Spring football will answer a lot of questions
BillySee58 replied to trussbussdad's topic in Mean Green Football
Did you ever personally participate in spring football? I don't mean any offense either, but it is huge for both the coaches and the players. I will agree that the spring game is mainly for fans, seeing that scrimmaging takes place all spring with the game just being a little more organized. The game does help with certain things, such as cutting down penalties and personal game-day preparation. As far as your point about not knowing if your offense is good or the defense is making them look good, that's a complete fan perspective. The coaches care more about comparing their players from the same side of the ball and same position. Spring ball is all about evaluating and getting the best players at each position and the best overall lineups on the field. Not necessarily about seeing if your defense is better than your offense. -
I herby declare it the Brock Berglund era!
BillySee58 replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
People need to realize that Berglund is only going to be a redshirt sophomore next year. Even if he doesn't light things up at first, he will still have time to develop. The important thing is that he actually develops, unlike DT who I personally witnessed improve none whatsoever from the first home game against Houston last year until the last home game against South Alabama, not even mentioning his road woes. Also, even if Berglund isn't doing great throwing the ball he at least brings the aspect of a running quarterback to our offense. Bad throwing games happen, but unless Berglund has an injury or something, he isn't going to wake up and be less athletic or fast on any gameday. I just don't see how he can be any worse throwing the football than DT. -
While we love to bash on Dodge for all his failures, one really sticks out to me is Dodge's overhaul of JUCOs, particularly in his 2010 recruiting class when he was given that 4th year. Even though those JUCOs are now gone or didn't pan out, we are left with 11 of the 12 high school players from that class. These high school players are (classifications for next year): Seniors - Zach Orr (4-year starter, probable 1st-team all-conference pick this year) - Will Wright (4-year contributor, started games in multiple years) - Aaron Bellazin (4-year contributor, 5 sacks this year) - Richard Abbe (4-year contributor, started games in multiple years) - Brelan Chancellor (4-year starter at returner, 3-year starter at wide receiver) - Brandin Byrd (4-year contributor, leading rusher this year) - Zach Olen (4-year starter at kicker) Redshirt Juniors - Antonio Johnson (4-year starter, potential all-conference honors) - Mason Y'Barbo (4-year starter, potential all-conference honors) - Derrick Teegarden (4-year special teams contributor, provides depth at wide receiver) - Blake Dunham (3-year starter at long snapper) While these players are not all all-conference players or even starters, the fact that over 90% of these guy are still here for their fourth year really speaks a lot towards Coach Mac, who didn't even recruit them. It goes to show that even if you are only getting two-star and occasional three-star players, as long as you are able to develop them and keep them at your school then you will have a chance. This senior class, plus the five 2009 class redshirt seniors (Thompson, Boutwell, Jackson, Prior, Anyiam) and walk-ons that have had successful careers and, in some cases, earned scholarships should provide for a solid senior class next year to go along with a solid core of underclassmen.

Would you be referring to a certain former Martin/Seton Hall volleyball player? Yeah, she would have something to say to you, all the way from Cambridge, Massachusetts where she is attending Harvard medical school. Also, Tom Grieve's daughter played volleyball there.

I'm sticking with Jovon Wilson, the guy I made a thread for. Still don't know if we are actually in on him but he was a teammate of Berglund's at Scottsdale so maybe Brock can recruit him. Check out these highlights. He has the potential to be a real field-stretcher at tight end, and has the size to impact the run game. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1389133/highlights/10962373 Note: His name gets spelled different online (javon) sometimes.

Don't forget Christian Hines and Andrew Tucker are grayshirting. That might be who, as they are counting toward the 2013 class. Yes, Chelf is a walk on

I have a guess, lol

Potential Power Replacement, Jovon Wilson
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Jones will be a redshirt sophomore and so too should Marcus Smith. I agree that tight end isn't a dire need or anything, but this guy (or maybe another good juco te) could step into a position where we don't have a definite starter. Yes, we wouldn't be hurting if we don't sign an impact tight end this class, but dang this kid could really open up the middle of the field for us and help replace one of our best players. -
That's what I'm thinking.

Since we might be looking for a potential juco replacement for Power at TE, I hope we consider going after this guy. Plays at Scottsdale C.C. where Brock Berglund played for one scrimmage before transferring here. Listed at 6'4" and (depending on the source) between 245 and 263 lbs. Very well put together, looks like a defensive end but runs very fluidly and looks natural catching the ball. According to the team website he is a freshman, and according to rivals and his highlights he is coming out of juco in may. If these sources are correct then he should have three years to play three seasons once he arrives at a university for the start of fall practice. Lists one offer on rivals from Arkansas, but that's it surprisingly. Don't know if any other schools have offered or are going to but he is a BCS caliber player. I don't know how much of a relationship Berglund built with him in their short time there together but it'd be pretty sweet if Brock could help sway him to UNT. As a lifelong Tennessee fan, I have no idea what will happen. The fan base is going crazy clamoring for Gruden, and I would like that as well. My darkhorse candidate is Willie Taggart from WKU. Not the name the UT faithful want to hear but the guy can flat out recruit and he isn't a bad coach either.

VERBAL - 2013 HS - Greg Wesley 6'7" SF

Good to hear! -
A solid returning offensive line to go along with Jimmerson, Byrd, and Pegram should relieve pressure on the pass game. Hope the passing game can do the same for them, as they weren't able to this year.

Sorry for being a buzzkill, but that article is from 2011. Kelvin Downs was a senior last year and is now at Arky State. -

Any update yet on Wesley's status/why he missed that game? -
The defensive coordinator, Ronnie Jones, relies heavily on the blitz and even more heavily on having stud cornerbacks. Our defense has stacked up among the best in the state in recent years. Jones was a head coach at West Texas A&M for a while and was a special teams coach for the Arizona Cardinals, so he has built quite the resume, especially for a high school DC. Wouldn't expect to see either of them on the college level anytime soon, but that's not to say they aren't qualified (double negative).

Thanks Mr. Trussell, that's means a lot. I think the biggest reason we were able to turn things around and build something special was because we were there day in and day out, working together towards our goal. If the 2011 recruiting class, Connor's recruiting class, and the classes after that can do that, Coach Mac will make sure the same success will happen at UNT. The biggest reason UNT struggled recently is because so many players have left the program. If the recruits Coach Mac has brought in are able to stick with the program and get the most out of their abilities we will see this thing start to turn around.
-
We'll be fine. We aren't UT so we're going to have to get some late bloomers and guys who have been overlooked in the recruiting process.
-
Stunned and disappointed for me. If he isn't better than DT then I don't see how this team can improve very much with no improvement at the most important position.
-
As one of the players for Arlington Martin during that transition, I completely see the similarities. I can't believe I never made the connections. Also, Coach Wintrich and Coach Gonzo appear to be from the same school of thought. When Coach Wager came in, we got a new weightroom and a strength and conditioning coordinator to kick everyone's butt. Looks like we have a good one at the helm in Denton as well. Good stuff Mr. Trussell.

You also have to take into account the fact the he faces cover freaking zero nearly every game. Tired of excuses, football is a game of results and we aren't getting any. I'll admit, I'm relatively new to this fan base but I did watch Scott Hall play while I was growing up and, sadly, I watched all of the Dodge era. Please, great people of this fan base, don't subject yourself to feeling that DT is an adequate division-1 quarterback. He's a good guy but it would be for the best of the team if Berglund were able to prove he is a better player and win the job. Also, if this happens don't feel bad for DT. He's going to leave here with plenty of memories and free schooling well into his master's degree.

McCarney to take long look at roster and signing day thoughts

All of our starting defensive backs will return next year, not to mention the hopeful return of Freddie Warner. -
McCarney to take long look at roster and signing day thoughts
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think that safety would make sure Cyril didn't have any knees left after he hit him. This is why I don't like giving the ball to big lineman to run it in on short plays. Defensive players are ruthless and they aim at your knees with everything they have. Did you see what happened to Lattimore? -
Don't forget to take into account that we no longer have Siddons committed since we pulled his scholly.
