  1. SMU is aiming high per their AD. Why would you interview a dude like Fran who bolts for the best money (proven by his history)? Is aiming high, Dennis Franchione? In this day of salaries, their is no loyalty. Even if Fran does well, who is going to sustain after he leaves? (back at square one again) Go SMU hire Fran. 07:35 AM CST on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News khairopoulos@dallasnews.com SMU and former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione have been in contact regarding the school's open football coaching job, and Franchione has shown interest, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. SMU has declined to comment on candidates while the search is ongoing. The school has been looking for a coach since firing Phil Bennett on Oct. 28 and has reportedly interviewed former Miami coach Larry Coker. Franchione has been out of work since resigning from A&M following a win over rival Texas on Nov. 23. His tenure in College Station was rocky. ERICH SCHLEGEL / DMN Dennis Franchione stepped down as head football coach at Texas A&M on Nov. 23. He had a 32-28 record in five seasons, and his final season was marked by a fiasco involving a secret e-mail newsletter that sold insider information about the Aggies. A&M athletic director Bill Byrne wrote a letter of admonishment for Franchione's personnel file that stated the e-mails violated NCAA rules. Franchione's settlement with A&M guarantees the coach $1.7 million from the school during the 2008 season. He will make another $1.7 million in 2009, though A&M will owe only the difference between the total and Franchione's salary, if he is working. The same holds true with a $1 million total in 2010. If SMU hires Franchione, it would certainly add fire to the school's rivalry with TCU. Franchione helped turn around the long-struggling private school, going 25-10 from 1998 to 2000, before leaving for Alabama. He started TCU's ongoing streak of playing in nine bowl games in the last 10 seasons. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini has said that he wants a proven coach and that he is aiming high. Orsini has insisted that he has been pleased with the search process, despite its duration. Former Navy coach Paul Johnson interviewed at SMU two weeks ago before taking the Georgia Tech job days later
  2. That is a butt load of miles in the WAC. Of course, Hawaii has a lot to do with that.
  3. It is a long way from signing day but that is a good looking athlete. Hopefully, Cook does not get swayed by his other visits. Not all are swayed by better facilities or a better conference. UNT had several prospects last season that had those opportunities but chose TD and his success in high school over what could be considered a better program by Rivals or any other recruiting board.
  4. All b.s. aside, Rick is the man, putting himself in those situations.
  5. It can be done (if that is what TD wants to do) Briles keeps a good coach but moves him to LB's coach. By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News Baylor coach Art Briles announced the hiring of five more assistant coaches and a new strength coach Wednesday. Randy Clements and Phillip Montgomery will be co-offensive coordinators. The two have been with Briles since his days as a high school coach at Stephenville. Penn State safeties coach Brian Norwood had already been named the defensive coordinator. Briles' son, Kendall, will be the Bears' secondary coach. Larry Hoefer, Baylor's previous defensive coordinator, remains the linebackers coach. Briles has three more positions available, but he said three coaches have already agreed to come after the bowl season. South Florida strength coach Kaz Kazadi will also join the Bears in a similar capacity.
  6. Emmitt, just for clarification, when you speak of top of the food chain, your referring to TD then?
  7. 1) Please mix in some freakin Cover 2 and Cover 4 with our almightly, base cover 1 package. 2) A punt returner 3) Kick off return average that nets us (at least) at the 20 yard line 4) A true kick off man (nothing personal, we just need a better leg and better hang time) the list keeps going but I don't want to be greedy.
  8. Just having my name mentioned with the legend is so overwhelming. I have conceded with rock, paper, scissors. Actually I threw in the white towel along time ago, Happy Holidays Rick.
  9. HONORABLE MENTION OFFENSE: LINEMEN: Julio Bustillos, Muleshoe; Daniel Hanson, Lone Oak, Derek Hayes, Teague; Kaleb Hopson, Early; Jason Horn, Corsicana Mildred; Dillon Jackson, Elysian Fields; Jacob Lively, Hooks; Terry McDaniel, New Diana; Logan Merhinger, Teague; Jonathan Salinas, Littlefield; Michael Thompson, Farmersville; Ty Warnasch, Stockdale; Joe Wells, Cisco ENDS/RECEIVERS: Chance Blackmon, Tatum; Desmond Brigham, Caddo Mills; Cody Bullard, Early; Tyler Esparza, Crane; Steven Hobratschk, Littlefield; Landrey Lemons, Holliday; Ryan Morgan, Melissa; Stoney Patton, Scurry-Rosser
  10. The coaching carousel is crazy. Never say never. TD might be the 4th or 5th on their list but he might be the only guy on the list that says yes. If he would not have gone 2-10, he might have been higher on the list. It will be a relief when SMU annouces another candidate.
  11. That scenario would be devestating for UNT. Dodge would have the stadium and all the facilities done and in his hip pocket. If that deal goes through, it would be a dagger. Every verbal recruit would second guess themselves and the crap would start hitting the fan.
  12. Hey Lonnie, The wishbone was a gimmick but won many a game. What about the wing T? Hell, Liberty Hill wins state every year with the wing T. I guess UNT will just have to be ashamed of the gimmicky system that Dodge uses. TD is going to shake that spread up this season, imo. Playbook is going to get a little thick this off season.
  13. Big Troy, your uniform is waiting for you over at the villlage. Come on over this spring and lets get rolling. You and Tune can bring the infectious Celina winning mind set that many of the younger recruits are bringing with them. We need the state title boys to keep on coming. A winning mind set is contagious.
  14. Biggest surprise was TCU and how inept they were on offense and overall team play. I'll take Dodge's spread any day over watching TCU offensive football.
  15. Casey, congratulations. Your an inspiration to many people. Hopefully all the young WR's will follow you lead and work their butts off to obtain what you have earned.
  16. All the best to Riley with his surgery and speedy recovery. The #11 jersey will be waiting for you.
  17. If Paul Johnson does get the job, the interesting question is whether he sticks to what SMU has been running (spread with some TE and two back) or does he go to the triple option and pound the rock???
  18. You never say never, especially in the coaching business. Sure seems a younger, more dynamic college coordinator would be better for Couger High. If I am an AD, I would put in a significant buyout clause with every head coach hire in this day of collegiate sports. Otherwise, you have guys like Graham leaving Rice after one season, to move to another team in the same conference.
  19. Maybe DM makes a huge push in the spring and kicks the hell out of the 2006 4A and 5A players of the year? I know...I know... get off the board. Why not fire it up now, before spring ball starts, why wait? In all seriousness, competition is going to be extremely healthy at every position. I know one SURE starter and his name is Casey Fitzgerald. Other than that, its like are 2007 slogan......"its wide open."
  20. I believe the bottom ranked 40 teams could have lost to anyone, anytime in that same group of 40.
  21. Quote/ Why Would A Recruit Come To Unt? To get immediate playing time and to be close to home for those who live in the Metroplex. All others must have their own personal agenda: ties to UNT, ties to SLC and coach Dodge and staff, or the Dodge mystique that is still strong in Texas High school football. Of course those kids who get only one offer to play D-1, decide on UNT or playing AA ball.
  22. Would Dodge be gone if he went 6 and 6 and if the Defense would have been at the top of its game?
  23. Interesting that out of 12 verbal commits for Texas Tech for 2008, that 5 our JC recruits. UNT must get five or 6 impact players on defense out of JC or HS that are ready to go. That will be a tough task. Not sure what are connections to the JC coaching pipeline will be?
  24. Meager, Vizza and Dodge shore up our QB situation. The ultimate competitor will come out and we'll ride the particular horse who comes out on top. The QB position is wide open. WR's, we have a lot of depth, not sure about how much speed. Other than Fitz, no one is safe at starting at WR. Speed rules. In the spread, you must get seperation when you get press coverage. Not sure we really have the speed to be a Hawaii, Tech, etc. (throw first mentality) UNT must be able to run the ball giving Dodge that opportunity to get open receivers. Missouri runs the ball so effectively that Chase Daniel has so many easy completion opportunites and is not sitting on his back most of the game. Dodge will use his "Jumbo" package more and more for balance and for maximum blitz protection against the teams with more team speed on defense. OL is coming back, Red shirt and others will compete. We must be more physical up front. We have to be smarter and be able to pound the ball when needed. We need another RB, someone who can take it to the house and hits the hole. Micah is a great possession back. Now we need the speed back who can go the distance but who will also get up in the hole, imo. Defense and specialty teams would take all day to cover. And my opinions suck, so I'll punt it to the experts. (and hopefully, not get it blocked)
  25. Riley will start next season and Vizza will be a proven player who will get some minutes. No way TD sits Riley one or two seasons.
