  1. Not according to the "gospel" of Rick (who has made it very clear, I believe 3 times nows) He says its the DC. I say its more than that.
  2. Also lets not forget that Texas Stadium is owned by the City of Irving and that the new Jerry World is being fund in part by the 1/2 cent sales tax increase. City of Arlington is giving Jerry $325 million. Why can't our county give amateur athletics some money? Make the stadium multi purpose so the citizens of Denton and the County feel like its owned by them. Make UNT do the upkeep and bring some cash to the table as well.
  3. Combinations of increased sales tax and motel/motel/car rental tax add up to big bucks in a hurry. Country Commissioners make this kind of deal happen along with a strong city mayor who backs athletics. RV would be a legend if he could pull this off like UTSA is trying to do.
  4. My grammar mistakes always got me in trouble, I should learn how important it is to (or is it too.......aw sh*t who cares) to slow down and correct my grammer mistakes before I post. My bad. You really think a DC is going to be the difference in whether or not SMU rises to the top 20 faster than UNT? I don't, it is much deeper than than, my fire fighting buddy. I could rattle off several other key factors but I would have too many spelling or grammar errors.
  5. June says the program is closer to turning it around than people think and will recruit heavily in a 30 mile radius. January 11, 2008 Jones Intrigued by rebuilding opportunity at SMU DAVID KOENIG Associated Press Writer Talk about it in the Message Boards June Jones To SMU Jones was lured by chance to rebuild SMU. He says there were only two college jobs of interest; SMU and Duke. By DAVID KOENIG Associated Press Writer DALLAS — Staying at Hawaii would have been the easy choice for June Jones. It was the challenge of rebuilding a tattered football program that led him to take the coaching job at Southern Methodist, which stumbled to a 1-11 record this season. "Where you are now excites me because the only way is up, and I am good at going up," Jones said Monday. The introduction of Jones at a booster-packed press conference ended the nation's longest college coaching search this year. It had been 70 days since Phil Bennett was dismissed with four games left in the season. School officials hope Jones can bring some of Hawaii's run-and-shoot magic, which produced 43 points per game, an undefeated regular season and a BCS bowl berth this year. They were also impressed by Jones' ability to resuscitate Hawaii, which went 0-12 before he arrived in 1999 and won nine games. Jones' decision to leave Hawaii came after an extraordinary bidding war that even involved the governor of Hawaii. Leigh Steinberg, Jones' agent, said the coach accepted a five-year deal worth about $2 million per year. He said Hawaii offered about $1.6 million per year. "In 30 years representing athletes, I've never seen the emotional reaction from a state like Hawaii," Steinberg said. "There was a flood of e-mails and calls exhorting him to stay." Besides more money, Jones will be in the middle of the rich Texas recruiting base, and he'll get better facilities. SMU recently built a new brick-faced stadium and a modern training center. "There's absolutely no comparison," Jones said. At Hawaii, "the office that I sat in was the same office that Dick Tomey used in 1986. The carpet was the same ... You're talking about the NFL and a Pop Warner team." A handful of SMU players met Jones after Monday's press conference. The coach said he had watched tape of some SMU games and the Mustangs were "close to turning the corner." But he declined to predict how many games they'll win next season. Jones would have faced a rebuilding process even had he stayed at Hawaii. The Warriors, who suffered a 41-10 thrashing by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, will lose quarterback Colt Brennan, who finished third in the Heisman voting, and leading receiver Davone Bess, who is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Still, the Warriors are the only football show in Honolulu, which helped turn Jones and Brennan into celebrities in paradise. By contrast, SMU is nearly invisible in the area, overshadowed by the Dallas Cowboys and better college programs at Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and TCU. The Mustangs play in Conference USA, which according to popular power ratings is even weaker than Hawaii's league, the Western Athletic Conference. Jones said, however, that recruiting for SMU will be easier than at Hawaii, where distance made mainland parents reluctant to send their kids. He added that many Texas high schools now run spread offenses featuring the passing game, just like his run-and-shoot. "It'll be fun to watch, and we'll attract the players to come play in our offense," he said. "I know there are a lot of players within 30 miles of this campus." Jones, who turns 55 next month, had a record of 75-41 with Hawaii, including 4-2 in bowl games. His teams finished first in the WAC twice and second two other times. He went to Hawaii after 12 years in the NFL, including stints as head coach at Atlanta and San Diego. Bennett was the fourth coach to lead SMU since it came off the death penalty in 1989. The Mustangs are 58-153-3 and have had only one winning season in that span. Bennett's departure was announced Oct. 28, with four games left in the season, and that was just the beginning of the long hunt for a replacement. Athletic Director Steve Orsini pursued Navy coach Paul Johnson, but he took the opening at Georgia Tech instead. Recently fired Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione and former Miami coach Larry Coker were among those rumored to be in the running. While the SMU search dragged on, Navy found a replacement for Johnson in one day and Texas A&M replaced Franchione in three days. "We took our time. We did it right," Orsini said. "We have to fill up Ford Stadium." SMU got permission to speak with Jones last month. Jones said he watched as many coaching jobs came open and were filled, but the only schools that intrigued him were SMU and Duke. "Hawaii will always be my home," he said. "The opportunity here surpasses everything ... I just really believe this is the time for me to move on." AP sports writer Jim Vertuno in Austin contributed to this report.
  6. Why can't this be done in our own county........UTSA trying to raise some money thru the Bexar County Bond initiatives??? If our county reps would get off their ass, UNT might be closer to a new stadium, at least its worth a shot. Local colleges: Initiative at a glance --Express News Web Posted: 01/09/2008 10:51 PM CST Staff report What's at stake for UTSA? The UTSA athletic department has a $15 million stake in an upcoming vote in Bexar County on financing amateur sports facilities. 7. Who gets the most wins and turns the program around the quickest?
  8. Well done video. Appreciate the effort and you sharing that with us.
  9. SMU only wished this would happen. http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sp...110colfoot.html
  10. A June Jones vs. TD game with last forever with 90 passing attempts and probably even more. That game might set an all-time record for combined passing attempts.
  11. QB's are always the first guys to get bombed with criticism, it comes with the territory. That is why TD did a great job with DM. I think Daniel will come out this spring with all guns blazing making a case for himself again. But once Rodge gets here, it might be a moot point. Rodge and TD have a special bond and TD has faith in his son more than any QB he has ever coached. So it will, no doubt, be interesting once fall practices start.
  12. Well said from a man that can speak from the heart and knows first hand.
  13. Would Dodge recruit Mallett? Of course he would, he would tweak his offense to fit a guy like that without a doubt. Riley will probably start in 2008 given his knowledge of the offense and his relationship with his dad. If you look through the bs, Dodge will start Dodge. The only thing that might happen is that Meager or Vizza will play through the "big money games" and then Riley will probably gets his opportunity then. I have been wrong on this subject before but just guessing. Would Dodge recruit Mallett? Damn straight he would, if possible. A player like that brings national attention.

  15. Poor new DC only gets LSU in his first game. Nothing to prepare for in that one. Only a zillion different formations and all that talent.
  16. I would love to see Riley get his first start against LSU. It may not happen but what a story that would be. LSU would salivate to play against him (especially Les Miles who does not like Coach Dodge from Les's days at Oklahoma State). It would be very interesting to see Riley run the ball against LSU. Meager, Vizza or Riley will get the sh*t kicked out of them with all that speed. We'll start off the season with the worst statistical game of the year on offense. If UNT cannot run the ball, its game over in a hurry. Those LSU DB's (even though they are getting hit hard with graduation) can freakin play. That pass rush was crazy that they put on THE Ohio State. OL, Dunbar and Moseley better get ready for blitz packages coming from every possible scenario. The "hat" (Les Miles) is going to run it up.
  17. Your correct UNTLifer, it looks like Edwards graduates in the spring.
  18. The biggest unknown is really how the players feel about the defense, the defensive staff and game plan. Has Coach Mendoza "lost" the PULSE of the team, has he lost the trust of the team????? TD has to answer that and that will ultimately decide IF a change will be made. IF the players like, respect and believe in Coach Mendoza he might get another year.......if not then TD has an easy decision to leave him as a position coach or let him go.
  19. The third spring transfer is Justin Edwards from E. Arizona J.C. Edwards is a 3 star safety (played HS ball in the metroplex). Edwards had two other offers before committing to UNT, one from Ole Miss and the other from NMSU. Great pick up by Coach Peterson who recruited him.
  20. I doubt Vito is the best source of JC prospects for N. Texas. I do agree that UNT needs more competition on both lines of scrimmage.
  21. No doubt that Dodge is set with Meager, Riley, Vizza, Phillips, Johnson, and Tune. (Assuming they all come back)
  22. Of the 18 commits only Adams, Hill, Williams, Akpunku, Barrett, Rucker, Feeley, and Leppo have offers ONLY from N. Texas (that are verifiable on Rivals). Bolds well that many recruits, who have committed, have multiple offers. QB - Dodge RB - Dunbar Center - Leppo Safety/LB - Phillips OFF. Tackle - Feeley and Franklin (Franklin could be moved to DL considering he was all state) WR - Barrett, Brigham, Rucker OLB - Akpunku Safties - Edwards and Hill (Juco transfers) Shorter and Williams (HS) CB - Adams (juco) and Cook (listed as an athlete but plays CB) Other athletes - Hamilton and Taylor
  23. Twas the night before Christmas in 2007 and Mendoza came to say, "I won't be leaving cause I promise to kick some "A" with a secret game, that will no doubt be here to stay." Mendoza gets his 2008 "D" ready to play each and every week, and invites Fireman Rick over for the game plan blessing, that surely no one can beat. FFR goes over every detail, crossing every "t" and dotting every "i" then gives his eagle claw up towards the sky. FFR tells Mendoza that everything is cool and RM goes wild saying "cock a doodle doo." As we close out 2007, a late Xmas present will be delivered and the crowd is restless for this special one. Riley is coming, the chosen one, of the new age Green Nation. Can he bring new heights of a once proud AA and D-1 sensation? Riley flexes his muscle to say he's the man and puts jersey #11 on to lead us to the promised land. TD goes wild, telling young Riley to chill, for our offense scheme is not quite ready son therefore you will get killed. Give it a season or two young Riley and you will be the man, you'll break every record in the Green promised land. RM and TD are rising to new heights for 2008 is almost in site. Come stadium, come crowd, come conference champions, bring it all, to the proud Mean Green nation.

  25. Division 1 football, baby. Gundy is an ass. This kid will rebound. He has an offer from Ole Miss and TCU. He'll get a deal done from someone. Who knows maybe TD offers him. Riley and Spano could battle in the fall and Spano could enroll now and learn the system. Its obvious that Meager and Vizza will not lay down.
