The teams we have played are improved. This shouldn't be a surprise. Our offense looks bad, our defense is getting picked apart. Well, this isn't marshall and Army we have played the last two games where our defense had their way. Good thing is now we have a USM team at home, that is not as good as the last 3 opponents. Wouldn't surprise me if our offense all of a sudden starts playing better and our defense is back to not getting burnt and getting stops again. The following game is against a UTEP team that isn't all that talented and one we probably should have beat last year.

He got up waving his hands and ran off all in one motion. There was no pose or standing over the WR looking down or talking ish. It was a ref looking for something to call and gave la tech 3 free points. And they showed it on espn a few times. The announcers said it was a bad call.

I think UNT has talent, but like the op is stating, how do we get our players the ball in space. LaTech has looked dynamic over the past few years, but the system has definetly helped. Henderson is an above average talent, but he didn't just blow me away with athletic ability. We have played some good talent over the years that may be just as impressive and maybe even more impressive. What la tech does is find multiple ways to get the ball in their playmakers hands. Reverses, sweeps, screens, etc. If they just lined Henderson out wide and he went out for passes, he wouldn't be all that. Putting him in motion, those criss crossing routes, those pick plays, wr holding, is what gives the defense so much trouble. It's a whole system designed to get him the ball.

Coaches use the strategy of distraction all the time, in multiple sports to protect their player so the player can go back on the field and perform. It happens quite frequently too. If the players are complaining and worried about the refs, the coaches will tell the players to worry about the game, and I will chew the refs out. It's very rare the player continues to jaw and complain once he sees his coach goes off. Coaches even use fake tantrums to get their team fired up.

All of this. That PI call on nate was horrible and weak. That call extended a drive and they scored a TD. Even the espn announcers were expecting a holding call on Henderson the next play. The refs definitely impacted the game.

Expectations for the rest of the season

are they happy? I've only been on here for 4 years, but Seems like they post more about negative than positive. There's more posting when UNT is losing than when they are winning. Especially certain posters. -
MGB weekly prediction: UNT will pull stunner at Army
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Just for this one game, I would have considered playing buyers at corner. This is going to be a very different type of game for our corners and they are going to have to get dirty. -
Goree should be one of the fastest players on the team. If I had to guess, low 4.5, high 4.4 40.

Fine has some things to work on and he did hold the ball too long at times. I think Doc has an issue with the "respectable" comment. At first I didn't think it was a big deal, but after thinking about it, "respectable" doesn't give Fine his props. He's a true freshman, and probably played better than any UNT QB over the past few years. Considering the circumstances, he played really well. Respectable is something I would say for a QB that played well, but the team lost, or a bus driving QB. The defense was a major reason UNT won, but Fine did a lot to help this team beat Marshall.

I guess no one told UTSA about the number of players on scholarship or that they have a new coach and it takes 3 years to rebuild.

He was pretty much telling our team at halftime that we have more talent than what Rice has and we should be whipping them. They can still be a well coached team like he said at the end of the game, but littrel feels like we had a talent advantage, and I agree. It remains to be seen if we have enough talent to win 6 games, but Littrel seems to think so. Even if we don't, it's a good mindset to have because if he thinks we have enough talent to win 6, and we dont, then he will look at himself and the coaching staff instead of complaining about the talent he has.

This. Fine had to be ready to run on the 1st possession. It took us too long to adjust. The offense was better once he started making plays with his feet. We are going to have some adjustments and we are going to practice some plays that we feel are going to be successful. They are going to work in practice. No matter what we tweak, Fine is not going to have time to throw and he needs to start the game with the mentality that he will have to make quick decisions and he may have to run to open things up.

Fans with doom and gloom and saying we will lose can't be good for recruiting either.
-
More picks if the corners can get their heads turned around sooner, but I guess that is the technique they are taught. Still way better than last year.

A lot of the recent sucess of UH still involved 1. upgrades on campus... Athletics and others areas. And 2. the big time booster Tillman Fertitta to even attract and pay Tom Herman. 3. An Administration that wants to be successful in athletics. UH was already a decent team and winning. StIil did not have the fan support and recruits until they stepped up the money.

So get the talent excuse and scholarship excuse outta here. SMU had us significantly beat as far as talent in one area and it was the same last year. QB. Trade QBs, and we whip SMU. Their secondary blew coverages and left our guys open. We just didn't make them pay enough.

They played the coverage of sutton bad all game. Not just the hail mary. The bad coverage on sutton is what created the opportunity for the hail mary. Like I said earlier, c davis was burnt very early in the game and the ball was overthrown. There were no safeties and SMU went back to it several times and it was the same situation. Sad part about the 3rd and 45, they seem to have played it the same way they did when it was 3rd and 11. Two LBs were there waiting for a scramble, but it was 3rd and 45...Safety coverage cheated left. Suton was left one on one. The distance and flight of the ball made the play and coverage look a little closer, but I bet it was the same call and coverage of the 88 yarder and the one that was overthrown. Probably the one that nate was bear on too, but just reversed to the opposite side.

In the post game, he pretty much said he should have made the play. Thats the right mentality. Better technique could have put him in better position, but even if he makes the play one on one, it still has to be alarms going off about the coverage. Davis could have also got a hand on it and it bounces backwards to the wr. Thats how a lot of hail Mary's get caught. Off of tips. Thats why a saftey has to be behind the play to prevent flukey stuff.

On this shot, it looks as if the nickel is at the 12 yard line. Why? Davis is one on one with Sutton. Not the only time Sutton was one on one. The two safeties are in the middle of the field. No one on top of the route yet. Davis was supposed to box him out and jump straight up to knock it down or rip through his arms. The safety over the top should have been there to stop the route and make the WR adjust. The wr was not supposed to get that deep and behind anyone. 2 LBs sitting at the 40 in no man's land. Waiting for what? Davis shouldn't have had enough time to even get that pass off with two free LBs.
-
On the Hail Mary, there's 2 LB sitting at The 40. Who are they guarding? That Official? They could have been on the edges to stop Matt Davis from rolling and getting a clean look or just straight up blitzing. 2 wasted players on 3rd and 45.
-
Wag tag, you are on point. True, there was some bad technique, but I wonder what was the strategy going into the game. Sutton one on one several times. SMU gotta like those chances. Looking at the hail mary replay we had 3 players in no man's land. 2 lbs waiting on a run or some body to come out of the backfield. Nickel was guarding no one. Could have blitzed or something. 88 yarder has to be on the coaches to put him in that position. Sad part is we got away with it early when c davis was burnt and it was overthrown. SMU had to be thinking we are going back to this if they are gonna play it like this. Should have been corrected.

A hail Mary is on the secondary. Chad was there. Should have made the play. Jumped too early. Bad technique, trying to get a cheap pick and pad stats instead of knocking it down. You should have a player underneath and a saftey over top that does not let anyone get behind him. Saftey was out of position especially considering it was sutton. Technique wise Chad did a lot of things questionable in my opinion. I do not think he played well at all. He was burnt on that overthrow. Not understanding no safety over the top on sutton. Same with the 88 yarder. Must have been rolling the saftey to the other side or helping to stop the run. I haven't seen the replay of the game yet. I liked Nate's coverage. Both plays he gave up, you gotta just tip your hat to the WR. Nate did his job. Chad made a nice play on the INT. I can't take that away from him, but it was still a bad game to me.

I thought the move to 3-3-5 and experience would have us with a solid pass defense. If you take away the 2 biggest plays, the hail Mary and the 88 yarder vs the true freshman it would have been a decent performance. Both big plays going to Sutton, their main target. The Hail Mary was a heave for luck, but wondering why he wasn't doubled with a safety over the top. I put a lot of the 88 yarder on the coaching staff. You have 3rd and long and a true freshman lined up on Sutton. Why was the safety coverage rolled to the other side? Had to have been a mistake. I saw some technique issues that need to be cleaned up by the corners, like not getting their head turned around sooner to locate the ball. I was very disappointed in the play from the safeties. I thought they would be able to do much more ball hawking in a 3-3-5. It also seems like they took a step back in run support. Last year they came up and made a lot of open field tackles that they missed vs SMU. I'm sure Matt Davis posed a big problem with his running though. I think we will see better safety play against a QB that does not pose a running threat like Matt Davis.

How Does The QB look? Can he run and break tackles?
