I agree with almost all of your statement. My one question is what more does Jimmerson have to do to emerge as a feature back? Legitimate question, not a smart-ass rhetorical one.
-
Height as in Tony Romo was not even 6' coming out of high school so he wasn't very developed and was not recruited. I'm gonna have agree to disagree about the arm strength and release. DT's arm comes down very low when he throws, which severely slows his release. I've never heard anyone say DT has a strong arm but that is an opinion. I think that's awesome that you think so highly of OUR qb, I just don't. Like I said, I think he can be very effective like he was tonight and I'm going to continue to support him as long as he's wearing the Green and White.
-
I think successful and special are two VERY different things but that is my opinion. He absolutely can be successful, as he was tonight. He played within his game and as a result he was very effective.
-
There are always exceptions, but Tony didn't get recruited because of his height. He has a cannon and a quick release. DT has neither of those so I wouldn't expect to see him on Sundays anytime soon but that doesn't mean he can't be successful with us.
-
Hey man, we can have two different definitions of special. He did great tonight and that will likely be his job from here on out, completing the short and sometimes intermediate range passes. Canales knows DT is not a deep ball qb but he recognizes this and really called the right routes tonight.
-
Unfortunately Thompson has struggled mightily throwing the ball down field. There's a reason Thompson didn't get recruited by anyone else, besides the fact that he went to a small high school, and that is because his arm strength is pretty pedestrian for a D-1 qb. Canales is going to have to be creative to keep defenses honest.

Yes Jimmerson does not have breakaway speed but that isn't his game. I wouldn't say he got caught from behind tonight, the guy had the angle so give him a little more credit. To be 219 lbs at 5'9" is pretty dang big for a running back, especially a redshirt freshman. His strength is using his low center of gravity mixed with keeping his legs churning after contact. This allows him to break tackles and make people miss even if he isn't going to outrun many people. He has looked faster than Byrd for sure this year and yards-per-carry wise he is kicking his butt. People on this board have not-so-discretely likened him to Emmitt Smith and the reason is not because of his body of work at this point but rather his running style. Emmitt didn't have blazing breakaway speed either but he did have a similar running style to Jimmerson and was very successful to say the least.

If neither Coleman nor Mitchell are able to be on the floor Patton should almost assuredly be on the floor because of his rebounding skills.
-
Come on man. No need for either of you two to make this personal just because you have two separate opinions
-
Missing an extra point makes that question very hard to answer

Don't know that I'd call him special, but capable I think more accurately describes DT. The intermediate and long passing game is just not good to put it lightly, so I think calling him special is a major stretch. As long as he plays within his game, which is short passes, he can be effective. His performance tonight definitely gives me a lot of hope going forward.
-
That is his game. DT is very accurate on short routes like slants and hitches so we should continue to run those type of plays. Canales called a great game tonight, just wish he could've given more touches to Jimmerson. Thompson struggles throwing the ball down field so our big plays will likely come from getting Chancellor in space and getting Jimmerson the ball. Dude breaks tackles and makes people miss so easily if we can keep blocking the way we have been he is a big play waiting to happen.
-
Awesome! I, for one, am very interested to see the numbers he puts up this year. Hopefully he can play a ton this year and get all the game experience he can. I appreciate the updates in advance!

Everyone knows life isn't fair. By all means everyone is entitled their opinion, but the FACT is that it happened so can we please move past this? Unrighteous occurrences will happen for the rest of humanity but you have to move on eventually. Sorry to sound like a philosopher but nothing is going to bring Trey back so let's just let it be what it is, because nothing can be done to change it at this point except arguing around in a circle.
-
It was honestly getting frustrating watching Byrd get so many carries. Any other back we have would've have been tackled for a loss on Jimmerson's touchdown. We NEED to get Jimmerson the ball more and I don't see why he wouldn't start next week. He really looks like a gamebreaker and, while they are great guys from what I've heard, Byrd is slow and plain as a runner and J Brown is indecisive and small. Byrd could be effective as a short yardage running back if Jimmerson gets gassed and Brown can be effective in the passing game as a blocker and receiver. Jimmerson really has looked special with his strength and elusiveness and I love the way he keeps his legs moving.

Well, Alzee Williams is our only senior for the 2013-2014 season so we only have one scholarship for the 2014 class. Better make it count, and Benford would be making it count with this kid.
-
Everytime it looks like it's going to die down, it starts back up. It is what it is but I love the way Benford is trying to build this team from the inside out in recruiting. Guards slip through the cracks but coveted big guys can be hard to land.
-
I've seen worse thread derailments. Says the guy who started it. I can't wait to see what numbers he puts up this year for his varsity team. Sorry if that last sentence was completely off subject.
-
There are always exceptions and Alzee was a pleasant one, which is great! But he has always had the size to be productive, plus he had players graduate so he naturally moved up the depth chart and took advantage of it. This theory is just what I have seen over the years generally and there are always exceptions but most, not nearly all, players per minute averages as a freshman are indicative of what their future will hold.
-
At the risk of sounding like a smart-ass, it's basketball so height matters, even at point guard. There are always exceptions but height is a big advantage in many aspects of the game. He was buried last year even with jones and williams out and before we added hardwick and taylor so all indications were that he was buried. Just going off what I heard/read. I don't know what would have happened but it is what it is. Yeah it does look like Jordan Williams might be an inch taller which is awesome! I know you're a fan and I'm glad you and others fan can't wait for this season because I sure can't and we are ridiculously stacked.

Yes please. My bad for reopening this pandora's box, but to each his own and Go Mean Green.

I know his scholarship was renewed, unfortunately that was before Taylor came on board which I know makes it seem even more unjust. I really wish we had another scholarship for him because he really seemed to like it here and always looked happy on campus. I don't like the way it happened at all but I understand why Benford did it and I hope you guys can at some point. He is our coach and he needs full support from our fan base even if we disagree with how he has handled this situation. About my academic scholarships quote/argument/theory, that was meant to apply to general students who are on academic scholarship and underperform in the classroom, not athletes. As for your argument MeanGreenTexan, I understand he was a freshman but college basketball is a sport where you can tell early on who is going to end up being a player. Basketball is not like football where a player can make tremendous physical growth in a few years since height generally does not change much after you arrive on campus. It's more about honing your skills. I don't see how Trey's numbers and contributions to this team would have gotten that much better, especially with how buried he was going to be. I know I left a lot to disagree with, and that's fine it's your opinion, but I HATE the way this happened too and I really do hope the best for Trey. I just choose to look at it from Coach Benford's perspective and support him along with all the current players. I know you guys are all huge fans too, but I just don't see the point in staying sour about something that is done. Argue all you want, just please support the whole team including Coach Benford once the season starts.
-
People who think Benford is a terrible guy for what happened with Trey, can we all remember that JJ "promised" Trey the full ride, not Benford? It also seems very probable that coach Benford did everything he could to make sure Trey got a scholarship somewhere else. I was born in Tennessee so I have followed the UT Vols my whole life, and their current head coach Derek Dooley has made an interesting point. If a kid comes to school on an academic scholarship and can't maintain his/her GPA nobody has a problem with the University taking that away, but people view a coach as the worst person in the world if they take an athletic scholarship away when an athlete fails to perform at the level they were supposed to when they accepted the scholarship. It is unfortunate, but people need to realize that Trey did not produce the way he was supposed to last season, and presumably when coach Benford arrived. I think this will work out best for everyone since Trey was behind two stud point guards, not to mention two stud combo guards in Alzee and TJ on the depth chart. He has a chance to be a three year starter and still will never have to pay for college.
-
He knocked my team out of the playoffs third round my junior year, his senior year. I was surprised to see him transfer here but he's a pretty good football player. Always good to get walk-ons who can contribute on special teams.

If we can pull at least one of these of on the road that would be HUGE. RPI boosters for sure.
