....

I started attending UNT in spring of 2013, first season of Mean Green football I saw was 2013, which by all accounts was one of our best seasons ever as a program. Since then I have become a diehard fan of the program and as of August 2015 I am an Alumni of the school, but after reading this bio and seeing what I saw on saturday, it is becoming increasingly more apparent as why this program has long been the joke of the college football world. I love my school and will support it until the end, but I see no reason to pour money into a dumpster fire of a program until something improves. It is incredible to see the athletic gift that has been dropped in our backyard go to utter and complete waste. Smith is arguably the best QB recruit we've had since ever(at least by my understanding of the history of the program) and yet we continually field a product that, by all accounts, hit his ceiling 3 years ago. I am more and more joining the belief that Mac plays to not lose every game, rather than win every game. I now understand the disdain for RV as he has also displayed the same attitude of hiring to not lose, rather than to try and win anything. I look forward to the day that(maybe, but probably not) DaMarcus Smith gets to showcase his talents and as Carlos Harris so eloquently put "work with the talents God gave him" because it sure as hell is more talent than the current garbage we have to witness week in and week out.

Staying on a positive note I think this video highlights more than just the positive plays. It highlights McNulty's strengths. In particular about the only one he has. When he's throwing in the middle of the field, slants, seams, etc. he looks infinitely more productive than when trying to throw outside the numbers. If we are truly going to ride this dumpster fire QB situation all the way to 2-10, might as well play to his strengths and throw in between the hash marks 8 times out of 10. Just my two cents
-
As stated in other topics, I would be genuinely interested if this were brought up at the open mic for the coaches show. Mac needs to be held accountable about how abysmal the offense has been under his regime. I can only imagine what kind of numbers we would be putting up with the receiving corps we have and an Air Raid type offense with DaMarcus Smith at the helm.

"McNulty had a tough day, throwing for 128 yards on 34 attempts with a couple of interceptions while constantly being blitzed." Given McCarney's archaic offensive philosophy I would blitz us every down. No defense in the nation will respect McNulty's ability to burn them with a pass because he simply can't. smoo, along with every other team on our schedule knows/knew this, and is going to make our team, players, and coaching staff look like absolute fools every time we have the ball
