Fine needed to run. Yes they were sending only 4 and still getting in, but Fine was sitting back there early like he's gonna be able to pull off being a pocket passer. Did not use his mobility to run or move the pocket. They dropped 7 back. He needed to ruck it and run. Going into the game we knew the line was overmatched. Did we really practice like he would have time as a pocket passer? Looks like it.
-
He was the final say so. If he didn't like a recruit for defense, it wasn't gonna happen. He knew what he wanted for his system. and I have personally seen Skladany in Houston for recruiting. He didn't do grunt work though.
-
Guyton and Fine are major upgrades. The offensive system was a big upgrade. Thats about it. Defensive coaching and scheme is a huge downgrade. Players that showed flashes of talent like our secondary has looked horrible. Mac needed a new OC and offense. Mac still wouldn't have survived cause Skladany was gone, but at least Skladany had a handle on who to recruit to run HIS system. Ref ain't even close and im afraid the system he runs we won't be able to recruit the players to run it. We are going to need 3 star level talent at corner, safety, and linebacker to pull off a 3-3-5.

How Seth attracts the "next level" talent is going to be the biggest question. in a lot of cases, not most, BUT A LOT...the top player in the area are going to come with baggage, attitudes, cockiness, overrate themselves, hard to coach, etc. People on here diss McCarney and teased him for saying it is hard to recruit at UNT, but i don't see much difference. The 1-11 is going to continually get thrown around, but there was obviously talent there. Seth just upgraded the QB position from horrible to quality and the wins came. looking at the pipeline, im not seeing an increase in talent from the McCarney teams.

***OFFICIAL UNT VS. FAU C-USA CONF CHAMP GAME THREAD***
GOMG2013 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not a fan of Ref, but don't forget we still have ZERO points. Offense is not good. Some has been over rating the o all year. -
I wouldn't be surprised if FAU and even Troy (if they win) get in the top 25.
-
This. A 3-3-5 is not built to stop a power running game, but to use TCU as an example, it can stop a team that is trying to run out of a spread type formation. One problem with us is our 3-3-5 is predictable and a bigger problem is we don't have the hybrid players like TCU to make it unpredictable and successful. We barely have players on defense that can do one thing at a high level. We will need hybrid players that can blitz, stop the run and tackle in space, have a high IQ and play recognition, speed, and the ability to cover to pull off a successful 3-3-5.

Fine is going to have to do some running to win this game and keep them honest. Their pass coverage is not intimidated by our system and they will try to cover our WRs with as little as possible and use the rest to shut down the run. I don't see our WRS getting much seperation, so Fine is going to have to scramble and hurt them running a few times to loosen the defense up and stop them from coming after him so much.

North Texas, Houston Adjust Date For Future Series
GOMG2013 replied to Tyler Maryak's topic in Mean Green Football
Would this be considered old Denton too? I'm asking cause...you know...this has been done before. Or is this one considered a good thing? I'm asking so I can know if I should be excited or not. Don't want to jump the gun as a recent follower of UNT. -
Brett McMurphy says North Texas Lock for NOLA
GOMG2013 replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm sure it wasn't referring to anything close to going bowling...if that were the case it would be more like bring old Denton back...cause that was pretty much some of the best years.- 418 replies

I'm pretty sure the term #oldDenton is associated with failure and being unproductive. I wasn't even close to following UNT in the early 2000s, but to associate going to 4 straight bowls, (even if it is the New Orleans bowl), as the "olddenton" the term was referring to...is just...- 418 replies

Brett McMurphy says North Texas Lock for NOLA
GOMG2013 replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
I kinda agree... But with a similar senario, would a weak P5 bump attendance at Apogee like Wake, Purdue, Vandy? Would beating them have any impact? Unless we are talking about a P5 that is recognized in Texas like a KState or TX tech, it still wont make a difference if we are talking about perception and quality of the win.- 418 replies

I agree about the 10 wins. 10 wins is a big milestone to reach, and it's going to give UNT a huge chance at GETTING RANKED IN THE TOP 25. Beating a weak P5 would be nice, but it's also going to be a "but" that goes with it cause you beat a weak P5, or you played the P5 on a down year. Troy whipped a RANKED LSU in their house...but just by reading the comments on this board, Troy isn't getting any added hype. UNT won't either by beating a weak unranked P5 that barely makes a bowl. Back to the being ranked. That is much more important and prestigious. It's going to be hard to leave a 10 win team out top 25. And for recruiting purposes, being ranked ahead of everyone else speaks for itself.- 418 replies

Why Do We Struggle With Recruiting?
GOMG2013 replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
There's a lot more that determine on the field success, so to use that to judge recruiting is misleading. Good recruiting (collecting the most talent) is a big start to success though. But not the only thing. Examples are A&M, LSU, Texas...their recruiting success has not translated on the field. Does that mean those high rated recruits are overrated? Nope. Because the talent was still there at one point and maybe it wasn't the right fit. Maybe they were out of position, bad coaching etc. Players from A&M, LSU, and Texas are still going pro though. Even though it has not translated on the field, the talent was still there. For those that think the ratings don't matter, then look at what happens when you plug in a talent like Guyton. -
Why Do We Struggle With Recruiting?
GOMG2013 replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Spot on. Couldn't be said any better. Not sure why there's down votes. Recruiting is collecting talent. Just because a team is winning or getting better does not mean recruiting has improved. Evaluating what you have and development has improved at UNT...especially at QB. Fine is a nice QB and we are having a good season, but to take the next step and remain consistent yearly, recruiting has to improve. -
He got hurt again, so maybe he just gave it up. Still don't know why he is off the roster and did not ride it out unless he didn't want to go through all the team stuff and showing up and going through all the motions.
-
The way we guarded Sutton... Kishawn looked better his soph year than he did his Jr and Sr years... FAU game... benching Jenkins at the start of the year and barely letting him get any reps while our defense was getting picked apart... Not sure about Ref.
-
Smith looked good. Man, he gets to hole fast and that is very important to a line that isn't going to knock the DL back. The hole won't be open too long, so a back like Smith is going to make a huge difference.
-
I listen to Salisbury on the radio in Houston. He trains high school and college QBS and considers himself a QB guru since he worked for ESPN and has NFL experience. He is normally very critical of QBs, so I was surprised he so complimentary and loved Fine so much.

Fantasy matchup: 2013 UNT DT team vs 2017 Fine team
GOMG2013 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
2013 team would come close to running the table against this year's schedule and opponents. They would lose 1 they shouldnt cause of Mac and DT having a bad day, so 11-1. The 2017 team may win 5 or 6 vs the 2013 schedule. The 2017 offense is not that prolific guys. Please stop. It's a huge improvement and in a few years it should be unstoppable, but even this past week, it did not win the game like that. Needed lots of help and stops from the defense. -
In 2013 we had this guy named Brelan Chancellor who was unstoppable in open space. The other slot would have been Carlos Harris who was quick and also a playmaker. Both were very gritty and these WRS could BLOCK. We also had a back Jimmerson who would have absolutely went off catching passes in a spread offense. Probably could have lined up in the slot at times. All these guys had success even in a predictable, boring, run 1st offense, so their playmaking ability was not due to the system.
-
Chancellor in a spread offense...not fair. I was kinda torn between Byrd and Wilson, but Byrds durability gave him the edge to me, and let's not forget Jimmerson if we needed to get a back the ball in space. I want a back that is going to break that 1st tackle. Especially when there's line issues.
-
I would still rather have the 2013 offensive personell, running this year's offense. Only thing I would add from this year's offense is guyton and fine just in case DT started messing up.
-
The obvious measuring stick as far as talent is speed and size. You also have to factor experience in there too. Iowa was much bigger than UNT. If you had a choice of which linemen you would pick between both teams, your whole OL and DL would be all Iowa players. FAU was a lot faster as a team than we were. Our talent level is a lot better than the score indicated, so I put a lot of blame on the coaching. They had the speed to cover our WRs, and that caused problems. Their offensive scheme vs our defensive scheme was a complete mismatch. A coaches job is to put the player in position to make the play. I see too many times where a player is not in position to make the play. We could have Earl Thomas in our secondary, but if he isnt playing deep on 3rd and long, he can't make the play. If Sutton snags on two defenders I would say, he just had more talent. If a running back is breaking tackles and juking our guys, I would say, the coaches put the player where he needed to be, he just couldn't physically make that play. Too many times I see wide open space and players no where to be found. That is a blown coverage and a coaches call wasn't close to being where the play was going. The end of the UTSA game was more talent and playmaking than coaching.
-
Records don't mean there's talent. I am watching games and the talent on the field. When we play teams that can match us athlete for athlete. To be more specific, athletes that can match up with our wrs stride for stride and our defense vs a capable QB. UTSA had a horrible secondary. Their QB is one dimensional and his game hasn't changed in 3 years. USM QB was not good and is inexperienced. You would pick Fine over those QBs. We have a talent edge. We are going to lose vs teams that can cover our wrs and the offense will struggle. We face a beast RB or a capable Qb our defense will get shredded. Our coaching has yet to be the deciding factor in winning a game in my opinion. Did Army have better athletes in our bowl loss? Nope.
