How much are we going to run the ball?
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Nothing personal, but everyone always says something to the tune of "I don't care what we do as long as we're winning games." Well yeah, duh. But we're trying to discuss what it's going to take to win. -
Interesting. Yeah, Level was a steal for you guys. Good player from a really good high school program. That helps us IMO, especially in game 1 when other guys are less experienced. But yeah, Runner is supposed to be a key player on offense from what I've read. Also, how's Deon Watson doing? Good size and from same school as Chalich.

It'll be interesting to see how much qb running there is and how much that changes up the way defenses approach us. Also, as grayeagle pointed out, don't underestimate how much coverage runs can help out an offense. Everyone's covered and the qb takes off for a first every once in a while can really help things, not to mention adding in a qb spy on the defense means one less guy in coverage. -
Level, or Lovett both ways?
-
Chico has explicitly said he will have a hit sheet for Chancellor; I'm guessing about 10 touches a game. Even if Brelan gets 5 catches a game, that still leaves about 5 carries a game to get him. There is also a good chance we have a running qb, either DW or BB, who figures to get at least 5 qb runs per game. Not to mention our three running backs, at least, who will all split carries. You would think somewhere around 30 carries a game for the running backs. My point is, we will be a heavily running football team again. Maybe even more so than last year. Could translate to a tailor-situation for a young qb to step into.

Do you go with the young guy with upside?
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
My point is that the lack of trust isn't completely unwarranted. I just hope that the coaches let whoever it is throw the ball. Especially on first down. Well, now I'm starting to sound like you. -

I know your opinion that DT was restricted with the playcalling, but to me he sealed his own fate by not improving a lick over two season as the undisputed starting qb. -

I don't see how Thompson would lead us to victories in any games that Williams, or Berglund really, wouldn't be able to. They bring more upside because they are more talented and can do things that DT cannot, with their arm and legs. We're going to rely heavily on the run, so that will help us break them in. Relieve the pressure on them so we can call plays to their strengths. -
Who will be our starting QB by Conference Play ?
BillySee58 replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
You realize that you don't burn the redshirt until he steps onto the field for a play, right? A player can suit up for every game but unless they actually go in, they maintain their redshirt. -

I hope it's either Williams or Berglund. They have the most upside in a conference where you need to put up points -
We've seen how CUSA seems to be impacting our recruiting. It seems like our brand will be expanding out of the state more with CUSA, and we've dipped into Oklahoma a bit this class but we've seemingly abandoned Louisiana. While our recruiting class will probably always be filled primarily with recruits from DFW and Houston, what's a region where you'd like to see us start having a presence in to where we get about 1-3 guys a class from that area? To me it'd be Memphis. I'm not sure what our history is recruiting over there, but it's a very football rich area with some really good programs and it's less than an 8-hour drive to Denton. Good place to find some D1 size and speed and the kids parents can drive to Denton for games if they want. Also, we play in Birmingham, Bowling Green, Murfreesboro, Ruston, and Hattiesburg which are all less than 5 hours away from Memphis.

Him wearing 75 makes it very tempting to plug him in on the d-line some

Taking things a little personally today.

Winning is the most important thing, absolutely. But don't take lightly how big a recruiting tool jerseys have become.
-
Yeah, that's a good example of what can happen. But that takes the qb developing. We started DT a couple years ago as a redshirt sophomore, but he didn't develop or improve these last two years. I think we go with someone other than DT this year. If it's Mcnulty or Berglund they will have 3 years of eligibility left to develop, Williams would have 4. The key is that they do progress and improve as we build our offense around whichever young gun is under center.
-
Absolutely. Williams definitely looks the part of a D1 qb, but we absolutely need that out of the other 3 and that may very well be what Mac is doing. However, any reps DW gets with the first or second team, he has earned it.

First week of camp thoughts, record picks update
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
"UNT fans are focused on what Thompson has done to win the job. What might be just as important is that he hasn't lost it and that the two other guys in the hunt haven't done much to bump Thompson out of the lineup." Translation: DT is not winning the qb battle, but rather is not losing it. While the other qbs haven't taken the job from DT, he hasn't done anything to separate himself from the pack either. Just like how we play to not lose the game with DT at qb (LaLa, WKU, South Alabama games), he's playing not to lose the qb spot rather then going out and grabbing it. Hopefully some qb takes the spot, rather than simply doesn't lose their spot.- 1 reply

Good news and bad news out of #1 UNT scrimmage
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
That's what I thought you meant, see my posts before. 6 wins is very doable, especially with 6 home games and some winnable road games. -

I mean you can try to argue a fact, but you aren't going to change it. -

How you feel about the term and whether it is misused or not is up to you. Original guy said 6 wins is magical. You took it as our fans have lowered expectations and think 6 wins is a magical season. I just offered you another perspective of what Big Dawg might've meant by magical 6 with my baseball reference. That's how I took it at least. Technically 6 wins is the magic number for bowl eligibility and you can't argue that, whether you think the term is being misused or not. -

Good news and bad news out of #1 UNT scrimmage
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Our magic number to reach bowl ELIGIBILITY is 6. 6 wins A magical season would be winning our division and then our conference championship and finishing the season ranked with double digit victories. That is my idea of a magical season. Not the same thing as a magic number.
