  1. Its still early for me to make a prediction, I think a lot depends on the UTEP game, if they loose that game then I dont see them winning against UNLV, and 6 wins probably wont happen. Also if they get out to a 1-5 or 2-4 start then I think they start looking for a new coach in early October, although I do not see SL being fired mid season in that scenario (they will just let his contract expire).
  2. Big12 sports is already well established in the DFW market, at this point its probably the Big12's number 1 market. Other then that, SMU is not going to bring anything to the Big12 that they dont already have, nor will they bring a ton of revenue.
  3. I got UNLV ahead of UTEP, both very winnable, but if those both go wrong then I dont see this team recovering. This season is a little different, half the season will be done on October 1st... 4 of the first 6 games are against current or future conference opponents, at that point we will know if the program is on the right track.
  4. Its all about timing, media deals expire at different times, and no one is really sure what the value is of each conference is with out TX/OU/USC/UCLA.
  5. when looking at the rest of the schedule, this is one of the easier games in the front 6, and its a conference game. Its huge!
  6. It is well organized, I'll give them that.
  7. I would think the PAC would be interested in Texas Tech or OSU more so then anyone else out of the region. What is the Big12 with out Texas and OU? its certainly not a conference on the same level as the SEC or Big10, and they are not going to generate the same revenue as they did in the past with TX/OU, the PAC might be a better option for Tech and OSU.
  8. Right now if you stack SMU, TCU, and UNT up against each other as to which school is most embraceable, its probably SMU. SMU's games are always highlighted on all the local news broadcasts, more mentions on local radio, and every sports bar in DFW has SMU on their TV list. TCU does better in TV because of who they are playing. UNT with the population we have in the DFW area should dominate a school like SMU in the TV market, but its hard to do that when UNT can't even make the TV list at most sports bars in the area!
  9. Same problem every year, UNT does not even try to promote a fan base in DFW... Money is great, but UNT has the larger alumni population int DFW, there is no reason that UNT should not kill SMU in local TV ratings every week. There is no reason for UNT games not to be on at every major sports bar in DFW (especially the ones that are popular with college football). All it takes is hustle!
  10. You cant make any money with a baseball stadium, large area, massive upkeep, only time it generates any revenue is fans buying tickets. A rink can be utilized 18 hours a day maybe more, so when its not being used by the hockey team or university programs, people and organizations are paying to use it. Cost to build it could easily be offset with a grant from USA hockey, they would love to see NCAA hockey in Texas. All the major suburbs around Dallas have rinks, its only a matter of time before they build one in Denton anyway, why not let the university capitalize on that?
  11. You wouldnt be able to make any money if it isn't a full time ice rink. most of the rinks in the dfw area are being utilized 18 hours a day. With the way the population is growing in Denton county, its just a matter of time before they build a rink up there anyway, you would think the school would like to capitalize on that.
  12. NBA teams are only allowed two 2-way players, Memphis already has a solid roster, so its still hard to say where he will end up. And lets not get ahead of ourselves, this is summer league and these are not real NBA rosters, only a few of these players will actually ever play in the association.
  13. The rink itself could make money, there is enough demand for ice time in the area. would travel really be any different compared to other university sports?
  14. As somone that has played hockey my whole life I can say that the DFW area has actually become one of the better regions for hockey development. We have quite a few quality rinks, lots of national and international tournaments are held here, and some very good youth development clubs. A lot of kids have been drafted into the CHL (major jr hockey) which is the pathway most take to the NHL. I think the school could make it work, sure they would need a rink, however the demand for ice is still high in dfw so they could probably make money with it, in addition to adding other wither sports programs (figure skating and curling)
  15. he had a great night, he is definitely built for the NBA game, even Ja was impressed. At this point he should easily earn a 2way deal on somebody's roster
  16. What will TV even look like in 10 years? Cable TV is going away, everything seems to be moving to an app based viewing platform. ESPN/ABC does not need 6 different channels and 3 different streaming platforms, when a single streaming app can do it all. Eventually that is how it will be, all the schools with espn deals will be shown through a single app, same can be said for FOX, CBS, and NBC.
  17. Saw the game yesterday, he did look good on both sides of the ball, lets see how a few more games go. They play OKC with Chet Holmgren tonight should be worth watching.
  18. Less local competition, but they do get their brand out there... I have seen UTSA tshirts for sale at Walmart in Austin, I doubt you could find a UNT tshirt in Dallas. My point is, "Old Denton" does not seem eager to promote a fan base among the greater DFW area.
  19. I'll give UTSA some credit, they have an actual fan base in the San Antonio south Texas region. when you visit the area you will see UTSA stickers on cars and people wearing the schools merch all over the place. UNT has yet to develop a legit fan base in the greater DFW area.
  20. Saint Mary's will be a good team to play. Any chance that they might play a return game @ UNT in 2023??
  21. No decision to fire him, he is going to finish his contract, but if the results are poor then he is not getting a new one. The first six games include 2 conference games, 2 future conference games, and 2 out of conference games that are winnable. That, combined with previous seasons is enough to make an assessment about his future.
  22. I didnt say fire him mid season... Simply, after game 6 the school should know if they want to bring him back for the following season, if not start looking for a replacement. Most importantly, have a coach and staff in place for the following season when recruiting begins, and players will start looking to move as soon as their current season is over.
  23. I dont think you can wait until December to fire a head coach because the program would be to far behind in the recruiting and transfer market. I think he has the first 6 games to make a case for his future.
  24. the G-league is the official minor league of the NBA (used to be called the D League) Two-way contracts means they can move between G-league and the NBA G-league Ignite is more of a developmental program to get players ready for pro ball, sort of an alternative to college ball.
