I've thought about a JUCO tight end since Prior and Miller are leaving, but we'll have 1 scholarship tight end as a senior (Tanner Smith) and 3 juniors (Marcus Smith, Cooper Jones, and Loving) and then a redshirt freshman in Wylie Reinhardt. Adding a JUCO tight end would give us 4 junior tight ends. But if we could get one who is an upgrade over what we have it might not be such a bad thing. Although Marcus Smith has shown a lot of potential.

The way we were hitting them that game made it no surprise. But yeah, that is a lot for a team that good.

Sounds like Wesley probably will not play this year but will be at UNT to play the next 4 years. Could be worse.

We actually out gained Ball State. Tulane did not out gain us. We had over 100 yards more than they did.
-
Ball state rolling 31-3 at half. They're the real deal and our victory against them is only looking sweeter as the year progresses. Hope they beat undefeated Northern Illinois next week.
-
I'm starting to grow more and more scared that they will do that. After a bowl game this year and next year we should have plenty of money to bring in teams like Idaho for a money game of our own.

2012 was the 5-game home schedule.

The way we play at home I completely feel the same way.

In the era of spread offenses, defenses have to specialize in capitalizing on turnover opportunities and, most importantly, being able to bend and not break. We have gotten very good at that and Skladany has been just about all we could ask for. Great defensive mind.

I expect us to stack the box like crazy. They have a freshman running back from El Paso who is at 800 yards rushing for the season already, and this kid is a bit of a dual-threat.

The only conference that could be better for us at this point is the Big 12. Maybe the AAC, but that's a big maybe. Personally I'd rather be in CUSA, especially since AAC isn't even an AQ conference and that was the major appeal for schools like Houston to want to go to that conference in the first place.

Big time. They're putting the kid into a tough situation for his first game too. He's a sub 6 foot qb starting his first game as a true freshman. Skladany is going to frustrate him.

Western Michigan is having a rough year but that's still impressive. Hopefully if we being them in they can give a little resistance.
-
Nichols state is just about the worst school for sports in all of division 1. If we bring them in it should be in the 40s to 0 at half. With SMU being at Apogee I think we should have a good shot there, even with all the newbies. At least 2-2 heading into conference play would set us up nicely again.

Tee Goree lists UNT as favorite

If you work for UNT be careful what you say to recruits. A lot of bs violations out there -
La tech should be a home game next year.
-
Worrying about recruiting? Nah, nobody is. Just excited that this season and new conference has given us a little sneak peak at some recruiting success and we have plenty more to come with about 16 spots left on our board.
-
For sure. It looks like we may have gotten to the point in our program where we don't need large JUCO overhauls, but quality JUCO DT's are the highest demanded JUCOs and they sure wouldn't hurt. Other than that we should be good unless we could snag a game-changing JUCO like James Jones has been.

Just an overview of how signing day can and probably will go. We have 17 scholarship seniors and about 77 total scholarship players on the roster. This means we have 25 scholarships available, which is the maximum that can be signed in a class, normally. Backtracking - means that if you don't sign the full 25 in a class you can use the remaining spots for mid-term enrollees for the next class. In our case, we signed 23 last year so we can sign 27 this class as long as at least 2 of those signees are enrolled next semester for spring. Connor Means is an early enrollee for 2014 and Anthony Wallace, Oregon transfer, will be as well so that's at least 2. Lineman Avery Fortenberry has been rumored to be a grayshirt so he may be another mid-term enrollee. Either way, we can and probably will sign 27 guys including Anthony Wallace. We had a good summer of getting commits, have been a little quiet since, and I feel like we're going to blow up after the high school season is over with the on-field success we've had. Expect about 15-16 more commits.

I was thinking they were D1 for some reason. Clarke was a JJ signee during early signing period but he's still one of the 5 high school kids who've come in or been signed by Benford. Even though he wasn't Benford's recruit, I don't like the inability to keep Overlander and Hardwick or be able to suit up Nunn, Friar, and Wesley in green, even if Friar and/or Nunn shouldn't have been takes in the first place. Our roster is very top heavy with 7 juniors (assuming Taylor doesn't get three more years), 3 seniors, 1 sophomore and potentially 0 freshman because of this.

It does sort of sound like a little more than just being ineligible to play this year and sit out and be ready for next year. Benford has gotten praise for being a good recruiter while being here despite having very disappointing results on the court. If Wesley doesn't end up playing that'll mean all 5 of his high school signees are not on this team (Hardwick, Overlander, Friar, Nunn, Wesley).

Derek Thompson... 1st ballot UNT Hall of Famer?
BillySee58 replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
I would say guys that took over numerous games and greatly affected almost every game, whether they were having good games or not as good games. That's why I believe Zach Orr and Chancellor are Hall of Famers. Not really going out on a limb there, but they play their butt's off at all times and they affect games no matter what. Even when Chancellor's stats aren't great for a game you know he affected the play calling of the opposing defensive coordinator and special teams which usually opens things up for other players and helps the team. Same thing for Zach. There are some other guys who have HOF potential on this team but they're younger or not quite seniors, but for sure Orr and Chancellor have proven themselves to be those type of game changer/HOFers. Hard to say the next time we'll get guys like Orr or Chancellor, but we will have guys who can change games and are worthy of HOF status in the future. Teams constantly putting 8 and 9 in the box throughout DT's career doesn't bode well for his HOF status.
