I still haven't seen a legit reason to support chico other than he is a cool dude. Is the team playing better? We just beat a horrible team and our offense is still bad. Our defense looks a little better against a bad QB. I need something to analyze to support chico. If we beat mtsu and utep, then we might have something. There is no evidence of improved coaching or playcalling. Give me some recruiting examples or player development examples. Everyone on this board would have started demarcus and threw in the youngsters, that doesn't mean we can be head coach.

How Much Time Do We Give The New Coach To Get Us Bowl Eligible
GOMG2013 replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
hopefully a new coaching staff can get more out of the fast LBs we have with Ellis and minor. Ellis went from being able to hold his own as a true freshman, to all of a sudden not even seeing the field? -
whats the deal with means? I know there was a 3* qb interested in UNT in 2014. Had a lot of offers too.

you left off means. That was canales.

How Much Time Do We Give The New Coach To Get Us Bowl Eligible
GOMG2013 replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
We started the year with mcnulty so, we really don't know if we are sitting with a 1 win team, or a 4 win team. Time will tell. If we end the year with 3 wins, then I will say with the proper handling of the qb situation and reasonable scheduling, this team may have been a 6 win team... -
Sid moore has to get his attitude right.

How Much Time Do We Give The New Coach To Get Us Bowl Eligible

nope. Thats part of the problem too. We don't have players to run a plodding offense and we were still trying to run one. The players we have now are geared more for a spread. Wilson, goree, ivery, kidsy, smiley, rutherford, thompson...not plodding. Mac's style of play is not insane. It has worked several times and it is still working for a lot of schools. We just can't recruit the talent to pull it off, or we just didn't have the staff to recruit the players to fit that style. -
Chico is a good dude. Can he coach? Sad part is, the head coach doesn't do much coaching or recruiting. He could actually be a better head coach than Co ordinator or position coach. What kind of staff could he put together though?

Smith still isn't ready to lead a good team. I can see why he didn't start the season. I Don't blame mac at all for not starting smith game 1. It would have been admitting we are rebuilding. Smith is learning on the fly. I do blame mac for smith not starting after the first two losses and it was obvious our season was in trouble. Are fans watching the games? There's no big turn around on offense. There's no great new offensive game plan that has evolved. It's a raw athlete that has been plugged in and he is making something out of a bad offense by running the ball. Chico should get credit for putting him in there, but that's about it on offense. Chico should also get credit for putting in young players and giving them a chance. Not sure if he is responsible for the tighter corner coverage on defense instead of 10 yards off, but I guess he gets credit there too. Chico is making decisions that people on this board would have made.

So, if UTSA beats us by double digits...

you just reminded me of the empty backfield stupidity we do...with no safety valve either... -

problem is i predict UTSA will bring pressure and be 5 yards off our WRs. Not sure what we will do. -
MGB weekly prediction: UNT will pull through against rival UTSA
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
what scares me is how long it takes us to adjust. Marshall was starting a true freshman with little experience at QB. One would think we would have loaded the box on them and made the qb throw against tight coverage. Instead, it looks like we came out in nickel. Really? Did we bother to blitz the young QB? We eventually adjusted with tighter coverage, but it was too late. And there was a very questionable PI call on nate brooks that should have gotten us off the field. I hope we start the game in tight man coverage. 3 LBs concentrating on stopping the run and pressuring the QB and safeties playing the pass and looking to snag the ball out of the air...like a normal defense... -

It would prove not only was Mac bad...but he was trying to cover for an even worse coaching staff. -
Disagree there's a decent amount of players that are Definetly D1 material from an athletic standpoint. In fact, a lot of these guys probably would have played earlier if they were on different teams or in different systems. Not too many programs would roll mcnulty out there over DSmith. Smith would have been the starter day 1 even though he missed Spring. There's some programs that start true freshmen that were in high school in the spring.

apogee stadium and the facilities are not as big as a recruiting advantage as this fanbase and administration thinks. It can break a tie vs a school with a stadium like fouts, but it isn't a deciding factor at all.

I agree with this. The next coach has to bring more to the table. One of the biggest things forgotten in hiring a head coach is his ability to attract good Co ordinators. The good up and coming Co ordinators are not going to join a coach that they think they are much better than. Whoever it is, they have to be respected in the coaching community. We talk a lot about how good a coach has recruited, but if we use levine as an example, he was a great recruiter while he was a position coach. Once you become a head coach, you are no longer recruiting like you used to. You have to assemble a staff for that. The ability to assemble a solid staff and attract up and coming talent is going to be important in building AND sustaining a winning program.
-
because he was the top recruiter in creating that 13-1 team. He will have to hire good Co ordinators also, but recruiting is half the battle. And that 13-1 team lost Case Keenum, so he really didn't inherit a 13-1 team. He's not great. But UNT won't attract or pay for great. It will be someone unproven, or a retread. since he is unemployed, he may take a job as a Co ordinator just to get back into coaching. He should be a candidate if people are talking gill, mangino, and coaches with no D1 coaching experience. Who the new coach is he will have to hit the ground running as far as recruiting. Cannot wait for a coach to build relationships. UNT is starting from scratch.

Levine's last two years UH went bowling. He was fired while having winning seasons. Would be a definite upgrade if he could get UNT to that point. UH fans and alumni were looking for more than just being bowl eligible so he didn't last. It would be silly to not have him on the list. If a bigger name is available, you take it, but I would take levine over gill, mangino, etc.
-
Seems like he deserves some sort of article or mention of how he is missed, how we have had a hard time replacing him, and a recap of his 2013 All CUSA season and his UNT career stats. Instead, we get forced fed someone else...

Defense made changes. They played a lot of man coverage most of the game. Looks like the defense improved, but that was against a young QB. Should have opened the game with tighter coverage going in, if we knew the QB was young, but seems like the adjustments came too late.
-
Can he start working with the offense this season then? Start 2015 rolling...
-
fast does not mean quick. He also has technique issues. He is not a corner. He has straight line speed, but you have to have flexibility and body control to play corner. Maybe if we press and he knows exactly who he has to cover. Any hesitation, or uncertainty out there, then it doesn't matter how fast you are. Speed going the wrong way puts you out of position more. Marshall is fast though. No doubt.
-
I'm sure he's interested and has most likely already contacted UNT. He is a great recruiter in Texas. Even as a head coach, he was involved in recruiting. Definite upgrade. He is a player's coach though. I'm not sure if his mindset changes after the UH experience, but some said he was too nice and not enough disipline. Cool guy. Would not be a bad hire if you can't get a better name. Have to see who he can bring in as the Co ordinator though.

Any good defense is going to have solid LBs. Yes the DL and DBs could be better, but the glaring drop off from our 2013 team is the LBs talent wise and football IQ wise. I don't like the way we use our LBs, but it worked in 2013, so it has been successful before. These guys just can't play this defense. They cannot cover at all. And all this reading in the passing game is hurting them in run support. Our corners are playing off like safeties. They LBs are supposed to help on the underneath stuff. They are too slow. May as well blitz them and have them key on the run. We are wasting them in coverage. I think we can improve their play with a different defense, but it may be too late for that. On another thread there was a complaint about burning the young LB redshirt. I am glad. He will have 6 games under his belt and hopefully he can start next year. We went from Orr and Akunne who are on NFL teams to what we have now. This is the area of concern.
