Being able to put himself in position to play and be the guy that early at UNC is very encouraging. That alone has me thinking he will be the guy this season.

I didn’t say he was injury prone. I was just explaining how he qualified for the medical redshirt.

In order to get a medical redshirt you need to prove you missed enough of two separate seasons due to injury. Ruder had injuries in 2018 and 2019. 2018 he broke his collarbone against Ga Tech and 2019 had the broken leg that El Paso Eagle mentioned.

Ryan Finley graduated from Boise State then grad transferred to NC State where he was the starter for 3 seasons. Similar to Ruder he had a couple injuries at Boise that allowed him to be granted a 6th season. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/ryan-finley-1.html

Yeah I think 3 of his first 4 passes are incompletions. That’s a first from tapes I’ve seen, and they were good passes. In projecting high school QBs I want to see that completion % hovering around 60 for a high school QB, and the TD/INT ratio hopefully at least close to 3:1. Struggling to hit 50% and being under 2:1 on TD/INT ratio in all of his seasons as a starter is concerning if I’m looking at it from an unbiased standpoint, which I am. You always give a little leeway for having subpar receivers and/or bad coordinators, but his numbers weren’t pretty even accounting for some things working against him. Doesn't mean he won’t be good or that he will be inaccurate, but those numbers are concerning and it’s important to look at the body of work from a QB and not just the highlights, since every highlight film is going to make it seem like accuracy isn’t an issue. Like I said, take this commitment everyday of the week. Whether it’s a 2-star, 3-star or 4-star, no other offers or a bunch of P5 offers, I try to keep bars like that consistent for all of them, then add context.

Looking at his high school stats, they aren’t eye-popping like most P5 QB Signees, especially against pretty tame competition. His completion percentage in his 3 seasons as a full-time starter were: 45.7%, 50.8%, and 48.1%. His best season was his junior season where he threw for 1,598 yards with 14 TDs against 8 INTs on 50.8% completion. We temper our expectations on Bryce Drummond and his 72.5% completion this season because it was against small OK schools. Ruder struggled to get over 50% against small KS schools. Ruder’s rushing stats were pretty solid including going for 1,032 rushing yards his senior season. Good news is we are getting him in his fourth year of college football and still have up to four seasons remaining, so strives should be expected. He clearly has the skills you can’t teach and throws a good ball. Not defending the move but Passwaters went from GA to Quality Control coach to now a position coach. That, preceded by a D1 playing career, is the standard path to becoming a D1 position coach. When Littrell was hired, his first receiver coach was Joel Filani, who was also coming off of his one and only season as a QC Coach at Washington State, and was a grad assistant prior to that. I completely get the frustration at him being an in-law, and I definitely agree that more qualified candidates exist, but going from a QC Coach to a position coach is how it works. Having a QC title means you are qualified to try and make that jump to position coach.
