New offer - 2014 OLB Brandon Garner
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Plays well in space. That seems to be a trend among the linebackers Coach Mac is recruiting. See Ellis and Calvin Minor last year, as well as Jamal Marshall the year before who they quickly converted to a linebacker. You need speed on defense with all the spread offenses out there. Maybe he could potentially be a strong safety for us, but I'm thinking linebacker. -
Plays for a pretty good team. Former Purdue commit, has since decommitted. Also holds a UTEP offer. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Brandon-Garner-142182 http://247sports.com/Player/Brandon-Garner-20286 http://www.hudl.com/athlete/554011/brandon-garner

3 North Texas players in tonights all-star game
BillySee58 replied to IslandEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
At receiver we have: probably our best offensive weapon and fastest player in Brelan Chancellor, two players who had productive first years with us last year in Harris and Darnell Smith, new guys who've looked good so far in Darius Terrell and Skip Caldwell, and a stud true freshman in Darvin Kidsy. Throw in a true pass-catching threat out of the backfield (Jimmerson), a group of tight ends that the coaches are very high on, and an above average blocking o-line. No excuses for lack of production in the passing game or lack of scoring. -

This gives him a better chance to play early IMO. -
This story makes me sick...puts things into perspective
BillySee58 replied to trussbussdad's topic in Mean Green Football
There's not much you can say about that. You can never prepare for something like this. -
I really hope they go 0-12. I want us to beat them every year like Texas over Baylor, Tennessee over Vandy, USC over Cal. Cross state "rival" that isn't much of a rival because we pummel them every year.

Breaking news — UNT adds WR Fonzale Davis
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
90's right, we have the facilities. If we win we have a good shot at keeping this kid. We also have 3 of our top 6 receivers graduating (Chancellor, Pleasant, D Smith) so this kid will have a chance to start right away. We're close to home, have great facilities, good television exposure in CUSA, and a chance to play early. You add a bowl game trip this year to that list and we have a great sell to keep this kid and get other top recruits. -
I didn't say we had a great o-line, just stating that your post makes it sound like you're complaining about our o-line not giving DT enough time to throw. We were fine at o-line last year, we will be again this year. And yes, Emmitt is right. We were running with the box stacked all the time. Also, I feel that Brandin Byrd wasted a lot of good run blocking last year, but that's another story. As for "LOFT" we had two players who could've easily been first-team in Zach Orr and Cyril Lemon. In many preseason magazines Orr and Lemon are first team and Akunne, Whitfield, Chancellor and fellow o-lineman Antonio Johnson and Mason Y'Barbo have been receiving preseason all-conference hype as well. We have enough talent, especially on offense. Yeah that does contribute to the few sacks, but let's not take away from the job they did last year. There were more complex, long developing routes than you make it seem. Mac and Chico trusted our o-line to give DT time to throw and they called plays accordingly. Yes the o-line was not a powerhouse, but they were consistent game in and game out. Something DT was far from.

If we could somehow head into the ball state game 2-0 then I can't imagine less than 22K.
-
I don't mind Brady Brown being productive, but I hope and think this is the year we stop relying on production from walk ons at wide receiver.
-
Don't confuse lack of trust with lack of support. We all support him, but our trust in his ability took a huge hit after watching him play last year. Also, saying he didn't have a decent o-line last year is ridiculous. That makes it sound like you're using our o-line giving him no time to throw as an excuse. They gave him all day to throw last year and that's a major reason why their is doubt in his ability.
-
We should pass for 3,000 this year with these guys. Smith and Chancellor just get open. Throw in Harris, the new guys (Kidsy & Terrell) and Jimmerson, our threat out of the backfield and it should be a fun year throwing the ball.
-
He will be our biggest defensive lineman after Abbe graduates. He's a huge part of this class, no pun intended.
-
I'm going with the Jimmy show. Can't wait to watch Antoinne Jimmerson take over some games this year.

I know one is a kicker, but we now have one more three-star recruit committed to us, according to ESPN, than we had all of last year.

UNT picks up 2014 kicker Trevor Moore commit
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Good! Solid pickup. 22nd ranked kicker in the country according to ESPN recruiting. -
This offense is way too good to be 105th in the nation in scoring. This is the best o-line we've had since Mac got here, the best receiving corp since he's been here, and the deepest backfield since he's been here. That's just my opinion. You could make a case that it'll be tough to be better than last year's o-line, but since Mac has been here he has been building this team around our three junior lineman Johnson, Y'Barbo, and Lemon. Also, no more receiver excuses. If DT isn't producing we have to give someone else a chance.

Honestly, why any of those guys were three stars was beyond me. Lancaster has the height and speed, but he greatly needs to get better as a receiver. Feldt looked good but you could tell he was playing bad competition and he was undersized for D1 although he dwarfed his opponents. Of course some of those guys from that class will end up starting at some point, but that class may go down as the "depth class." I see a lot of those guys being able to provide depth so that we are able to redshirt future incoming freshman. Doesn't look like a flashy class, but as long as those guys stay on campus and continue to improve they will be a big part of our turnaround.

QB Connor Means (Deer Park) commits to North Texas
BillySee58 replied to meangreente's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm really excited to see what our Houston area players from our current class do as true freshman (Darvin Kidsy and Chad Davis). Also, because Connor Means is an early enrollee you don't have to wait until national signing day to see if we keep him. Because he is an early enrollee he will enroll in December and start classes at UNT in January. Also, if we can make a bowl game, Means would be able to participate in our bowl game practices. -

He's got the size, athleticism, and arm. In his second year as a starter he will be much better at reading defenses and the game will be much slower for him. -

Don't underestimate the jump qbs make from Junior to Senior year. Especially if this was Means first year as a starter. Does anyone know if it was? -

Decent district too. Port Arthur Memorial and Galena Park North Shore are good teams. -
That was the year OU just straight took everyone to the woodshed. They beat Texas 65-13 in the Red River bloodbath. Then they lost to K-State in the conference championship game and LSU in the sugar bowl. Everyone though they were one of the best teams of all time until those last two games. Pretty respectable score holding that offense with the Heisman Trophy winner to 37 points.
