‘21 G Matthew Stone - Kingfisher (OK)
BillySee58 replied to jdennis82's topic in UNT Basketball Recruiting
I’m hoping he can be like James Reese. Stone is 6’4”, has some solid athleticism, and can shoot threes well. Doesn’t have to be overly capable at creating his own shot if he does those things well, similar to Reese. I don’t get the Morgan pickup either, but hoping he can bring some energy and athleticism to the table. From the little film I have seen it has mainly just been dunks, not much showcasing skills like a post-up game. But if he can do the dirty work then that will do. -
He was huge. They didn’t respect his shooting and sagged off on him and he made them pay.

Great win! Furthest we have advanced since the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Finals appearance. Last four standing are probably the four best teams and four strongest programs in CUSA right now. Should be great basketball coming tomorrow.
-
Terrible mental lapse. Even more frustrating after Hamlet getting whacked on his way to the basket with yet another no call in that type of situation
-
Definitely. Also, if McBride could step up and just give us a solid 8 points a night and be a respectable three-point threat that would go a long way in helping out Hamlet, Reese, Bell, and Simmons.
-
Any news on additional players for this class?

JUCO football season starts this month. Could see new offers going out to guys who have standout seasons. Otherwise yeah, probably just D1 transfers over the summer to round things out.- 1 reply

If Javion plays like this I feel confident we will at least be in it at the end of the game against anyone.
-
Please don’t speak this possibility into existence.
-
Completely agree. I just don’t understand why he uses scholarships on guys who can’t shoot, then can’t trust those guys on the court because of that. Surrounding Hamlet with Reese, Gibson, Draper, and Smart (to a degree), plus having a potent stretch-four in Bell was lethal last year. We had an incredibly efficient offense because we had an elite penetrator surrounded by plus shooters. Recruiting has gotten better, but that needs to continue. I’d rather see us go into a season short a guy or two than give those scholarships to guys who will tie up that scholarship for 2-4 years and never become rotation players.

Something to keep in mind with McBride, while his percentage was good at his JUCO, he didn’t take a ton of threes. He only took 3.5 threes per game, so while his percentage was good he didn’t have the volume to really solidify the legitimacy there. The year before he shot more threes and only made 33.6%. Translating 3-pt shooting numbers to the next level is a lot more trustworthy when the volume is there to go with it. James Reese was taking close to 6 a game at Odessa in his JUCO season. I think McBride does have a green light, but he has really struggled against CUSA and higher opponents. He was lighting it up early when the space to shoot was big, then has really struggled hitting open 3s when the close out defender gets close. That’s the shot you have to hit at this level. Hoping he is more ready for that next year, as he should be now with some CUSA experience.

Our bench plus McBride combined to score a whopping 9 points this weekend. 9 points scored by guys not named Hamlet, Reese, Bell, and Simmons. A colossal indictment on our recruiting. Jahmiah Simmons has taken up a scholarship on our roster for 4 straight years. Wise took up a scholarship the last 3. We have two guys under 6 feet tall who can’t shoot taking up scholarships, which wouldn’t be as bad if they were our 12th and 13th players, but they aren’t. The only 4 guys on this roster who score are all seniors. Mccasland needs to get real with this roster and stop filling it with guys who can’t shoot, especially when he can’t put these guys on the court because of their lack of offensive ability.
-
Ooh, lot to get in here but for now will just say Mccasland’s style is to play slow and work for a good shot later in the shot clock. Comes back to bite us with the turnovers that come as a result of holding onto the ball so long and not playing decisively early in the shot clock. And with not a lot of shot makers on the roster puts a lot of pressure on a few guys to make shots that are often less than ideal when up against the shot clock.

North Texas 44 - UAB 48 7:55 2nd Half Big run by us going, fueled by some forced turnovers and Hamlet and Bell finishing on the offensive end
-
I can’t rationalize some of the things we are doing on the offensive end this year. Why is 5’11” JJ Murray our guy in the middle of the floor in attacking the zone? Same swinging the ball around the perimeter again as well. Hearing Mccasland talk basketball, he is a really smart guy. I don’t get how these are the decisions he lands on though.

Right now we are being led in scoring pretty clearly by the 4 seniors we returned from our rotation last year. Hamlet, Reese, Simmons, and Bell. After that, the scoring options have been rough. Our team outside of those 4 shot 2-14 (14%) from the floor last night with just 6 points. We could get into why, or ask if they can turn things around, but unless these guys play better we won’t be able to keep up with the top teams in conference. Even more worrying is if those 4 seniors decide to grad transfer for their extra year of eligibility. We need much more out of these players. Here are their scoring averages in conference play: Mardrez McBride - 5.8 points, 37.5% shooting and 28.3% 3-pt shooting Rubin Jones - 5.3 points, 32.8% shooting and 37.1% 3-pt shooting JJ Murray - 3.8 points, 42.4% shooting and 37.5% 3-pt shooting (just 26.7% shooting and 22.2% 3-pt shooting in his last 7 games) Terence Lewis - 3.0 points, 48% shooting Abou Ousmane - 2.5 points, 52% shooting For perspective, these guys are replacing Gibson, Geu, Draper and Smart in our rotation. Those guys last year gave us 29.7 points a game, while the guys above are only giving us 20.4 points a game, on less efficient shooting.
-
Yeah I don’t think it has anything to do with being in a “doghouse” as much as it does just earning trust. Lewis plays, just not all that much because Simmons and Bell play a lot and we actually have a backup 5 too in Ousmane. Last year we only had 3 rotation bigs, so Bell was in off the bench anytime either one of our starting bigs was sitting. This year with Ousmane backing up Simmons, Lewis’ only opportunity to play is when Bell sits, and Bell has been better so that’s only when he needs rest. Definitley agree on Robinson. He has great size and athleticism and he has some skill to go with it. He is a capable shooter too. Would hate to see a guy like that leave because we wouldn’t play him over a player who was less athletic, less of a shooter, and 8 inches shorter.
-
In conference play McBride is shooting 37.5% from the field and 28.3% from three. He hasn’t been the ball handler or secondary creator we had hoped for, and he hasn’t been the off-ball shooter either. Very disappointing. Lewis is giving us just 3 points and 2 rebounds a game in conference play. We just are not a deep team, in large part because they have fallen very short of the guys they were replacing in the rotation. Yes, unfortunately. Murray hasn’t even been that big an asset defensively lately, and we expect him to be a liability on offense at 5’11” and not much of a shooter or ball handler. Mccasland has to do better in recruiting.
-
And we have to go through WKU and La Tech. Playing like this, yikes.
-
We are not as good as our conference record showed and it was bound to catch up with us.
-
Hamlet jacking threes to get us back in the game worked last game. Not so well today. 1-7 from deep for him.
-
Agreed. ZERO bench points!
-
IMO one does (Matthew Stone), one probably doesn’t (Crisdon Morgan). Recruiting is getting there, and we really need to finish this season strong so that it stays that way between now and when next season starts. Kind of like football, working off of a decent run in recruiting classes, need to keep it going to really sustain success.
-
I feel like this is pretty much the team we have been all season. Play better some games, worse in others, but we just don’t have the talent level that allows us to separate all that much.
-
McBride 3-pt shooting percentage in conference play is down to 29%. Really disappointing.
-
Sad to hear. RIP to him and condolences to his family.
