  1. Cement landing doesn't help matters either.
  2. Asked. Coach Canales came up with the idea. His son reached out via DM on Twitter. Talked to Chico on the phone who said "I'd like to have you come out with us, get the crowd pumped up and set the tone" True story. Also jumped last year vs, SMU but that was Chico again saying "get down here" so we could get a picture together. That was not planned, but had to go celebrate with Chico, the players, and the students. Still limping, darn near broke foot, but totally worth it. Truth be told, Chico and his son reached out to me to ask about doing it vs. WKU as his first game as coach. It was shot down by the AD but approved for Halloween. Chico sees MGM as a spirited fan who supports the team through good times and bad. The AD sees MGM as a sideshow that can be allowed to participate on a day specifically for weird guys in costumes. The AD didn't bother to tell their security. MGM was asked for his on-field clearance by security after running out with the team and going to the student side to pump up the crowd. It was a bit disheartening after the entrance to be escorted off field by security. At least they didn't have dogs on MGM like last Halloween.
  3. Major Applewhite As a player, he was undersized but showed guts and determination while be on the Horns' roster at the same time as Chris Simms, son of a NFL legend. No quit in him and he's up for a challenge. Set a whole lot of records at UT, most of which have been surpassed, but still. Wasn't biggest, strongest, fastest recruit, not highly touted, won't come here and say it's slowest, smallest team he's ever seen, but rather coach em up. Will fight through adversity. Bill Belichick signed him as a UDFA and Nick Saban made him his first OC at Bama. Stamp of approval from arguably best coaches at pro & college level. Strong Texas ties Has a strong passing & rushing attack in Houston. Houston QB Ward has said great things about him, seems like he could be a great QB developer, game is all about the QB. Appears to be a player's coach Currently making $300,000 would offer $900,000 and triple his pay. I've been told he could put together a strong staff. Running a spread/up-tempo offense in Houston based around power run-game. Reportedly applied for SMU job, wants to be a coach. Think he could put together a respectable recruiting class in a short amount of time.
  4. That would be a first for us in CUSA. We hosted MUTS in 2013 but didn't go there in 2014. We hosted both Florida schools last year but don't go to either this year. Granted, there has been conference realignment in both of those years. Will be interesting to see what happens as far as scheduling goes. Key will be the right staff that can develop Smith's passing game as our rushing attack should be best in CUSA next year. I'm hoping for $1 million and an increase for assistants, they'll be able to put together a quality staff. If they don't, you're right...
  5. I think we get to bowl eligibility next year. 3 OOC games (SMU, Army & Bethune) are winnable. UTSA, UTEP, Rice are winnable. We drew the top 3 teams from CUSA East this year. It's likely we'll have F_U, Charlotte & Old Dominion. All winnable. Young players are getting experience now and that will help.
  6. From Vito's blog last night: "In other news, I was told today that UNT has not gotten to the point where it is interviewing candidates for its football job, not even over the phone. "
  7. It doesn't matter. I said, you'll get your wish. He'll be gone and RV will make the hire. I'm a fan of the man, I hope RV is able to bring someone in here who is better suited for the job. Looking forward to locking the gate one final time on November 28
  8. Tell me what to expect. Please. I know what we have in Chico, personally, I love it. He gets it. He's a player's coach, he's fun to watch on the sidelines, he loves this program and its fans. You think Briles is leaving his Dad and one of the top offenses in the country to come here? The offensive coordinators at TCU have turned down P5 offers according to this board. Major Applewhite, good name, does he have what it takes? Is he even interested? It's a gamble. Throw out any name and there is a ? At the end of the day, I have this feeling that Chico is gone. You and many others will get your wish. My fear is Canales will get his shot somewhere else, show his passion, energy, creativeness and make an impact. He would be a great coach for a lot of programs, why not us? Also, parting ways with Chico means you are putting your faith in RV to make the next great hire. I would think you of all people would be against that. Make Chico the coach. Give DaMarcus one more year in his system so he doesn't have to learn yet another system. Give him the chance he's earned to lead this program. He won't fail. He works too hard. If he does, by that time RV should be gone and a new athletic director can attract a new coach. You know as well as I do coaches aren't flocking to come work under RV.
  9. He became the coach last month #HireChico
  10. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/headlines/20151101-best-in-texas-breakdown-112-two-extremely-close-races-win-gets-north-texas-out-of-last-place.ece No longer the worst team in Texas according to Dallas Morning News. UTKFC is the new bottom dweller!
  11. "North Texas’ players and a few fans hoisted Mike Canales on their shoulders late Saturday night" Come on now Brett, it's pretty clear that was just one Mean Green Man ;) S/O to Jalen Montgomery for the assist
  12. I thought McCarney was pretty awesome then. That didn't stop me from raising an eyebrow when I heard RV gave him a long extension. That was a head scratcher, but made a little more sense when I understood doing so meant him getting an extension himself.
  13. Contract expires February 2018. A little less than 2 1/2 years away
  14. I do recall that. When you say "RV wanted nothing to do with it" are you referring to the young alumni section or that students weren't allowed there any longer?
  15. "Bachelor's Degree and five years of combined experience in coaching football at the NFL or NCAA Level required. Experience in recruiting at the collegiate level and the ability to interact with the general public. The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: * Master's Degree" Wow, didn't think I'd be a candidate but I have a bachelor's & master's... I can interact with the public, generally... I also have years of coaching experience at both levels and won several championships as well as achieved the highest rated recruiting class in the nation.* *That is of course if you count EA Sports videogames Greg better update his coach tracker on Mean Green Nation, a new leader has emerged!
  16. Excellent post Harry. I wholeheartedly agree. I actually think this is an attractive job since despite the dismal season, next year has me feeling really good. All the pieces are there to go bowling next year and contend in CUSA West. Florida is only OOC game we have a very little to no shot of winning. SMU, Army & Bethune are all winnable. We won't have to play the 3 top teams from CUSA East. We'll actually have a bye week mid-season. DaMarcus is getting experience, he'll have the entire offseason to get familiar with a new system. The coach will also be able to recruit "his guy" as well and have him in here to compete after next year. We're not losing much on the O-line, Thompson & Banogu are the only seniors in the group. Miles and Murray are young, they'll only get better. Murray is a monster of a man... J-Will is something special, as has been pointed out numerous times. Plenty of weapons that to throw to, will need TE's to step up. Gray and McClain make for a solid safety duo. Corners are young, but getting experience this year. If new Coach brings in new D Coordinator, we won't line up 10 yards off WRs and may actually give em a chance to make some place. We aren't losing much on the D-Line or at LB. There may be better replacements for Orr, Bean & Wallace. Harrison is 60 lbs heavier and McNair should be a beast. Any candidate should be able to see this type of potential and recognize there is a strong chance here for early success. This makes the job even more attractive since taking this team to a bowl or CUSA Championship game next year would give this coach instant credibility among the fanbase, media, and most importantly, recruits. It would also help him build his resume for future offers as I do hope our next coach is hired away by a powerhouse P5 school that throws an insane amount of money at him and would reverse the "graveyard" trend.
  17. Then how bout "Jimmy John's, Jimmy John's, Jimmy John's" Oh wait, we're supposed to "give that a rest". My bad, everyone "Sweater vest, sweater vest, sweater vest!"
  18. We'll have home games against La Tech and Southern Miss since they are in our division of CUSA. No guarantee of playing Marshall, MUTS, and/or WKU. Depends on which teams from the other division we draw. Hopefully it's Charlotte, F_U and Old Dominion.
  19. False A win over UTSA knocks them out of bowl eligibility and ensures they won't be doing anything different than us during bowl season. A win gives us bragging rights over them for a year, but more importantly may help silence them. A win drags them down to the bottom of CUSA, and gives us a shot at not finishing dead last. A win would do a lot for the psyche of this team & fan base. A win will give a little redemption for them coming in and beating us in 2013 with so much on the line for us. This doesn't feel like just another game to me, it feels like a must-win #BeatUTSA
