Morris looked better than anything I have seen at UNT at QB and shanbour looked lIke a quality backup. Morris made some throws I haven't ever seen from a UNT QB and some were in tight coverage. Unlike previous Spring games he went against the 1st team, and they brought pressure and different looks. I'm glad Morris didn't go against the 2s. Shanbour had wrs with more separation. There was a big drop off with the 2nd team secondary. In a normal situation preston and Brooks would have been leading that 2nd team secondary. Shanbour looked good and made good decisions. I saw some play making ability out there against the 1st team defense. You add ivery to that and we may have something.

I wanted to see coaching and the QBs. Not sure how many games we win, but we have upgraded both areas.

I don't remember them being that expensive in the past.

When I come on GMG, I expect it to be like a cyber man-cave with the fellas, cyber sports bar, a barbershop type atmosphere to talk about sports. Mainly UNT sports. Instead, it's a hair salon with gossipy women. And not hot women either. The scorned women that b!tch about everything and can't find anything positive to say about a man. There's very little football discussed on this forum. And it was still lacking in 2013. I already know the excuse, RV made us this way...No he didnt. You are either a sports guy or you are not. Some on here just like UNT and are not into sports like that. Thats ok, but we need much more balance. Some are flat out scared to offer a sports take because they are afraid of being wrong. They would rather predict failure and be pleasantly surprised. Some predict failure and have sports related reasons, and those are good. Those that say UNT will fail because we have always failed, offer nothing to the convo. You are the scorned woman that let one bad relationship ruin her. The young, nice looking girl needs to get away from you before you ruin her. We have some that don't want to call out "kids" and their performance, but just let a thread about a brush with the law come up on here...thread will be about 7 pages with all kinds of comments and analysis. If you are going to bash, then you should also give credit when it is due. You can't have 20 long negative posts and when it's time to give props, you have one post saying good job...GMG. And I'm not talking about just one poster. If there were more fans talking about sports, those bad posters would not get much attention. BillySee did a good job on the recruiting forum. I'm not sure if it was even worth it though. Once again, a post about a recruit may have a few views and comments, vs a post about RV getting pages. Having articles and posts about a recruit can be a good thing and sell the program, but what happens when a kid comes across it to find out what the fans say, and it's crickets. We had a recent commit, and it barely makes a blip on here. Article about Zac Orr...yawn. Article about a starting corner moving to WR...yawn ...let's talk about crime and RV...breaking news...

This. We have an offense that will utilize both of our explosive backs and top players and they will be in the game at the same time. Then you add top recruit goree and others. We go from being an offense that can key on stopping one player, to at least having 3 weapons on the field at all times.

This is the best way to get a good look at the new offense and defense. We should want to mainly see the 1s and 2s go at each other. The depth issue comes when you mix in the 3s and 4s. With mac's scrimmages, there were too many players out on the field that were never going to play. And not just play that year. They were never going to play a down of D1 football. I know, most schools have bench players play in the spring game. At least some of those schools have young talent that will eventually play in the future seasons. I remember ome spring game where we constantly threw at #29. That is not a good way to judge a QB or offense and going against that type of talent leads to what happened with greer. Young players can give a unit a decent look if they still possess D1 athleticism, but in our case, it's best to only have the 1s and 2s go at it to make sure we get a good look at both sides. Even though I am disappointed, it makes the most sense. This staff continues to impress me with the way they go about business.(when compared to the previous staff)

You made a mistake trying to call out my mistake...Memphis has always been a G5 school. You meant P5. Either way, fans think these G5 schools are going out and doing some great negotiating, and that's not how it works. The big schools have the upper hand and they do most of the initiating. And history proves my point, when the big schools back out of playing when the lower school may make the game more competitive than they originally thought. My point about memphis was that it seems like they initiated scheduling us. Especially the way it was announced. The G5 schools are at the mercy of the top schools when it comes to scheduling. They are trying to get the advantage. They want an easy win, just like UNT wants when they schedule idaho and Bethune cookman. (Cant say portland state)

I hope some fans realize when these schedules are made, it's not the G5 schools that are initiating the agreement. A lot of times the P5 school is going out and looking for easy victories to schedule. Memphis has UTSA and UNT on their schedule. Coincidence? Nope.

I agree. But it won't take a head coaching vacancy for Harrell to leave. If UNT is successful, a big school can target Harrell as coordinator. With 2 years success, he could be gone from UNT where he could make more money.

MGB: Thursday afternoon practice notes
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Good stuff. It's good to get some details about the team and actual FOOTBALL info. So Buyers is a WR now...it would be cool to see Buyers get a prominent role on offense and possibly make some noise at WR in CUSA. After starting at CB, getting hurt and missing a 1-11 season with a lame duck coaching staff. Turns out that sitting out was a blessing in disguise from a football perspective. He comes back and looks to be the front runner at his old position where he had some success. Not sure if Buyers has next level aspirations, but he wasn't going to get it at corner. Now he moves to WR. Crazy how things play out, but it would be something if Buyers does a good job and gets a shot on the next level at WR. this staff seems like the complete opposite of mac's in almost everything. Would have loved to see what they would have done with some of the talent we had over the last few years. -
MGB: Kirby taking leave of absence, UNT trying Buyers at WR
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
When I first read that buyers was getting a "long" look at WR, this came off as another position switch like jamal marshall last spring and he never played. From what Im hearing, it is very serious. They like nate enough to hold it down and think buyers is a better WR than corner. I personally think Buyers is a decent corner and would be an upgrade from what we had last year. He's at least an average D1 corner. They must really like Buyers at WR. He may have a chance to start. Can I make Buyers the WR, my sleeper pick? -
MGB: Kirby taking leave of absence, UNT trying Buyers at WR
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree. I would assume he is quick if they are giving him a look. And just because you get beat, does not mean you are not fast. If wrs and rbs are consistently running by you then you may be slow. A fast DB can be beat if he comes out of his back pedal too late, takes a bad angle, stutter steps, or is in the wrong position. Marshall clocked a 4.4 and ran track, and he got beat. Zed Evans was a 4.3 guy...Bet Littrell would have found a way to use the little brother. I think Erick Evans. He was also in the 4.3 range. -

Draft scout is not accurate. Thats just an estimate until an official time is taken at a comine or pro day. It has 4.65 as the high for Chad Davis. And the last time he ran a time that slow had to be freshman year in high school. No way he ran that while at UNT. 4.69 for jamal marshall as a high. No way. 4.5 as a low. He has consistently been 4.4 while at UNT. If I had to guess, Buyers is a 4.55 or slower. -
Graham Harrell should be next in line, but with some success, he will become a target real quick.

It depends on how you look at it because there may not be as may athletes in their area, but they aren't fighting 12+ schools either. La Tech can't compete in state with LSU, but they can go blow for blow with anybody else for the ones LSU won't get. Same in WV and Marshall. Being in DFW can be an advantage if you are putting forth the same amount of footwork, money, and time the other programs are. If not, you are better off being in a state with only a few schools to compete with and having the best shot at the athletes the big school doesn't want.

To say these camps have no impact on recruiting is silly. Of course they do. Teams wouldn't spend money and time doing it, and the NCAA wouldn't ban it if it didnt. Once again, its a waste of time comparing other schools outside of Texas to the competiton of recruiting areas like DFW and greater Houston. Why do fans bring up other schools like marshall and latech? Ok, we are in the same conference, but that's about it. Recruiting in texas is a totally different ball game. IT'S NOT A MYTH. Recruiting DFW and Houston is even harder. The whole NATION is recruiting those areas hard. This ruling will add value back to those combine/camps and events that are hosted by outside parties. Nike, Under Armor, next level, NCSA, NUC, etc. Their film just became valuable again, so I know they are happy. They can go back to selling footage and info to colleges.
-
I think Brett makes some valid points about UNT and recruiting, but a lot of those issues Brett mentioned were due to Mac and his staff having a poor recruiting strategy. Littrell is going about things totally different. He is not relying on camps as much. This staff is much more aggressive and in tune with the latest trends. The current staff is going to have to go out and put in the footwork and develop relationships. Seems like mac just depended on a camp rolling in an area. And for those that think having Texas ties is not that big a deal, it really has become even more important now.
-
I agree. They brought back the most starters and experience. You add Buyers back and are also plugging in English, the defense should be ahead of the offense right now. The tighter coverage, the unpredictability, and the blitzing should be a step ahead of a new offense and new starters.
-
How can you not get excited for this team? This guy is going to get some results. These guys are getting coached now.
-
Ok 90...let's judge a QB by how he gets hit...come on man. Greer was bad even when he wasn't getting hit. The speed of the game was the issue. Was it fear of getting hit hard? Or just fear of messing up. Either way, the objective for a QB is to NOT get hit. I'm sure his time at bama on scout team and being 3rd string, he got to go against a very fast agressive defense. Ok, he didn't get unleashed on, but I can assume he had to develop skills such as reading defenses quickly, getting rid of the ball, moving the pocket, throwing on the run, and not holding the ball. All things that greer had issues with that created the situations where he got hit. He's a QB. Not a RB. He's not supposed to get hit. Most QBs aren't built to take too many hits. Most QBs get rattled once they get hit.

If you Google alec morris and alabama, theres a lot of positive things that come up and reason to be excited. Someone mentioned josh greer. He is no josh greer. He is unproven like greer was, but even being 3rd string at bama gives him much more than greer had, as only playing a few games of juco. Ok, morris couldn't start for the best championship winning, semi pro football program in the nation. Just to be in the running at least shows he belongs on a D1 football roster. And that is a huge improvement. Once you read what so called experts say about him, there's plenty to be excited about. But instead of being excited, we will have several discussions about the BACKUP!...really? The backup gets more discussion than Morris? Only at UNT... and for those that say "if our starter get hurt, our season is over"...half the teams in college football can say that. Of course your team will fall off if the starting QB goes down. Come on...

So someone was looking at the Memphis upcoming schedule and just so happen that we are on there...got to do a better job selling the program. This is actually a good story too.

I was told it was voted on by the players, by a player. A parent of a player also came on here and said the same. You had the option for the watch or rings. That is what I was told. It may not be true or maybe that's what they told the players to shut them up.
