Gonna be a really tight finish for who has more threads made about them this season; Bailey Zappe or Tre Siggers. Neck and neck. Both up in the double digits.

I am feeling confident that I didn’t jinx us. As a matter of fact, I’m even willing to put my money where my mouth is. We WILL play Kansas at a neutral site, not Lawrence. Book it.

It’s a testament to how far this program has come that we are competing with teams at the absolute top of the sport. Beat current No 6 Purdue in the NCAA tourney, lost to current No 5 Villanova (currently beating the brakes off of No 17 Tennessee) in the NCAA tourney, about to play No 3 Kansas. All neutral site games too. Not us heading there to collect a paycheck and take a 30-point loss on the chin. I think this is going to be another really good team, but it’s looking like depth is probably going to be a shortcoming. Simmons taking up a scholarship 5 straight seasons while never being playable is a glaring roster mismanagement. Mccasland has obviously earned any benefit of doubt, but it’s still a bit frustrating. That being said, the dominant win is the much bigger takeaway here. Defense is already looking solid with the new pieces filling in well.

Justin Fuente Fired from Virginia Tech

He took over a program that had won 5 games in the three seasons before he got there and had them ranked in years 3 and 4 of his tenure there including in the top 15. -

All good, and yeah that’s the type of hire I expect Baker to make. And like you said, it’s very normal but there is going to be a lot of chatter on this board concerning hiring a coach who was just fired (already seeing it). -

That’s why I said hot seat. They were 5-6 when he left and they haven’t had a winning season since then so he didn’t exactly have that program in good shape when he left. He got ahead of that situation by finding a life boat. The larger point here is that obviously G5s aren’t going to pluck good P5 coaches away from that P5. So sometimes your best option is a guy who was fired, which isn’t a strange thing considering even P5s go with guys who were fired from a previous P5, or headed that way. -

Hell, look at schools like A&M and Ole Miss. both high-ranked teams whose coaches were on the hot seat and fired, respectively, from their previous P5 HC positions. -
I like the way our roster has looked early. Just need Jones and Bell to get in the gym and get it figured out on their shots.

'22 Transfer Portal IOffer - UNI QB Will McElvain

I wonder if the staff is anticipating a string of transfers at the QB position. Does Gilmore go somewhere else to play, or maybe even change positions? Can’t imagine him just sticking at QB here as the 4th string guy for 3 more years. Is this Martin’s last season? Does Ruder come back? All that to say, we might need to add two transfer QBs this offseason so we have a full room. -
That was my point. If everyone here is coming to that conclusion, why is it so hard for many on here to imagine the possibility that Wren sees it that way as well?
-
He broke his leg and broke his foot. If he was having problems with constant wear and tear injuries, or knee/ankle issues then I’d be more concerned. Broken bones happen, whether someone is durable or injury prone. A guy gets tackled onto your leg from behind when you’re blocking, that’s just a matter of how much pressure can be applied on a human bone before breaking. I really think it’s much more of an issue of bad luck than someone we can’t depend on to stay healthy. But yeah, definitely agree on adding someone as well. Maybe Trevon West, Harold West’s brother who was in the portal in the spring but decided to stay at OU this season after all is someone who we could add.
-
Give this dude more targets than Damon Ward going forward and go into next season with an outside receiver rotation of Tommy Bush, Jyaire Shorter, and Brown and we might have something.
-
Why does everyone see wins like this, complain that they shouldn’t be grounds for Seth to retain his job because of the quality of opponent, then seem to ignore the possibility that Wren Baker could come to a similar conclusion?

Already have FCS games with Lamar in 2025 and HBU in 2026. Maybe in 2027 on after though.

'22 S Offer: Ahmaad Moses; Mansfield Summit; 3 star - .8366

We can say we are wishing for shutdown corners through the portal, but the truth is there are a few degrees of separation between what we have been getting and a true shutdown corner, as you illustrated. I think we’re still in a time where the impact of the transfer portal isn’t being properly weighted. For example, many on this board clamoring for more transfer portal players cite SMU as a template. Ask one of those people how many defensive starters SMU has from the transfer portal, they’ll probably overstate it. SMU has 2 defensive starters from the transfer portal. That’s how many we started this past Saturday. Then they have 2 others from JUCO and 7 were signed out of high school. That’s pretty much in line with us. They are getting better players in the portal, and hopefully we will too soon, but at the end of the day they’re using it to supplement their high school signees. Not the other way around. -

Did I say you said or thought that? No, I didn’t. I was asking an entirely new question related to the situation, that was fairly relevant. -

In your original post you said “shouldn’t we be focusing on corners instead of safeties?” My point is I don’t think it’s an either/or proposition. We can get both. Also, would you rather have a HS signee who we identify as a likely 3-year starting safety or a transfer portal corner who couldn’t crack a P5 rotation? Dealing in realistic scenarios, you don’t want to say no to a top HS talent just because you are holding out hope on getting two “shutdown” corners through the transfer portal. Because if they’re shutdown corners they’re probably already at a P5 and not transferring, or are looking to move up to a P5. We get John Davis and Jordan Rucker types through the portal (P5 backups who couldn’t crack the rotation), or Ridge Texada and Sean-Thomas Faulkner types (FCS starters). Hopefully we continue to improve on the caliber of guys we sign through the portal, but we’re just not in a position to be turning down multi-year starter type high school signees because of holding out hope for transfer portal pulls that are significantly above what we have gotten through the portal.
