Smith goes from JUCO castoff to D-I scholarship
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
What people need to realize is that we are UNT, and in recruiting that doesn't amount a whole lot to high school players. True deep threats, players that have legitimate height, speed, and production are almost never allowed to slip through the cracks by the UTs and OUs and such. This is why we are stuck getting players from small schools, players that didn't produce much in high school but have the measurables, players that did produce but are too small/too slow, etc. This isn't a bad thing, but it does mean that we are going to have to develop our players. We just aren't going to get 6'4" 205 lb receivers that run a 4.4 and caught 20 touchdowns for the team that won the Texas 5A division 1 state championship. Hopefully we can have a good recruiting season, a good spring, and get our receivers healthy and on the same page as whoever our QB is (Berglund cough cough). A really good QB can make do with what he has at receiver, not to mention we will return a stacked o-line and some solid backs to ease the pressure on our passing game. Unfortunately that hasn't been enough this year, but we'll see in due time if we have the makings of being a competitive D1 team. -
Yeah, look at my post a few posts up. He was, I'm not sure what happened since apparently he was supposed to be on the plane to LSU.

Smith goes from JUCO castoff to D-I scholarship

Despite these trust issues Jim Jim has scored 6 tds in the last 4 games. The rest of our offense, not including Chancellor, has scored just 5 touchdowns this entire year against FBS opponents. -
I told some of my friends about it and they really want to go. A few questions: 1. What room in the gateway building is it going to be in? 2. Is there going to be a facebook event for it (my friend wanted to know?

He should've been eligible to play this year since he was coming over as a walk-on.
-
QB Brock Berglund (class of 2011) will be eligible to play the next three years as a redshirt sophomore next season, WR Darius Terrell (class of 2010) will be eligible to play the next two years as a redshirt junior next season, and RB Reggie Pegram (class of 2010) will also be eligible to play the next two years as a redshirt junior next year.

DRC: Emergence of Smith is great, but hints at deeper issues
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I've thought the same thing. Very possible, especially with 4 freshman offensive lineman redshirting (I'm including Kirby even though he isn't on scholly yet). We have developed some good depth and talent at O-Line, not to mention 4 commits all around 6'5" 290+. Offensive line and running back are the least of our concerns going forward. -
No it was Jamal. I was on the first row in the student section so I saw the back of his jersey and saw J. Marshall and he was #18, not #15. It was during the TSU game. I thought it was strange that we were burning his redshirt just for special teams but he hasn't even played that since.

Yeah I heard Schraps got some some pt early, but I never say it personally. As for Jamal Marshall yes, I have seen him on kickoff team.

Turner Smiley commits to UNT - Mean Green Blog

Exactly. That article by brett vito about how it is concerning that an unrecruited walk-on (Darnell Smith) is out performing schloarship players, it wasn't that surprising to me. Shoot, even Brelan Chancellor was offered only by us. What if we hadn't and he walked on here anyways? Would we be going crazy over his production? It shouldn't be that surprising when a still talented walk-on who wants it more can beat out some guys who only had a couple other offers or, much less, we were the only school that recruited him. -
Good stuff! As for the Harrison twins they play for Fort Bend Travis, not Lake Travis. Which one are you guys playing?
-
Sounds like there was a special celebrity guest cheering Wesley on in this vid.

You're kind of splitting hairs with this argument. Most coaches believe that if you win the conference you are the team to beat until proven otherwise. This pick of MTSU might have been more obligatory than it was saying they have better talent or are going to beat UNT.

UNT WR Prospect At Coppell: Cameron Smith
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I love getting players from established 5A programs. Maybe I'm biased as a guy that played at a 5A school, but I feel like these players are at a huge advantage as far as being prepared to play college football as opposed to guys from smaller programs like 1A and 2A schools. Guys like Jimmerson and Zach Orr from 5A power Desoto, Brelan Chancellor and Brandin Byrd from Copperas Cove (same school as RG3), and David Busby from Coppell as well. Good players from 5A high schools unfortunately do not fall through the cracks of the UTs and A&Ms very often so it might be wise to jump on these opportunities when we have the chance. Hopefully we get more of these guys now that we are CUSA. -
Why doesn't JimJim get the bulk of the carries?
BillySee58 replied to UNTstormchaser's topic in Mean Green Football
My thoughts exactly. That's what he's been relegated to as far as roles are concerned and it has stuck, for whatever reason. He's not a bad back, I just don't see what he has done to earn that title. On a side note before we move away from this topic, the best thing I have seen from Byrd all year was during the Houston game when we gave him the ball out of shotgun and ran a zone blocking scheme. He ran very well on those runs and I have been kind of disappointed that we have not allowed him to do that anymore. But I digress, as I am merely an armchair coach. -
Played against him my junior year when he was a sophomore at Cedar Hill. He was definitely a talent but never really found a position and never really got tall. He didn't look great in the UA all american game at cornerback but that's the hardest position in football playing against some top tier talent. I could see him at least being a solid return man for us, as we know those guys don't grow on trees and he is capable.

Why doesn't JimJim get the bulk of the carries?
BillySee58 replied to UNTstormchaser's topic in Mean Green Football
My opinion on this is that he is being used effectively. When he got a lot of carries earlier in the year he wasn't very effective, but when we can use him at the right time he is very effective especially in space. Valid argument as it's hard to say he doesn't deserve more carries. This right here is my favorite part about Jim Jim. He is pretty patient and when he picks a whole he uses his shiftiness and lower-body strength to shed defenders. I see Byrd just put his head down and go too much. I agree with the rest of your speculation as I think that may very well be the case in our current situation. Curious question, and I mean no disrespect as someone who listens to your podcast, but what do you see Byrd do that makes you classify him as a power runner? I feel like a lot of people say this because we run the ball inside a lot when he is in, yet I think he gets stuffed too much on short yardage and goal line sometimes because of penetration but also because he is not strong enough or shifty enough on some plays. -

This. I would say Chico's lack of confidence in DT, at least more on 3rd and 10+ running an 8 yard route. Other than that I have no idea why. -

BillySee58 replied to UNTstormchaser's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, he does have a ways to go, but I just don't see why he's such a big liability. He's our best pass-catching running back so he would be going out for passes on a lot of the pass downs he's in for, and the other plays that he has to stay in and block could help him improve. I completely agree with Mac that Jim Jim needs to improve his pass pro, I just think he is a lot closer than Mac is making it sound. He's making the big bucks so his opinion is the one that matters. -
Dodge won 3 games in his first two years, Mac has already won 8. Mac is well ahead of Dodge as far as progressing this program so a comparison between the two at this point is one-sided still. You're right about next year though. We should, and almost need to, start seeing some more results next year with a finally decent senior class.

Why doesn't JimJim get the bulk of the carries?
BillySee58 replied to UNTstormchaser's topic in Mean Green Football
I usually agree with you, but not this time at all. Jim Jim is actually the heaviest of our backs so it's hard to call him small at 219. We aren't asking for 35 carries a game, just more like 20. He is short, but not small. I have seen people say he isn't good in pass pro, but I would say make sure you see it enough first before you say it and don't just say it because that's what other people say (not singling you out on this). He is improving a lot and has good form on his cut blocks, head up and accelerates through the knee well. Also, as for Byrd being a power back I don't see why people say that. Yes he has good size but he goes down incredibly easy, goes down to too many arm tackles. This is why he has 0 touchdowns against FBS teams. Brown is being used properly but maybe even more of Byrd's carries should go to Jim Jim. Finally, going deep just isn't playing to DT's strength. The good Lord blessed him with a good noggin but, as far as D-1 qbs are concerned, not much arm strength. With our current personnel we don't pose a threat to get open and complete deep passes. Teams will continue to stack the box. -

I'm not saying Brock Berglund is going to come in here and lead us to an undefeated season and a BCS bowl next year but I do think it will be a night and day difference with him under center. He's a very hungry player and he cannot wait at all for next season. As disheartening as this season and these last couple game in particular have looked I think we are a lot closer than people think. Darnell Smith has been a practice warrior and it's starting to show off in the games. Our offensive line is going to be solid next year again and BB is going to have some solid weapons at his disposal. Chancellor, Terrell, Harris, Smith, Jim Jim, Peagram, and hopefully some other players emerge. Teams will not be able to run cover 0 with 8 or 9 in the box against us next year. I also think Berglund's running ability will make a difference for us, a true dual-threat who can actually throw the ball can really throw a wrench in any defensive coordinator's gameplan. As for our defense, while they have not played well of late they have given up 38 and 37 points the last two games. That's not good but geez, Lord forbid we can't win or at least make it a shootout every once in a while! Also, nearly everyone will be returning next year, including some guys redshirting. I really hope Freddie Warner can come back, that way we can move Zac Whitfield to the nickel where he is more suited. We are a lot closer than it looks on the surface guys. Believe what you want.
