HBU QB Bailey Zappe Enters the Portal
BillySee58 replied to MGNation92's topic in Mean Green Football
This would be perfect. He could play P5 if he wanted, but not sure how the market is going to shake out. With many players transferring it’s hard to really get a good grip on where everyone is going to land. Are some P5 quality players going to be available because there aren’t enough spots? Are guys who we think will be in our range going to go P5 because they are valuing transfers more, especially seniors since they don’t count towards the 85 scholarship team limit? -
Mean Green to Myrtle Beach Bowl (Official)

vs. App State, per Brett McMurphy

Even if you factor those in as turnovers, Bean is still turning it over at a higher rate. It’s close, but Bean has a higher turnover rate and combined fumbles plus picks rate.
-
May want to check your meme, which said turnovers. 2 fumbles LOST and 4 picks. 2 fumbles were not lost, just as Bean has a fumble that we recovered. Bean actually has a higher turnover rate.
-
He has 6 turnovers. Bean has 5, with about 90 less dropbacks.

Potential Transfers from the Current Team
BillySee58 replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
You said the answer to your original question of “How many games have we won that Aune started?” was zero. Saying we didn’t win any games started by Aune would be saying Bean gets the credit as starting QB of record in the win against both MTSU and UTEP. Yeah I don’t care about that either. I don’t need my team’s QB pretending to be ecstatic while the other QB is taking his job away, so long as he is being a good teammate overall. Bean’s body language “issue” is a nonfactor as far as I’m concerned. Does he give us the best chance to win games with what he’s done on the field? That’s what matters to me. And going into this offseason that’s all that matters as we weigh potential transfers against what we have. -

So Bean gets credit for both the MTSU win where Aune started and the UTEP win where Bean started but only played two plays? Aune technically started the MTSU game even though Bean clearly was the difference maker, just as Aune was the one leading the scoring against UTEP after Bean started. Also don’t think QB wins is much of a tool to evaluate when we have so much more direct material on their actual play. With the yards and points we scored against Charlotte and USM, don’t we beat them if our defense plays like it did against Rice? He just had 5 TDs passing and 1 TD rushing with no turnovers, and you can’t bring yourself to give him any credit, while saying his number 1 trick is turning the ball over. When Aune throws a TD to Darden, it’s all credit to Aune, but what about when Darden scores on two catches made behind the line of scrimmage and he makes multiple defenders miss last week with Bean? There’s definitely an argument for going with Bean next season, but this stuff here is biased to the point of knocking one QB for something and giving credit to the other QB for the same accomplishment. -

What were the differences in the offensive system we ran last night and last year’s system? -
DRC: UNT will be without two key players against UTEP

Radio broadcast said his ankle was bothering him. Played in the first series but that was it. -
Right. I’d argue Aune is already ahead of any DT season besides his senior year, but at his age it’s easy to see less year to year improvement than guys in their early 20s.

Yeah sounds reminiscent of Fine’s last high school game. At least from an offensive standpoint. -
Potential Transfers from the Current Team

I think we could win games with Bean in very similar fashion to how we beat Rice. Ball control offense, don’t turn it over, and hit short passes opened up by the running game. We could re-design the offense to better suit him, but at the end of the day we are limiting ourselves if the QB is limited in what passes we call, and that was the case with Bean. We have also done a tremendous job signing top high school wide receiver talent because of what our offense has been and the numbers our receivers have put up. With Bean there just doesn’t seem to be enough passes to go around. Not sure there are with Aune either, but whoever our QB is next year needs to be able to get the ball in the hands of all those weapons we have signed. -

For a little context, in the pregame show Dave Barnett asked about Jason Bean and said something to Littrell along the lines of “You mentioned Bean played well and took some steps forward last week. Could you tell us what you saw that encouraged you?” And Littrell replied with something along the lines of “Well, he did a good job managing the offense and reading the defense, and he had a good week in practice BUT Aune also had a really good week of practice. Really two good straight weeks of practice. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see both tonight.” When I heard that it made me believe there was going to be intention to play both guys early tonight. Maybe it was because of the depleted UTEP secondary, maybe it was because he gave Darden a better shot at breaking the records, but it seems Aune was always going to get a big chance in this game and Littrell probably felt he was earning it throughout the night. -
Yup, I agree. In the last three games where Aune was the primary QB (USM, Charlotte, UTEP), Simpson put up 13 catches for 305 yards. When Bean was at QB, he was only ever able to get Darden involved.
-
@97and03asked the question earlier if he could be similar to Derek Thompson. I could see that as well. Not guys you want chucking the ball around 40 times a game, or trying to win you shoot outs, but guys who can hit deep balls and give you good enough play coupled with a good defense and run game. And we should have that run game. I feel alright knowing we at least have that at the QB position next year. All eyes shift to defense for the offseason, and fixing that mess.
-
Jordan Rucker was ahead of him before he opted out, Upton Stout was ahead of him when healthy, Gaddie was pushed to safety but is probably back at CB with full health, and we’re getting this guy transferring in https://247sports.com/player/logan-wilson-46040840/ But I agree with you. He’s right there with some of the other guys who seem to never get pulled.
-
Aune could at least be a decent backup. You’re capable of running your full offense with him, the question is just how effective will he be. First time since SMU that he really a solid rushing attack and it looked good. Hopefully Ogunmakin is either far improved or we get in a position where we don’t have to rely on him as much with other guys coming in, some younger guys getting better (Detraveon Brown), plus Shorter back. Defensively, it’s on Littrell to make the right call. Does Bowen deserve a chance to get a full offseason and spring, or do we just need to go a different direction? Is COVID really a legitimate excuse (probably)? Littrell needs to feel the heat to make the right call.
-
Whitlock probably doesn’t crack the rotation next year.
-
Completely agree
-
Exactly. We’ve seen him produce. But he can’t play like this if we want to do anything.
-
Not to mention missed a layup to start the game. He’s 5-31 (16%) in these last three games.
-
In the first half we were doing well with JJ Murray in, but not because Murray was in. Mccasland confuses the two from time to time.
