I do plan on posting to you after the game. Give me a few days to get back to the sticks, will ya?

OK. I am ready to toss it down. We catch some breaks early as the Eagles are caught staring at our cheerleaders, and then again, they are distracted in the second half as our rah-rah's toss out freshly baked spuds to the UNT student body. These distractions, and the tough play of a revamped Vandal squad, that surprisingly shows no fatigue to the 101 temp and high humidity (Petrino's greenhouse practice hut worked) --- slips by with a thrilling win. 35-33. The student body marches to campus with baked spuds that are steaming hot and waiting for the Texas butter and sour cream.

Brian Murphy Idaho Sportwriter expects Vandal turnaround
joeyvee replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, that would be progress, after two years of malfeasance by a staff. We are at, or near rock bottom. Have you ever been there? Hint --- not too long ago according to the history books, my friend. I like this board and UNT, but my Lord, after what you guys are crawling out of, a few of you sure think you're the cat's meow for dominance and Ws. We will show up. We will put forth a good effort, I am sure. It will be worth your time houstonmeangreen, but you may have to hang around for most of the game. Here's to an injury free game and a contest that hones both teams for the next contest. -
Vegas lines for UNT Idaho game as of 8.25.13

The WR who transferred out will be missed, that is for sure. Mention of losing a QB at the top of this page. He was booted near the end of the season for off field issues. RBs -- got plenty. Leading tacklers? Geezus, what he has brought in easily replaced them with better skill, speed and attitude. A RSF QB is starting. It is quite a bit different than a true frosh kid. Heat? Oh yeah, I know and so does Petrino what that is going to be like. Humidity is biggest factor and I am not sure what that will be like Saturday. My niece is in Irving, and has been there for six years. She is an Idaho native. Told me the other day, the humidity has not been as bad as other years. But of course, she is used to it now. Hey, we do have heat up here in the summer. It is in the 90's. The Palouse can bake too in August. I guess we should punt and save the equipment. LOL. See you guys soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BillySee58 said: You guys are coming off a 1-11 season(Correct. That unraveled quickly. HC fired.) , you lost your leading receiver(Will be missed, for sure), rusher(not a factor), qb(Oh, please. Glad he is gone. Horrible off field issues.), and your top 7 tacklers(replaced with far better JC players) from your defense. And you're breaking in a(RSF) freshman qb playing 2,000 miles from home(we are on the road a lot), as well as plenty of new starters(thank God we got them) particularly on defense. -

Oh, no problem. That was a FCS win. But, your 2011 team was a surprise to many. Very similar with what Mac did and what Petrino has done. Often those first year total remodel jobs are a shocker, especially early. Idaho and 15 or the Eagles and minus 15? Think it over. -

I added comments and fixed a few things. Question. In 2011, the first year for Mac as your HC did you win a few? Did you surprise a few? Did you have new players in the program? Was it a whole new culture? Were others saying before the kick off of the 2011 season the same things you and others are now saying about a new HC, new players (big infusion of JC guys) and new attitude that is planted in Moscow? Just say'n. I believe you need to think before you plunk it down, my friend. -
Meangreener: "This game, the Idaho game, is gigantic. Huge 100 year celebration, chance to start off with a blowout" We are all praying your team, like this poster, enters with this attitude. Please. Please, keep thinking we are going to be a your celebratory sacrifice (beeech) to the 100th year of UNT football. This. We want this. Petrino loves this.

Very nice, the spud and state. The story is that the panhandle part would have been wider, but surveyors followed another ridge line of the rugged Bitterroots back in the 1880s. I enjoy this board. I want to see improvement in our team. I truly believe Petrino has elevated the quality of play. I hope all us see good football from two programs that are meeting for the tenth time? (UNT 5-4 in series? It may be 4-3?) Enjoy the weekend. Be there on Thursday.

That Mock Game was not like the two scrims we had where it was 1's vs 1's. Scout team was the defense here, so I believe this whole Mock Game plan was to run through things and get team on field and organized as to bench/sideline set up, coaches in box, coaches on side line, etc. Yeah, the D looked lethargic --- it was the frosh Scout Team. I would call it not much over a "walk through", but with pads and through the tackle, to the whistle.
-
No, he was offered, along with the WR on the team. Both are RSF now and appear to be on the verge to see action at the FBS level. BSU sniffed. Offered a "walk on" and I heard FCS Montana was real interested. We got lucky and got two good kids. Why no other FBS pursuit? I am guessing he probably appeared thin (scrawny to some) and may have not had a cannon arm. I watched his junior and senior years. I always left the games very impressed with all phases. His team mate, the big WR, is quite athletic. I really thought he would go basketball D-1 somewhere.

Idaho Coach won't name QB starter till game day
joeyvee replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
What year is the Berglund kid? I have read about Thompson and Williams, but Berglund? Are there more QBs in your nest besides these three? Potato psych out is quite effective. I has begun and will surface soon. LOL. Have a great weekend.- 10 replies

RSF Chad Chalich high school career for two seasons (2010 and 2011). 23-1 in starts. State Champs 2010 and 2011. POY in 2010 and 2011 large school classification. Link to career stats: http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/chad-chalich/bGwNwPTtEeKZ5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/football-stats.htm- 10 replies

Petrino seems to like what the RFr does with what he calls, "the read option" out of the shotgun. Chalich was State player of the year two years in a row (2010-11). Idaho is not a populated state, but his high school (Coeur d' Alene) is the largest classification and they are aggressive in out of state games with California and Washington big name programs. Chalich attended BSU camps and did not get an offer, other than what would be called a Coach Petersen "invite to walk on". FCS Montana was after him, but I can't recall any other FBS programs. He is fun to watch. Moves well. Sees the field well. Can take a hit. 23-1 in starts in high school. The JC guy is a pure scrambler and came in this summer. He may just be behind in the offense "know how" at this point. The senior, has a bigger frame 6-2 or 3 (Chalich 6-0), has FBS game experience --- but may be slower on reads and field vision. The true frosh kid out of Michigan is son of NFL Coach Scott Linehan (a former Vandal QB great). I have heard good things about the son, Matt. But I believe he is heading to a redshirt.- 10 replies

Over 100 years & Vandals-Eagles share stuff
joeyvee replied to joeyvee's topic in Mean Green Football
I went back and corrected the year of our game with Texas --- it was 1949, not 1946. Sorry. Game tied at half-time. Final though was Coach Cherry's Longhorns 56, the Vandals 7. Ouch. We, and Montana, were in the Pacific Coast Conference until it "realigned" in the late 1950's ---- essentially, tossing out two schools. Hmmmmmmmm, can you guess who got the boot? In basketball, the Vandals-Griz would travel as "partners" and while in LA, one would play UCLA, the other USC. They would switch the next night. In 1925, the USC football team traveled to Moscow and played. There is old video available on this game at several google sites. The Trojans only venture into the panhandle of Idaho for football. -

Idaho HB, John Brogan, in action in the 1949 game vs. Texas. We were in the PCC then, with the big boys. -

UI started its grid play in 1900 with close neighbor WSU. UNT started in 1913. Both have had struggles in the past years with total wins and both have recent in-season firings of their head coaches. UNT moved Mike Canales (he was talked about in Dec. as a candidate for the UI job) into the HC with two games left of the 2010 season. UI, last season, moved Jason Gesser in as HC with four games left. Both programs have notable HCs who have found that win column. UNT has St. Clair, Sisco, Fouts, Mitchell and Fry. UI has Erickson, John L Smith and Keith Gilbertson. UNT's strong winning percentages came early, and into the 70's; UI's started in '82 with Dennis Erickson and the last 30 years has netted 186. The UNT-Idaho series is about even, but the Eagles have a one game edge. Both programs have had notable NFL players. Let's have fun in kicking off the 2013 season with two proud fan bases with 100 plus years of good 'ol college football. Here's to an injury free game and lots of memories.

It is going to be here soon. Can't wait to see the campus and that new stadium. I believe Petrino will bring in a well prepared and conditioned team. I think you ought not visualize the last two year's group touching down next Friday. Totally different team. It will be good getting both teams with a game under their belts where we can feel what we have and what we don't have. Vandals-Eagles . . .ooorah.
-
Poor froggy --- I have a question about team benches. MeanGreen on west in front of their students? Idaho over on the west side? We are in sections125 and 124 with the UNT students. That is OK, but just wondering about the teams. Thanks.

Receivers covered in local news article (Friday 8-16): vandals receivers stretch the field new faces should provide spark Dean Hare/Daily News Idaho wide receiver Deon Watson (83) catches a touchdown pass after getting behind cornerback Armond Hawkins (14) during the Vandals’ Saturday scrimmage at the SprinTurf in Moscow. Wherever he has gone, Idaho football coach Paul Petrino has been able to turn average receivers into big-time playmakers, so it's no surprise that the Idaho Vandals have high expectations from their wideouts. "Petrino has a lot of knowledge for us, and personally, he's taken my game to another level," Idaho senior receiver Najee Lovett said. "He notices all the little details when you're running your routes and catching the ball. I know he's helped all of us receivers." Lovett is one of only three receivers returning from last year's squad. In the 2012 campaign, he reeled in 50 receptions for 548 yards and six touchdowns. The other two returners, senior Roman Runner and sophomore Marquan Major, tallied a combined 20 catches. "Najee has to be a playmaker for us," offensive coordinator Kris Cinkovich said. "He's had a few big strikes each of the past few practices. He has to be a fast guy and a deep strike guy for us." Runner drew praise from Petrino for his play during the spring and is still getting a lot of playing time with the first string offense. However, Petrino has decided Runner will also play on the defensive side of the ball as a cornerback, which will likely limit his playing time as a receiver. "We're going to do it, it might just be a nickel package, it might just be during certain things," Petrino said. "When you go punt and punt return with the gunners and the guys holding them up, Roman is the best press guy we have, so we have to get him over there and have him play some corner for us." While the Vandals' other receivers won't play defense, they will need to learn to be versatile as well, as receivers in Petrino's offense often play all three traditional positions - X, Y and Z - which helps the offense create potential mismatches. "All of us receivers are going to be all over the field," Lovett said. "There aren't any set spots we're going to playing. You get a good feel for the offense that way, you get to catch balls everywhere." If Chad Chalich wins the starting quarterback job, he will once again be tossing passes to Deon Watson. The two played in high school together at Coeur d'Alene and seem to have good chemistry. The 6-foot-4 Watson, a redshirt freshman, has done an outstanding job using his size to his advantage this fall and appears to have himself locked in near the top of the depth chart. "Deon has been really good at making plays," Cinkovich said. "He's not fast, not speedy or spectacular, but he always competes for the ball and uses his body very well - plus he has very good hands." In Idaho's first scrimmage, Watson reeled in five catches and scored a pair of touchdowns while appearing to have a solid grasp of the offense. "Deon is figuring out how to use his body and has great hands," Lovett said. "I think he's going to have a good year." Perhaps the most dynamic player on the receiving corps is Dezmon Epps. The 5-foot-10 junior college transfer is easily one of the fastest guys on the field. "I've been clocked at 4.3 (seconds in the 40-yard dash)," Epps said. "I'm off and on with a low 4.3, might run a 4.4 on an off day." Epps has been with the team for only about two weeks, but already he has stepped up as a vocal leader and a playmaker. During Saturday's scrimmage, he caught 10 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns. "Dezmon leads our catch chart most days after practice, which is an indicator that, A: he makes plays, and B: the quarterbacks trust him," Cinkovich said. "He flies around and is fast. He's a dynamic playmaker." Cinkovich said Epps will serve as solid replacement for departed senior Jahrie Level, who appeared to be Idaho's No. 1 receiver coming out of spring ball before transferring to another school during the summer. The offensive coordinator also mentioned freshmen Jacob Sannon and Rueben Mwehla as players whose speed could net them some playing time this year. For tight ends, Mike LaGrone returns for his senior season with the Vandals. The 6-foot-2 tight end started nine games last year and scored a pair of touchdowns on 16 receptions. While it would appear he sits atop the depth chart, his grip on the spot is tenuous at best. "Mike missed some time again with an injury, but Clayton Hommie is always there, always stepping up, never hurt, always making plays," Cinkovich said. "He's not spectacular because he's not real fast, but he does what he's coached to do. For us, you have to be at practice every day to be a playmaker and a leader. Mike certainly has potential to be a leader, but it's performance that counts." If this year's receivers and tight ends can come together, they should prove to be a much more effective group than the one that consistently struggled last year. "I think this year we're going to be good at stretching the field and making big plays," Lovett said. "We're going to be making guys miss and catching balls down the field. I think this offense is well suited for that." loud and proud alla y'all...loud and proud

I google-earth the Denton area. Nice. Hovered over both stadiums and the campus. So, what is the quick history on Fouts? How is it used, seating capacity, etc. Thanks. Your new one is awesome.
