Are Rice Fans Too Smart for Their Own Good?
meangreener replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm likely attending Rice for graduate school and I love it. The taunting they do is brilliant. Sorry. -
I guess. I can't believe we've fallen this far that we're on the same level as UTSA.

I drive down 35W every day to work and there's some substantial hills across from Apogee.

What Power5 Big Time School Would U Bring To Apogee ?
meangreener replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Because 2 and 1s are ways 4 game home schedules happen. -
I would love this as our pregame, just with our conference mates...and leaving DFW out of it.
-
It really pisses me off that our fight song isn't in it. We have alumni who work on the game which is why Apogee is so incredible and we were in the commercials/trailers last year...which means our administration is the reason. Not laziness or lack of care from EA.

I don't think there's any worth in even bothering to market to the northern suburbs. These are stuck up snobs who really only care about TCU and UT...they relate to them because the people there are shallow and only like things that are bright, new and shiny (or rolling in $.) UNT should focus on "NORTH TEXAS" and make us North Texas's team. Not DFW. I've been wondering why we don't for years now.

I just...it seems to me like this year is our last chance to make a splash or suffer in the catacombs of the NCAA for another 5-7 (possibly 10) years. Our team is turning over this year and will be considerably different next year...likely not better. Fairly worrisome. Our schedule will attract a lot of people to the stadium...keep them there. Students and alumni will likely show up for big attendance numbers because of conference change and the opponents. Losing isn't going to help. I think less than five wins puts Mac on a very hot seat going into next year, and I really don't want to start over...I don't think UNT can stand it. Our recruiting is already terrible, it's only going to get worse if we continue to get NO results...the Apogee factor is already gone. I feel like this is the make or break year for UNT and personally, I don't see how we won't be considerably better...we were beating up WKU last year, showed a lot of potential versus K-State, easily could've beat Troy...that's 7-5...and we have marked improvement EVERYWHERE across the board with a far weaker schedule. 7-5 should be expected. We haven't regressed anywhere, really...maybe O-line, marginally... I don't think our fanbase can sustain getting passed up by UTSA and Texas State. Just my opinion, but this year is just really vital. New conference, new fans, new opponents, and a better team. I just worry that we could end up stuck in the bottom of a conference everyone wants out of with CUSA or stuck among a bunch of FCS upstarts because we can't produce. Personally, I'm tired of defending UNT football to everyone I know who ridicules me for my devotion.

Love it. Have it hanging in my main room, bought it for $30 at Voertman's. The very first time I saw it, I loved it and had to have one. I see it around on cars, etc. Most people like it, I really wish we'd make it a secondary logo. The university really has been embracing it, too, recently. At the games, at events, etc. It's on the flagpoles on both sides of the Union. I have a car flag with it. Definitely my favorite UNT related item. Love Texas, love UNT. Works both ways. Will definitely have one hanging outside my house when I graduate during football season.

SMU will not win over 5.5 games this season
meangreener replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This thread is just awful. Our obsession with SMU is laced with inferiority complex, but I don't know what "inferiority", considering SMU sucks. But it's ridiculous. -
Oh, well, at least they're not with us anymore. The point still stands.

This is why I'm glad we're out of CUSA. A lot of classless schools that are just embarrassing to have in the stadium.

Where'd you play high school football and when?
meangreener replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
You're from Beaumont? Explains a lot. Anyway, played junior high and two years of high school JV at Keller HS and Clear Creek HS in League City, TX s a WR and CB. Not built for football, wasn't good, but fast so I caught a few big passes.- 61 replies

I know that we've had some run ins with the law lately but I do love that McCarney only pulls in good upstanding men who get their academic situation under control. Love it. I'd rather have a bad team full of smart real men then a good team full of thugs. At the Troy game, those kids were some of the trashiest people I've ever encountered. Trying to fight the student section...'grills', just acting like thugs. Shameful to Troy. You're here to learn first, play second. In my opinion. Many schools have it backward.

...no idea...probably, though... I've flown Spirit before........ .......DO NOT FLY SPIRIT...

Are you talking about this year or the future, specifically? Berglund is our QB of the future, no doubt.
-
I can't believe they have Derek so high. Not to mention we have some solid WRs now. Whatever.

I have friends who have together attended UNT for about 20 years altogether...they agree that student attendance is higher than ever so there is no "history" to point back to.

Who gets the most bang for their recruiting buck?
meangreener replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Is it bad that, honestly, unless we get this thing going in the right direction, I have no guarantee I'll be interested in 4-5 years? I'll still be proud alum, but actively following the football team...not too sure. -
I think our student attendance will ultimately result in a continuing rise in attendance. Sure, the last game is usually poorly attended by the students, but we outclass pretty much every peer when it comes to student attendance. As these students graduate, they'll end up on the alumni side and that bodes VERY well for the future. Look at the Texas Southern, Troy and ULL games. There were SO many students at the ULL game. It gets me excited for our future. And now let's win. I think it's a combination of attracting mostly first choice UNT students, a student body that mostly lives in Denton, a surprising amount of school spirit and the new stadium. Spirit has risen every year since I came here, and so much more than when some older alums I know...that's why it excites me if we'd win a few games...our attendance would skyrocket quickly. Students love UNT. My Freshman year there was a bit of school spirit but now there's so much and I really feel privileged to see it evolve as it has.

NT also usually has excellent student attendance, which is why our average attendance will continue to go up every year as they graduate.

Who gets the most bang for their recruiting buck?
meangreener replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This is disgusting. For a school this size in an area like we are to have a recruiting budget this low makes me really sick. Almost makes you just give up. Fighting an uphill battle. But, I mean, when people say "UNT sucks at football", statistics like this prove that we do. Look at that company. Terrible academic schools, small, in small cities excluding Northern Illinois. Tired of this crap. While I realize it's about who you recruit not how much you spend in recruiting, our recruiting sucks, too, which makes it painful.
