We're gonna have our hands full. Another example of a game in which we are going to have to score some points to keep up. That is a loaded offense.

A look at UNT’s key games of 2013 — Part II, Idaho
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
For sure we have to win, but to me our offense has to score 40+ this game. Let's see some big plays. Long completions, break some big runs, receivers taking short passes for big gains after the catch, and most importantly getting the ball in the endzone when we get in the red zone. These guys return just 3 starters from a defense that have up 42 points a game and almost 500 yards a game. Our offense has plenty of experience under it's belt and 5 guys who are entering their third straight year as starters. We have them outclassed in talent, speed, experience, and are playing at home while they are playing 2000 miles away from home. This has to be a big day for our offense. -
If DT is our qb this year and we're struggling to get to a 5 win pace then BB better be our qb after the Tulane game. Basically if we win 5 games this year with a combo of DT and BB then I doubt BB has what it takes to lead us to 8 wins next year. Could happen though. I know we've gone in so many circles with this conversation that we're all dizzy, but our passing game is what is holding us back. We have 3 third-year starters on the line, 2 experienced running backs and 2 good-looking newcomers, and a receiving corps that has good size and speed. If our qb has anywhere near the time that DT had to throw last year then the production has to improve. Our defense needs improvement, but we were middle of the pack in points given up. They at least give us a chance in games. They had a few games where we gave up in the 30s for points scored, but Heaven forbid we can't keep up a little in games like that.

Yes it's a huge year. I disagree that the schedule is easier. It is a good schedule, but I do think the competition is a tad better. The biggest thing you hit at is recruiting. You can only be an up and coming team for so long. We have improved under Coach Mac compared to the Dodge era, but we need more than 5 wins this year. 5 or less shows that we are stagnant and not improving. And yes, we have way too many players returning plus all the additions for this team to not be improved.
-
IMO the best thing that Dodge left us with was his 2010 recruiting class. There weren't a lot of high school kids in that class, but they turned out to be pretty good. Seniors like Bellazin, Wright, Orr, Olen, Byrd, and chancellor as well as redshirt juniors Teagarden, Dunham, Antonio Johnson, and Mason Y'Barbo. We signed 12 high school kids that year and 11 of them have been solid contributors throughout their career (also Richard Abbe). These guys and the redshirt seniors from the class of 09, as well as some of the third year guys from the class of 2011, form a good nucleus of guys who have been here from the beginning of the Coach Mac era. I think they form a much better leadership core than what we had last year.

As great as that would be, I really would like to see some skill players of ours get post season recognition. Guys like DT or Berglund, chancellor, Terrell, Kidsy, Jimmerson. Some of these guys becoming all-conference caliber playmakers would do a lot for this offense. I've said this many times, but we averaged 20.9 points a game last year and that just won't cut it this year. As a former lineman myself I greatly appreciate seeing our lineman getting attention this preseason and last postseason, but we need playmakers to emerge this year.

Top five-and-a-half things I'm looking forward to this year
BillySee58 replied to aztecskin's topic in Mean Green Football
1. Scoring more points! 20.9 points a game isn't going to cut it. Southern Miss scored 19.7 points a game last year and won 0 games last year in this conference. We have to improve big time on that, no matter who is under center. And for the record idc who is as long as we score more. 2. Season opener at home. Great opportunity to start the season 1-0 3. Pretty sweet schedule. 6 home games that are winnable, as well as a few road games where we should have a decent chance like Southern Miss and Tulane. 4. Watching our new guys. Obviously the transfers were brought in to contribute immediately, but I can't wait to see guys like Darvin Kidsy, Syd Moore, and Chad Davis contribute as true freshman. 5. Getting to meet you guys. Between baseball, work, and my infant nephew I haven't had a chance to go to the GMG games. I won't be missing game days though. -
Awesome! Way to go Zach! Great face of our team.

SMU will not win over 5.5 games this season

Wow froggystyle. Very impressive troll work. You derailed this thread to the point that we're going through your schedule game by game predicting how you guys stack up with teams in a conference that we don't even play in. Take note cougar king. -

There's no inferiority complex. Nobody likes elitists who feel that they're better than everyone else. Plus, let's be honest. We need a true rival and this series with them has the potential to be that, especially on the recruiting trail. -
Sunday morning North Texas recruiting notes
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Shaquel Jackson has been rated a 2-star on rivals for a while (since the day Vito first reported the commitment), but he hadn't been listed as a UNT commit. Really good pickup.- 3 replies

I concur. In club baseball we beat their team like a drum everytime, but they still act like punks and complain to the umps, then peel out of the parking lot in daddy's Benz. When we were kicking their butt players from their team literally started calling out our education at UNT, calling it second rate and crap like that. I can't wait to see our football team take them down year after year. -
Sorry I couldn't make it out this year. Nephew's first birthday party. Hope to play next year. What field did you guys play at?

What UNT’s roster looks like now Part II
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
It's unfortunate, but I agree. If a guy is 6'10" or up he would end up at a Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke type school if he has any skill. Hopefully Gaines can buck that trend. -

BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
True. I remember back when they rolled out Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews, and Lazar Hayward and the 5 spot was reserved specifically for protecting the rim and getting rebounds. That team did pretty good in a Big East that was extremely loaded that year. -

I agree. It should be interesting to see Voss, Flannigan, and Wesley battle it out. I like Wesley's athleticism and his ability to stretch the floor with his shooting ability. Voss maybe could do that a little too. I wonder about Flannigan's offensive game. All I've seen is that he's athletic and can put the ball in around the rim. He scored 14 points a game so maybe he has some sort of scoring ability. -
Where'd you play high school football and when?
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Good memory! Yup, having those two was quite the luxury. Our fans always got a great halftime show with those two basically playing horse. Jaden was the power leg and Ben was big time accuracy, but that's not to say Jaden isn't accurate or Ben doesn't have a strong leg.- 61 replies

Yeah, that was 09, my junior year. My senior year we tried a similar one and it got blocked if I remember correctly. That game is still a blur to me. But yeah, they both have a good chance.- 61 replies

Yup, Jaden Oberkrom. The funny thing is he got beat out my senior year by a kid who was a sophomore then, just graduated. Kid named Ben Grogan who is off to Ok St on a scholarship. Jaden had an NFL leg when he was in high school. Had a few 50+ yarders including a 60 yarder. Oh you know Reid's dad? Nice, good friend of mine.- 61 replies

Arlington Martin class of 2011. Played four years. Junior year alternated between JV and varsity but got to see some snaps on Friday nights a few times. Started at center my senior year and we were 10-3 with an undefeated district championship. Unfortunately lost to Euless Trinity in the third round both my Junior and Senior year. Luckily my buddies in the class after me, including Trussell and Haboul, got revenge for us and beat them the year after I graduated. I was privileged to play with 6 guys who earned D1 scholarships in my class and 8 guys the next year including a couple members of our beloved Mean Green. I was too small to play college football but luckily I had good grades and a good SAT score so UNT gave me a nice little academic scholly, and I'm getting to play club baseball here.- 61 replies

You only get 85 schollies max. As for per class, you get 25 scholarships per class. If you don't sign 25 in a class you get however many short you were extra the next year. For example, we signed 22 this year, so we could sign 28 for this year's class. My point through that was I think if he had quit before our last signing day we would have been able to fill his scholly in the subsequent class. I'm not sure about that and it's a moot point anyway, but oh well. Good luck Boone.

LeBron is one of the most amazing athletes to play professional sports in this country from a pure athletic standpoint, but the guy should not be a role model. At least not to the point of emulating this particular phrase. Kids say "I will be taking my talents to.." all the time in recruiting. It is terrible. Humility never goes out of style.
