We cant base much on hid offers because he committed early in the process. March of his Jr year he committed early to wake forest. He flipped to Bama in August. Don't know if he would have received more offers had he opened up his recruitment. What's the chances of flipping a Bama commit?

If he goes to a school like Tennessee, they won't need him to recruit and find diamonds in the rough. He will get to work with at least mid level 3 star talent.

This game was a coaching mismatch. Herman and staff were a step ahead on just about everything. Also, they never played safe. Didn't try to milk the clock with the lead, kept on blitzing. This was proof that coaching can bridge a talent and size difference.

The sad part is what Chico was running was simple and complex at the same time. Seems like we had 10 simple, ineffective sets and offenses. Not one of them effective enough to build an identity off of. The Air raid could actually be easier to learn than the stuff chico rolled out there. The Air raid has one play that can do 5 different things. Chico's offense has it where you have to change it to another play. That is where miscommunication, blown blocking assignment, wrong routes can take place. As far as learning defenses, our philosophy was to let the defense dictate what we will run. Air raid puts pressure on the defense. He still needs to read defenses, but it is more of a looking for matchups to exploit than what overall defense they are running. Some may even blitz an air raid, but if smith gets lose, it won't be 8 in the box to help. What chico ran is nothing close to what smith ran in juco. Just a guess, but this offense will be easier for smith to learn and run out of.

I agree about the dumb decisions. Part of those sacks were due to improvising and trying to do too much. Thats what happens when you don't know the offense and can't read defenses. That will definetly need to get fixed. I am making a lot of assumptions. I am assuming the Air raid offense concept and terminology is similar to what he ran at juco. I am assuming Littrell can spread teams out, where smith has to only beat the front 4 and a LB to get some yards running. I am assuming his touch gets better with reps. I am assuming the air raid makes decision making easier instead of worrying about the defense killing you.

He showed me he could run. And that is still an asset in football...even at QB. He looked HORRIBLE at passing though. If he is in a pass first offense, I am with you. His passing looked a lot better 8n juco though, so some of it could be not enough reps and sitting out. We will see in the spring. Even if he doesn't start, i bet Littrell uses him. Goaline, red zone, short yardage...

Well Rick, I guess when we play an SEC team we will lose.

Comparing passing stats of an air raid offense to whatever we were running is like comparing apples to hamsters. An Air raid system is going to have more wrs open, have wrs with more separation, and simple 5 yard passes and screens will pad completion percentage stats. Like I said, williams is better right now. He knows the offense. He's not an unreasonable amount better than smith from an athletic standpoint. Littrell may be able to get something out of smith. Williams is inaccurate, so they caled plays based on his skills. Litrell can do the same for smith if it comes down to it. I wouldnt count smith out because Littrell can work with a run first QB is my point.

In watching the bowl games UNC and Wash St. They both ran Air raid/spread type systems, but UNC ran the ball a lot more. Littrell called the plays, but was not the OC. If I had to guess, he would rather the Air raid look similar to Wash State and what leach runs. When watching UNC, they had a QB that reminded me of Damarcus smith. Williams is better than damarcus smith cause he has a better touch and grasp of the offense. Williams is not accurate though and his strength was running and not throwing. What I liked is that the coaching staff coached and developed a system around his skills. Even though Littrell came from a pass happy version, they made adjustments based on talent. After watching UNC, I wouldn't count damarcus smith out now. He has a shot. Even if nor starting, I can see litrell getting the most out of his talent and use him like he used williams.

Agree. And that us why I wonder why our OC kept getting a pass by a lot of people on here. Considering Mac has coached mobile QBs that can run in the past, and was part of a ship with one who's strength was running, I seriously doubt he would have been against a running offense like Baylor had last night. There is no excuse. Look at the talent and put the best system our there that can get the best talent in position to make plays. Baylor was using RBs, Wrs, anybody that could make a play in space.

Baylor. Running all over them with the wildcat.

Great job of creating an offense around the talent you have. And they did it in a few weeks.

If we are talking realistic, LB is the biggest need. We had recent success with an average DLine, but All Conf LBs. Hoping for an all conf DT is wishful thinking. We definetly need both though. LB should be easier to achieve in my opinion.

Its relative to who we play though...I'll bite too. Who on UTSA, UTEP, SMU, Army, Rice, etc would you see that could be on Bamas 2 deep?

I wouldnt. Winners win. Some fans bash mac for not having confidence, being old fashioned, and saying there is no talent and woe is me, but they are the coach mac equivalent when it comes to fandom. Lots of coach macs on here. I'm surprised he's bashed so much.

We have a 3 star grad transfer from bama, so we upgraded talent. I am going to assume we upgraded coaching for plenty reasons, and we upgraded the system to air raid. 3 areas of upgrade from last season. 1 or 2 of those upgrades should make a difference and it's reason to be excited. I was wondering why littrell would go out on a limb and insinuate we would be bowling. I can see reason for his optimism now. And kincade is still considering UNT. Littrell must really be selling the "talent" that is remaining.

Tom Herman built his staff with coaches with very strong texas ties. Especially houston area. Naviar, giles, pope, applewhite...Tom herman is definitely doing his part, but the staff he put together is one of the best.

if I had to guess without doing any research, even though he did not get an offer, he had texas a&m showing serious intrest. That means more than just the mass generic mail outs. He had a recruiter assigned to him and in contact with him. Probably after his junior year...then grades came into play. He was able to get some offers late, but just getting P5 intrest your jr year may be enough to get you 3 stars or close. Just a guess.

MGB: Dee Baulkman intrigued by UNT offer from new DC
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Recruited for nickel role, safety, or corner.... Just a guess, but I hope that means a 4-2-5 is coming. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but who mentions nickel like that unless it's a starting spot. -
wow. Just wow. You win.

MGB: Pre-spring questions series No. 2 -- Is the talent there?
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
based on what you listed, shanbour. Arm strength is not as important as ability to read defenses and get rid of the ball quickly. Its about lining up and taking what the defense gives you, as quick as possible. Didn't see the QB run much, so only mobility needed is to move the pocket and avoid pressure. Accuracy needs to be good from 10-20 yards with a few shots deep when the matchup calls for it. Unless Littrell modifies the offense to take advantage of demarcus running ability, he may struggle. His timing and touch, even for short passes, was awful. It can get better with spring and lots more reps, but can he read defenses? If he can pick up the system and add the legitimate threat of a QB running, it can be a very explosive offense.
