Starson, the d-end I believe you are referring to, came to their campus at about 215 and with no other offers. Since then he has gained what looks like about 40 lbs and is looking like a potential NFL prospect. Not everyone turns out like this but this is one of the reasons I am ecstatic about all the players we are redshirting. Having five years at a program can do wonders for a player's development.

Exactly. I would actually be surprised and disappointed if Berglund doesn't beat out DT for these reasons.
-
Exactly! I started a thread (probably not worthy of a thread) about how all QBs have bad days throwing the ball, but players don't have bad days athletically unless they are injured. Even if Berglund comes in here and lights it up he isn't going to be top form every quarter of every game throwing the ball, but at the same time he is going to be just as athletically gifted as a game where he would be throwing lights out. Don't be scared off by Berglund's past. He isn't a bad guy and he's very committed to this football team, not to mention he loves it here. We'll see what happens but I can't see the coaches not giving him a chance, especially Chico who knows first hand how DT's lack of abilities constricts the playbook.

Good stuff Mr. Trussell! Tough loss for sure, but still can't wait for next week and another chance to see our team play. These guys work their butts off but everybody does on this level, so a loss is rarely indicative of not working hard. Let's get em next week.

No dude I'm harsh on him too, I was just surprised to see everyone on here so tough on him. I don't even think he's anything good when he's on. All the passes he completes are short ones, like in that K-State game. He did good but none of the passes he completed made me say "Wow, DT is one of very few quartebacks who can make that throw."

Playcalling is why we suck today
BillySee58 replied to UNTstormchaser's topic in Mean Green Football
Why not? We have an awesome O-Line coming back and quarterback is the most important position on the field, bar none. I'm not expecting him to come in here and save the day but the jump in talent level from DT to Berglund is enormous. Don't underestimate how much things change when you can open up the playbook and be diverse on offense. -
Unfortunately I missed the game today due to my club baseball games, so I was relegated to tracking it on my phone. I saw DT was having a bad game at least statistically so I wanted to see what the reactions would be like on here. I'll be honest, I am not a fan of DT's quarterback play at all but I was a little surprised to see how harsh people were on here. That being said, as someone who has been heavily in favor of starting Berglund over DT next year, I wanted to point out that DT had a bad day throwing so he could minimally impact the game in a positive way for us. Even if Berglund starts and plays great for us he is going to be off every now and then, even if just for a half. That's just part of football. The thing is, as a true dual threat qb he can make plays with his legs any game and still make plays for us if he is off passing. You can be off throwing but unless you're injured you don't really have an off day athletically. Just some food for thought. Hope he can pick it up for the rest of the year and at least complete the short passes.

Exactly. We have a good problem on our hands, that's for sure.

Haha yeah I know. I kinda debated posting it because of that, but I just think it's cool that the play caught the attention of people from other fan bases as other school's boards were talking about that play, from what I've heard on here. This is just a small example of how being on national TV can really be a good thing. Let's just go ahead and make a bowl game so we can be on national TV again.

I've been pretty outspoken about my wish for Antoine to get more touches over Byrd, but all that aside I think we are pretty fortunate to have 3 good backs and a very special one in #22. I stumbled across this and thought that it was pretty cool that "NTU" got a mention on this longhorns fan board because of Jim Jim's amazing run on the screen play to beat LaLa. http://longhornfanzone.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66114 I know this is just a fan who said this, but this is a LONGHORN FAN! These guys think their poop don't smell and they talk a little about how special a play that was and how they want to steal Jim Jim. A little disrespect calling us NTU but still the fact remains that anyone who saw that run, regardless of what fan base they belong to, realizes how special an athlete we have. Let's get after MUTS tomorrow, just wanted to give one more bit of praise to that special play that we will remember for some time.

This is the root of my complain with Byrd as a runner. When a defense knows a run is coming in short yardage situations you need a back who can break through some tackles. Byrd just puts his head down and goes down as soon as he gets hit. Disagree with me, that's fine. I just don't see why Byrd gets so many more carries per game than Jim Jim. He's a special talent and we need to utilize him towards his full potential.
-
I think the second part of your statement might be more likely, even though I find it a little hard to believe he doesn't know the playbook now in this his second year. We're just gonna have to agree to disagree, because I have seen Byrd do nothing to make me think he is better than Jimmerson in between the tackles. I hope Byrd does good Saturday and proves me wrong because he is going to get the ball in between the tackles, you can count on that.

Seems like some good research was done in this article, except for the fact that they say Chris Jones may not be a starter at the beginning of the year.
-
My point is I don't see Byrd doing anything to wear out the defense that Jim Jim couldn't. When Jimmerson gets the ball the play, and the drive, usually lasts longer which I think would wear the defense out just as much, if not more than Byrd's 2 to 4 yard plunges. Don't forget, our studly offensive line wears down the defense pretty good regardless of who gets the ball. Also, as good as our offensive line is Byrd is only averaging 3.8 yards per carry. I'm not saying Byrd should be getting zero carries, I just don't see why he gets so many more carries than Jimmerson.

What I am looking forward to this season
BillySee58 replied to NT1978's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Learned this word in Psychology. Very applicable to our season ahead. -
I think Coleman plays more than that, at least after he gets in the swing of things. If we are going to make any kind of run in March we will need Coleman to be huge (no pun intended) against the big boys of college basketball. Our goal is to be a player in the NCAA tournament come March. Everyone's thinking it, I'm just saying it.

Yeah I keep seeing people on here say that Byrd is softening the defenses but I don't see that. When he runs up the middle he is hardly punishing the defenses. If you look at the film he is just putting his head down and he goes down very easily. When we run from under center with Byrd he very rarely breaks tackles and as a result has a very low yards per carry average. Byrd is a much more effective runner when we go to zone blocking runs out of shotgun. This gives him a little more of a head of steam going before he meets the first arm tackle and he is able to run through it more consistently than counters and traps from under center. As for Jim Jim, I just think we are wasting his play-making ability. We scored 24 points that second half of the LaLa game. That's more than we have scored against any other FBS team this year and it was thanks in large part to Jim Jim. Relying on Byrd and DT to get us going early just isn't working in my opinion. We are 101st in the country in scoring. That has to improve if we want to be in a situation to play in a bowl game or at least become bowl eligible.
-
Is it too much to ask for a quick start? The most points we have scored in a first half this year is 14 and the most we have scored in the first half of a conference game is 10. I know we aren't a high scoring offense but we can't afford to start slow on the road against a still potent offense. Why don't we just go ahead and start the Jimmy show and hour and half early? Byrd is not a bad running back but Jimmerson has proven to be a game-breaker so I don't see why we don't get him going early. I don't expect this to happen, I just don't see why not.

Just the first two and Daniel Prior

Yeah he's back, but I've heard a couple times that Kaydon Kirby is outplaying him. Kirby is our strongest true freshman offensive lineman and is built well at 6'3" 300 lbs. It's kind of a shock he didn't have any offers since he has some solid high school film from 5A Flower Mound. Looks like we got a steal here.
-
I don't think Shawn Bradley with a 40" vertical could reach some of those passes.
-
Don't be surprised if by conference play of next year Byrd is our number three back. Also, for center, don't be surprised to see Kaydon Kirby starting over Boone Feldt. Mason Y'Barbo is also an option to move back to center so we will at least have solid competition to replace Fort. I think Power will be the hardest player to replace on the whole team. Miller is more of a fullback in our offense so hopefully guys like Marcus Smith and a healthy Daniel Prior can step up in the run game. Cooper Jones has been mentioned by Mac so hopefully he can do some things for us at TE in the pass game. A lot to look forward to next spring, I know, but let's finish this year first.

Yes, Peagram and Terrell both graduated in high school in 2010. They will enter next season as redshirt Juniors. As for their play, Terrell has the size and speed combo that none of our other receivers have. All indications are that our trio of transfers (Berglund, Terrell, and Peagram) have all been giving us very good looks in scout team to say the least. Expect them all to see the field with the possible exception of Berglund for next year at least.
