MGB: UNT considering forming hiring committee for new coach
greenit replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I definitely do not see this as a positive development for RV's chances of sticking around. It is possible this was his idea in order to take pressure of of himself, but I think it is more likely the idea originated above his pay grade, essentially taking the decision our of his hands. -

Watching now. This is essentially a staff appreciation/awards lunch. So far, no sign of RV. Shocked, not shocked. -

I turned down MIT in favor of UNT. MIT's football team sucked at the time.- 94 replies

If they have competent leadership, they know they can't let UNT gather all the buzz this offseason while they are mired in mediocrity at the moment.

I wish Smastresk could somehow manage to go big time at AD. Get someone with a big name with big time connections. Someone like a Mack Brown (insert other name as appropriate) as AD. Give him an incentive laden contract tied to MGC and ticket sales that allows him to make big time $'s if he builds this thing up. Stop thinking small time. Get creative. Hire an AD like that, along with a up and coming coordinator, it should get the ball rolling. Once the buzz starts, recruits will follow. Once the recruits are here winning starts. Once winning starts all boats will rise and you can start affording to pay for proven commodities at coach and not buy potential. Do you think Mack Brown, with his connections, could pull in more money than RV? Mack would more than pay for himself with the donations and extra notoriety it would bring. Maybe a $500k per plus incentives? Maybe a million per plus incentives? I have no idea of the guaranteed money it would take to get him here, but once he is here leverage his connections and influence. If within a couple of years we were selling out Apogee every game and talking of expansion, kids viewing UNT as a destination and not a backup, wouldn't it be worth it? Think big and get creative.

MGB: Sounds like Smith is going to get his shot
greenit replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
IMO, the biggest root cause of this fiasco is the lack of a QB to step in to replace Thompson in 2014. That began our downward spiral which culminated in Mac putting his family friend in the role. The team was willing to trust their coach and see what he had, but when it became apparent that he was not the guy AND the coach refused to make a change, the team lost faith in their coach because they knew he was not being honest with them. Trust was broken. We all saw the final result on Saturday after 2 or 3 three and outs on offense. The defense flat out quit, followed shortly thereafter by the rest of the team. -
Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham UNT job mention on Fox

Damn Sonny. That is a rode hard and put up wet 34. -
Please don't expect people around here to actually read before responding. It's fly off the handle week at GMG.com.

No question in my mind that Neinas & co were trying to offer the AD a safe choice by going with the Fry coaching tree knowing that it would play to the alumni, especially the Fry generation alumni. It seemed to work. The first year was seen as great progress. The second year raised a few red flags that were quickly forgotten after the bowl win. And then the shit hit the fan.

I was planning to be there regardless. Now I am actually intrigued.

Cross and Fran, if true, seem to be perfect examples of the consultant trying to show how much smarter they are than everyone else.
-
Of course they are interested. They see all the things that have been built, the conference, the decent money, and the location. What is not to like. It is like the female that thinks they can 'change him'. And this is great news for us. I am saying we don't need someone like Neinas. I don't mind the consultant. I agree that they can get around the contact with coaches under contracts that ADs cannot and they are professional recruiters and ADs are not. Just get someone that is current that can present us a list that includes the most eligible blonde, brunette, and redhead so that hopefully the AD cannot screw up the choice and the eventual coach does not suck at his job. To be fair, Benford fooled a lot of people. He was considered the best option available in our price range with big upside. I don't believe most 'experts' consider Cross to have the upside that Benford did at the time. Unfortunately, expert opinions can sometimes turn out to be crap. We seem adept at finding those kind of experts.

Chuck Neinas seems to be a favorite go to resource for ADs around the country looking to pass the buck. Chuck is 80+ years old. Please do not let him select our next coach for RV. He thought McCarney ran a snazzy modern offense.

Would you like to play football for UNT? Would you like to play football for UNT? -
We need to get that football salary up to $750k to attract the big names. If hoops gets up to $500k along with football, there is absolutely no reason we can't attract the right kind of coaches and grow their salaries as they grow the programs. We are finally getting into competitive areas.

Anyone catch the comment regarding different QB's strengths? He was responding to a question regarding opening up and throwing more downfield. He mentioned that they try to leverage each of the QBs strengths when they are in the game. Greer has his strengths, Smith can move in the pocket and open up the field, and he mentioned McNulty's strength as XXXX. I missed it. Something about RSO or something. I assumed he was referencing something that meant short passing game or timing or something but did not catch it. -
How many P5 jobs do you think are available for the triple option offense? I can think of 1, Georgia Tech, but am having trouble thinking of another.

He has played. Maybe even caught one or two passes. Not much impact so far. Hopefully, all the receivers are about to get some opportunity to show what they can do.
