Bryce English Seems Like a Great Kid
GOMG2013 replied to MeanGreenHoops's topic in Mean Green Football
Didn't he graduate? I would hope a UNT degree could get him more than this...unless you mean supervising or owning a waste management company. -
Someone will have to tell me why UTEP is supposed to be good. I think one publication had them going 7-5. Is this the same UTEP that we played last year? The one we could have beaten had the coach not put in certain QBs.

Let's not forget the dependency on camps too. I don't think mac was the issue as much as some think as far as recruiting. There is no way the head coach goes out to every 3, 4, 5 stars house. Schools are plucking 3 and 4 star athletes right out of Fort Bend and the head coach hasn't touched a foot in the area. Skladany and mac both came to fort bend, but I'm sure that was the exception more than common practice. There is no excuse for UNT coaches to not visit DFW area schools. Mac is at fault for allowing the Co ordinators to be lazy. Skladany wasn't going to get out there, and I am sure he told mac that when he was hired. Skladany got results though. In spite of his faults and lack of recruiting, he has "some" success. The problem is that even the younger coaches were lost and learning as they go. They also didn't have the budget to work with like other schools. That will discourage a lot of traveling, even for young and up and coming coaches. Mac is responsible for putting together the staff, so he should get the blame though. If he has weaknesses like age and old fashioned, then he has to hire a staff to balance that out. That is the difference between other old coaches and mac. Mac has done good in some areas of hiring coaches though. Several have moved on to better jobs. Once again though...it's the offensive talent. From a player standpoint and coaching. And Chico was inherited. Not sure if mac would have had the sense to hire an up and coming young guy or one of his old friends though. I'm sure mac didn't tell his coaches to stay home either. Each coach is responsible for his own recruits and his career path.

I agree. The AD, the coaches, AND EVEN UNT FANS overestimated the impact of an upgrade to facilities. I can't speak on the whole defense, but once mac left, the dbs were allowed to play closer and not 10 yards off. They also ran more man. That 10 yards off crap was not brought here by cosh. It was a carryover from skladany. If I had to guess, Cosh probably got the job cause he said he could run skladany's defense without many changes.
-
No doubt Cosh was bad, but there's an OC that gets a pass from the fans and others cause he's a nice guy. Try to make him out to be a hero cause he was an interim twice. And he didn't inherit anything. He was the OC responsible for recruiting and evaluating talent. Then we look at how Harrell is out there grinding...that is how it's supposed to be done. Even if you are only a coordinator and not a head coach. The OC and DC are supposed to be heavily involved in recruiting. It's just easy to blame Mac I guess. And mac had his faults, but the offense has held this team back from wnning more games for at least 5 years. Our defense played good enough to win 3 to 5 games last year. Not great, but Our offense played good enough to win zero.
-
I was going to include 3 win teams, but you know UNT fans...they would act like a 3 win team is light years better than a 1 win team. There's actually more if you include a few 3 win teams.

The last 3 years, 3 G5 teams have made the jump to one of the worst teams in the country, to bowl eligible. Based on this trend, 3 G5 teams will go from horrible to bowling in 2016. I see no reason why UNT can't be in the mix. 2013: UNLV 2 wins to 6...Tulane 2 wins to 7...S alabama 2 wins to 6... 2014: Temple 2 wins to 6...UTEP 2 wins to 7...W Michigan 1 win to 8...memphis 3 wins to 10 2015: Tulsa 2 to 6...UCONN 2 to 6...ga state 1 to 6

Finney came in from JUCO with offers from D1 schools and was DPOY in JUCO. He had a nice Spring game and showed something. He split time at linebacker and had 46 tackles. Not great, but he now has D1 experience. He has a much better chance of having an impact than someone that hasnt played D1 football next year. Like many have said, it takes 2 years for JUCOs to pan out, and Finney is a prime candidate. Jareid Combs is another one that came in with some JUCO hype. He had several offers from D1 schools. He was also in a rotation at DE. I think he battled injuries off and on, but got some decent experience. Both of the guys I listed came in with just as much, or even more JUCO sucess than any of the new adds. Seems like some are writing these old JUCOs off and are ready to plug in the new JUCOs without allowing the ones that have experience to improve in year 2. Finney was robbed of CUSA defensive player of the week by Chico and that offense the last week of the season vs UTEP. Finney forced a fumble that could have lead to at least 3 points, but greer threw a pick 6, and he had a recovery he ran in for a TD. I'm hoping the new Jucos can come in and hit the ground running, but it's hard to put in a guy that has never played over one with experience.

Brooks got picked on last year. That's why he had so much activity. He was a freshman corner. I'm not trying to be biased either and say that Davis is all that and should be avoided. It's really football 101. You pick on the most inexperienced cover guy. Why throw at a vet, when you have guys out there like Brooks and Preston who have never been on a college football field. And they got beat often. Its not even close. The hype about Brooks is that he looked a lot better when tighter coverage was allowed instead of the "mandatory" 10 yard cushion. He looked a lot better in man to man too. He looked good for a freshman and showed lots of potential. Lets not get carried away. He did not look scared out there either. Even when he got beat, he came right back out there with the same enthusiasm. If he continues to improve, Brooks will be a 4 year starter and as a 6 foot corner, he will be looked at as a serious NFL prospect.

It's a popular belief that it takes a transfer player two years to get used to playing D1 football...So many are not counting on our new transfers and expect them to be ready in 2017. But if this transfer/JUCO thing holds true, then should we expect James Gray, Jareid Combs, Courtney Finney, and Thaddeus Thompson to make a significant improvement on what they did last season and become solid D1 starters? Or does this not count for those guys since it would get people's hopes up too high for this year...

This. Not even close. WOW!!!!!!

It was announced about a week ago that homecoming was LaTech.

I'm sure Dickey was a good coach, but to look at today's football landscape and compare it to the early 2000s is just silly. Why do UNT fans fail to realize recruiting has changed? The fans are just as guilty as the UNT AD. 2000s, SMU was horrible and in the WAC. UH was horrible. Baylor was horrible. TCU was in the WAC and they were improving, but not even close to the household name they are now. A&M was very average. Okst had a history of losing. It's not even close. Come on... Not trying to give anyone a pass, but who can't recruit against losers? The biggest problem is UNT didn't capitalize when it had the chance. Probably should have done a lot more damage during that time.

New-look football closes out spring, looks forward to fall
GOMG2013 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Our line is going to be an issue. I haven't seen an air raid where that doesn't come into play. Depends on how you look at it. Morris is bigger, so he may be able to stand in the pocket and absorb more hits too. Shanbour is quick and can get away, but once someone gets a hold of him, it could be over. And when you have a little guy who depends on their quickness to get their game going...once they get gimpy and lose a step...uh oh. A bigger QB can play with more dings. And they are going to get touched on. Even if we have a great line, teams are going to get their shots on our QB/QBs. Our RBs have played against 8, 9, 10 in the box. I think even if our line is bad, they will prefer what we roll out this year. At least if they do hit something, they can take it a whole lot farther. If they can beat some one on one matchups in the passing game, they will open up a whole lot more. I would be willing to bet there's not many CUSA lbs that can stay with Wilson. This may be the only hope to keep teams from coming after our QB.- 18 replies

You are a big supporter of Shanbour, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to hate Morris. BOTH QBS BRING SOMETHING TO THE TABLE. They are both better than anything I have seen in 5 years. (DT may have been nice in this system with these Wr's and RBs) Morris was not slow. Not fast as Shanbour, but that does not make him a statue. He can move good enough. He did not get rid of the ball as fast as Shanbour either, but he was also going against better coverage. Morris was also looking at more downfield and deep sideline throws that takes time to develop. Shanbour was hitting the open man. If Morris wanted to just dink and dunk and get his completion percentage up, he could have done that. They were obviously working on other things. No need to make it seem like Morris had a bad day to make Shanbour look better. Morris DID NOT have a bad day. Shanbour did look better though. But it was against the twos. Take it for what it's worth. I was pleased with both. Based on our WRs, 6'5, 6'2, 6'3...a pocket passer seems to be the best choice. We cant count on those guys getting seperation. They will have to go vertical and go up and get it against one on one matchups. If our line holds up, Morris has the arm to get it to them. Getting the ball to these guys quickly doesn't help their game. We will need to develop some quick and fast slot WRs before we can fully take advantage of the offense and quick decisions. Shanbour brings an ability to extend plays and scramble for first downs. (No he shouldn't be running all over the place like Johnny manziel)...his arm is not horrible based on his high school film. Not as much air under it as Morris though, but he can get it there. If we stall in the red zone like many air raids do, we may need Shanbour to start to bring another element. Morris is going to get first chance though.- 18 replies

GOMG2013 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
An air raid offense usually overmatches a team that is not equipped to cover it, or I gets exposed by a good defense. I am concerned about the OL, but mainly in the redzone. When you run an air raid, there's going to be pressure no matter what. No one is going to sit there and let you pick them apart. The QB has to make quick decisions. The greatest line in the world won't stop teams from finding ways to try to get the QB off rythm. There's only 5 blocking. Teams are going to come off the edge, LB up the middle, etc. There's going to be some teams that we can take advantage of that won't have the personel to stop it. There's going to be some teams with a nice secondary that will shut the passing game down and we look overmatched. We just need to make sure we whip up on the teams that have holes.- 18 replies

UNT's 2016 post-spring depth chart (with comments)
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Buyers may like WR, but i doubt he just volunteered a starting CB spot to play a position that is totally unknown. A CB position that he was fairly decent at. Buyers also played a lot of nickel. Seems like he could have found a spot at safety/nickel. Seems to me it was some kind of "writing on the wall" moment and he moved to WR. Buyers wasn't in love with playing corner, so that part is true. In 2014 he wanted to play safety, but they wouldn't move him. I personally think safety is his spot too. I wouldn't be surprised if he still played somewhere in the secondary from time to time next year. -
We run a 3-3-5 but it can turn into a 4-2-5 depending on where wheeler lines up. And as bad as our defense was, we looked the best when we were in Nickel. There's some teams we won't be able to matchup with at all. A good running team is going to give us trouble no matter what defense we are in. No need to be terrible at stopping the run AND letting teams pass on us. At least in the 3-3-5 if we get teams in 3rd and long, we can get off the field instead of watching teams convert with our 10 yard cushions and LBs trying to cover slots and RBs. There's some teams that a 3-3-5 will match up pretty good with. We are in CUSA and there's not many teams that can just line up and smash you. The teams that have a strong running game, we will be forced to make the right play call and make sure the defense is lined up to stop it. This is where the DC will have to earn his paycheck with the playcalling. From what i have been hearing and reading, we won't have a set base defense like the past years. There's going to be actual plays called on defense.

UNT's 2016 post-spring depth chart (with comments)
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
So assuming they are good is stupid because we never seen them in action. Assuming wins is also stupid and premature. Ok. Cool. So if we follow this logic that assuming is stupid, then since we never saw them play, assuming failure and losses would also be... -
UNT's 2016 post-spring depth chart (with comments)
GOMG2013 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
So based on this comment, that would be Morris...right? Since Morris has been the one getting him the ball all Spring. Can I put you down for Team Morris? That's what this is coming down to for some...Team Morris...Team Shanbour... I'm personally thinking about Team UNT90 and hating both of them aND everything. Depending on how his t shirts look...
