UNT's 2016 post-spring depth chart (with comments)
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm still thinking...I havent made up my mind. it's hard. On one hand you have UNT90... The other hand you have a coach that looks like a straight shooter on the surface. Doesn't seem to play games. He could have easily let morris, goree, wilson, Rutherford and all the starters go out there and blast the scout team. Could have had Shanbour go against the 1s to make his choice for morris look a lot more solid. He also seem to be straight up with Greer and demarcus smith. Could have easily had this open comp with smith and at minimum had smith as an insurance policy. He also seem to be straight up when he moved a solid starting corner that was once CUSA honorable mention, to WR. But in this interview with Goree, he told Goree to go out there and give some coachspeak about Morris...it's possible. Right now, I'm giving you the edge cause of our GMG connection i have known you longer. -
UNT's 2016 post-spring depth chart (with comments)

Ok, I have a tough decision here. Go by what goree said out of his mouth, go by all the reports from practice that said the morris to goree connection looks good this spring, go by what some players have personally said to me, and go from what my eye balls, Stats, and highlights showed last Saturday... Or trust UNT90 that it was all playerspeak...hmm....hard choice. -

But if he is DT, with this offense, it could be exactly what we need. DT had his shortcomings, but a lot of it had to do with the offensive coaching, talent, and predictability of the offense. DT had a good deep ball, and it was rarely used. Not even once in a while to keep a defense honest. I have seen the Air raid with a mobile QB that can dink and dunk with a quick release. Case Keenum comes to mind. Shanbour can be a poor man's Keenum and tear up CUSA. Problem is the talent we have at WR. UNT has backs that were similar to UH as far as shiftiness and cutting ability, but UH also had a lot of speed with their Air raid. UNT isn't even close as far as speed to have a dink and dunk system like that. UH had issues when it needed a big play with the smaller guys and also stalled in the red zone at times. The issue with the dink and dunk, quick release air raid is when you face a team with just as much speed and the athletes that can man up. Those big open spaces aren't there anymore. The makeup and strength of UNT's WR is height. To take advantage of that, there needs to be a vertical deep threat to open up the underneath stuff to a slot and RBs. Having a 6'5 athlete on one end will create serious matchups. You need a strong arm and a QB that can throw the ball with air under it. Dink and dunk, quick passes to 6'2 Smith, 6'3 goree, 6'5 Rutherford doesn't take advantage of the WR strengths and mismatches. -

Tee likes Morris, and he is our best WR. Since we are going to "Tee" it up and let it fly, I'm sure that their connection is probably the most important, and judging by the spring SCRIMMAGE, that part seems to be fine. We also have a 6'5 guy on the outside with either OK or Bendy. I have been hearing those connections have been good, and actually saw some in person Saturday. Unfortunately for Shanbour, he may not have even had the chance to work with those WRs. -
The key is getting that combine invite. In 2016 only 10-14 SS are projected to get drafted. CB is close to 30 projected in 7 rounds each year.
-
I was also thinking mcclain, but there's a lot if his type around. There's not many safeties that get drafted and the ones that do, seem to come from big schools. He definitely has the skill and frame, but I can see some saying this conference doesn't prepare him for physical football, like the P5s. He should get a look if he can make some all conference teams.
-
I think tee goree and nate brooks gives UNT the best shot at getting a player drafted.

An honest question for the Vito anti-Shanbour folks

But notice he said you get speed first, then add weight. Said nothing about size, weight, and fatness like some have hammered on here as a topic. -
MGB: Satellite camps are back on, why that's good for UNT

Can they rethink the transfer rule? Probably won't since the big school are the ones that are losing players instead of gaining them. -
An optimistic view of the spring scrimmage
GOMG2013 replied to Tyler Maryak's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not sure some understand the differecent between a spring game and a scrimmage. A game is where you are trying to out scheme an opponent. A scrimmage is where you are going against the other unit, but there's not much trying to trick the opponent with play calling. In a lot of cases, the defense and offense knows what is coming. It didn't take me long to realize it would majority passing the whole game. Pretty sure the secondary and pass rush knew too. One series morris threw the ball out of bounds and the knew the route. They ran the same exact play the next time with the same coverage and same result. No hard to realize they said run that again and the db knew it. -

This. Best Spring performance I have seen in 3 years. Very competitive and not just the 1st team whipping up on the scout team. Guys were out there competing for a spot. -
I like Mac as a person, and I'm not trying to take anything away from the 2013 season, but in most of our games we brought more talent than the others team. It wasn't ALL due to some great recruiting by Dodge either. We just brought more talent and EXPERIENCE in 2013 than other teams. Some things just fell our way. Many teams we played had young QBs. We caught La Tech and So miss, who were usually decent teams in a transistion. To me, the mark of good/great coaching is how you fare against teams with similar talent, or even teams that have more. Can you get the most out of your players. Do you win the games you are supposed to and pull out an occasional suprise from time to time. In 2013 we played 1 team with more talent in Georgia. We played 3 teams with similar talent, Ball State, Ohio, and Rice. We went 2-1. Not bad. The thing is we lost 2 games against teams with less talent in Tulane and UTSA. A good coaching staff could have had that 2013 team at 11-3, 12-2 and ranked in the top 20, with a conference championship.
-
I would also pick great players average coaching. Coaching has to be at least average though. But, I have seen bad coaching totally destroy a team with great athletes. Many times I have seen bad coaching not get the most out of talent. Now if the question were below average coaching with great talent vs great coaching and average talent, I'm taking the average talent and good coaching. I have seen time and time again where a great coach whip a team full of great athletes because they were not disiplined, in the wrong position, lacked fundamentals, and we're not prepared.
-
Very good point. One touch and you are down does take away from his size advantage. I'm not saying he is Big Ben, but it's not crazy to think he can be able to break a tackle and extend a play. We will have to wait to see vs SMU.
-
Did fans check out the Spring game and see this kid? Or maybe I need to go back and look at the spring game again. I'm seeing comments about the Spring game like it wasn't a big deal...I will go back a watch again, but I thought he made some nice catches and some were in very tight coverage. In the 4 years I have been watching UNT he looks like a serious big time threat in the passing game and his performance just flew under the radar. I was putting him down for 100+ and a TD vs SMU... Or maybe I was just seeing things?

MGB: A quick point about attrition since last season
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I think that is possible. Especially if our line isn't blocking well. Shanbour can move around and extend plays. If we start losing early, no need to play seniors who still need development. -
We could beat SMU and Bethune Cookman, and still end up 2-10. Based on the opponents, saying our defense could have a favorable matchup against our first 2 opponents, and starting 2-0 is not really going out on a limb and predicting success. You still not getting that part? and im much older than a 2013 grad. that's just when i started following the program.
-
OK, even though it's kinda weak, AT LEAST YOU HAVE A LEGIT REASON instead of some garbage post. There's hope for you. Even though you are somewhat endorsing a 2-11 SMU team, no one can deny that the SMU coaching staff has a head start, and someone also posted that since the two years we beat them they also beat us in recruiting. Both legit points. thank you. I was still looking for more of a matchup and Xs and Os thing. but it's a start. . that post was about depth. it's right there in the post. The 2013 team had depth issues and almost every fan knows that and complained about not getting young players reps for the following season. Just admit you can't talk sports dude. Its nothing to be ashamed of. Sports isn't everyone's deal, just don't try to ruin it for everyone else.
-
i specifically stated that i am only concentrating on our defense vs SMU and I also mentioned Bethune Cookman. How in the world can that be interpreted as i want to believe this defense is going to be special this year? if anything it's the opposite. It's only focusing on one of the worst teams in FBS in a home game. I have stated twice that i'm not even thinking about the whole season. I also stated that i'm pretty much hoping the defense can buy the offense some time to get things going. if you are not going to care to read or even try to understand the topic of the thread, then stay the _ off the thread man. seriously.
-
you went all off topic. You are the one that stated the defense went against the worst offense in 2015 in the Spring game. Now you bring in Morris, who had nothing to do with UNT 2015 offense. You bring up Littrell, and in 2015 he coached one of the best offenses in college. You brought UNT 2015 offense into this and it is totally irrelevant. New system, new coaches, new QBs, new WRs. And who said anything about this year's being 2013 defense? I have two posts on this thread that specifically states how this defense will look against SMU. SMU, a 2-11 team that our defense looked fairly decent against last year. Its a legitimate SPORTS discussion/question. End of the third we were up 13-10. Even with our horrible defense. we play that SAME team at home that we held to 10 points with an undersized line and playing 10 yards off. now i understand why you only hammer one topic over and over. I give you props for at least trying though. but something tells me you are just mad that someone is trying to discuss sports instead of other topics.
-
I think you need perspective. The offense and coaches from last year are gone. The QBs are gone. same with the defense. I'm sure Morris would have loved to go against last years defense with 10 yard cushions.
-
I agree. I'm not even discussing beating a good team at this point. I'm just thinking about our defense vs SMU and even Bethune Cookman. They shouldn't have a big time power running game that we can't handle. Our defense is going to have to hold it down for a few games until our offense gets going. Based on what I saw, it wouldn't surprise me of the defense could lead us to victory in our first two games.
-
What kind of depth did our 2013 team have on defense? I agree we can't afford any injuries, but in 2013, mac rarely let backups play...which caused many development problems down the line.
-
They are really that good. Maybe, just maybe we have a good defense. Seems like some fans wanted to see morris and the 1st team go out and light up some backups. And if out 1st team would have lined up against that 2nd and 3rd team, they would have destroyed them. Same for our 1st team defense. They would have shut down that 2nd team offense. We have been hearing most of the spring the defense is ahead of the offense. They have a lot of players with experience, and they also needed an upgrade in system and coaching. What are some expecting from the defense against SMU? Defense didn't look bad against them last year, and we had a lame scheme and young players. SMU isn't a smash mouth running team at all. Based on what we have seen, I think we can give the SMU offense lots of trouble.
-
I am hearing he will eventually start at slot. Just a prediction. I guess it is assumed he will be a lot better once he really learns the position. I could see him being a good blocking wr.
