Breaking news -- UNT lands QB Caleb Chumley
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
What argument? I hate the argument that you should start an older guy over a freshmen because he might have growing pains. That's a bad argument to me, especially with the way young guys have been performing at qb, as you said. You play the guy who can give you the better chance of winning. Maybe the young guy throws an extra pick here and there, but if he leads you to more points and scoring drives then the other guy was the one turning the ball over more in reality (on downs). That wasn't the argument that CBL was making. He was saying tap the brakes on anointing Dajon the starter for the next three years who will take us to new heights as a program. Not that he can't be successful as a redshirt freshman (assuming he gets the hardship waiver/medical redshirt like it seems he will). FWIW, I think Dajon has that potential as well. But I'm in the boat with CBL that I need to see him win the job first and show something outside of garbage time. -
Breaking news -- UNT lands QB Caleb Chumley

This kid wouldn't be walking on. He would grayshirt, or someone else would grayshirt to make room. Maybe grades, but that didn't sound like the problem according to Vito. Sounded like an issue of room in the class. -
I love the fact that most of our "cherries on top" have been popping since back in the summer. Getting guys on board like Fonzale, Garner early and guys like the Carthage boys, Andrew Jones, and Ivery during the football season has been great for class cohesion. Plus we didn't have to wait until recently to see we had a good class going. I hope going forward that we continue to get quality guys on board earlier and earlier. Signing day will be shortly followed by Junior Day on February 8th and we will continue to reap the benefits of our momentum on the field and in recruiting in the impending months. With events like Talon Talent and the Friday Night Lights camp I believe that the summer of 2014 is something we can all look forward to.

Breaking news -- UNT lands QB Caleb Chumley

No, but we have legitimate D1 coaches who can teach this kid and get his technique down at either position. Marcus Smith was a wide receiver in high school but the coaches have worked with him and his blocking has made tremendous strides in just a few years, including one in which he missed about 2/3 of the year due to injury. If he played tight end he would likely not be asked much as far as blocking, at least early on. But he has the size and athleticism to get up to the second and third level and be a guy who could help lay a block downfield that could spring run plays for long gains. Also has the size to block defensive ends or at least help a tackle get the end while he combos up to the next level, but that is what would take the most time. I think we'll see more of that "6th offensive lineman" type role at tight end from Wylie Reinhardt in the upcoming years, a la Andrew Power. We wouldn't need that from him from him right away, but if he could progress similar to the way Marcus has then that would be a major success and this guy could be a weapon in the run and the pass game. -

Again, his commitment was likely conditional on him being given the chance to play qb. Happens all the time in recruiting and when kids want to be given the chance to play qb, they will often cross schools off their list who are not giving them that chance. Even if they are higher profile schools like Oregon State in this case and Mizzouri, at the time. Of course he is more suited for tight end. But if he was set on playing tight end than he likely would've committed to Mizzouri or Oregon State a while back. -
Monday afternoon recruiting update (X Washington)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
He checked in at 6'2.5" and 249 lbs and I think that was during his visit in Houston. I also think he said he weighed over 250 but cut a little weight for wrestling. He's a big boy and DE all the way IMO. -
'15 Iowa DE Anthony Nelson (interest)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Wow. No, I said All-division. Just said I would imagine it's comparable to all-district. But wow, all-state honors are very impressive. Sorry for not looking into Iowa football more intently before posting that. Nelson has a teammate that just committed to Iowa and another committed to Northern Iowa. http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Ross-Reynolds-144107;_ylt=Aqxz.l1Z0YBHiAauFsWBI_dGPZB4 Also plays basketball with a 6'10" Pepperdine commit named Nate Gehring. Apparently his high school basketball team goes 6'10", 6'8", and 6'7" (Nelson) in their front court. -

BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
No. Played on varsity this year. Where'd you see JV? He was 1st team all division up there in Iowa according to his highlights. Not sure how all that works up there in Iowa or how prestigious an honor that is. Likely pretty comparable to 1st team all district over here. -
Breaking news -- UNT lands QB Caleb Chumley
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Not a WR because we are already bringing in 4 stud wide receivers this class (2 outside receivers and 2 inside receivers) and Chumley weighs 240 lbs. Matchup nightmare potentially if he continues to work on his speed and route running. He is a very natural pass catcher which is often overlooked. Replying to Ben, can't say I know for a fact but it seems as though the coaches offered him a chance to play qb in order to give us a better chance of landing him. No loss in letting him try qb, and if the coaches can develop him then he could be a special one there for us. If not he would likely redshirt anyways, and he can be moved to tight end then. Possibly defensive end but tight end is a little more likely. -
Being a grown up doesn't mean you're a man. Don't get it twisted, Emmitt.

MGB: Tuesday night recruiting notes, thoughts
BillySee58 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
X and a revolution. Go figure. I feel like this could be a signing day decision. Exciting and nerve racking. Good news is we already have a great class, no matter who fills the final spot/spots. -
2015 HS - Emmanuel Nzekwesi - 6'7 PF
BillySee58 replied to NT03's topic in UNT Basketball Recruiting
With 7 scholarship spots to fill in the 2015 class, would be nice to get some guys locked up early. -
Defensive end from Waukee, Iowa. Listed at 6'7" 215 lbs. Very big frame to grow into, obviously. Reports interest from us. Can't help but wonder if there's a connection with Mac. Invited to Iowa's junior day. http://iowa.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?sid=940&script=%2Fcontent%2Easp&cid=1597623 Maybe nothing comes of this but someone to keep an eye on. Especially if he does turn out to have some connection with Coach Mccarney. Monday afternoon recruiting update (X Washington)

As greenbat said in the another thread I started of a 2015 kid we offered, you get 0% of the kids you offer. It's always good to go after these types of kids early on and try to get them on campus for camps and junior day. If they like it then we can hang around. As mentioned in another thread, we are seeing cases of guys who get offered by schools but wait out the recruiting process. Not a bad decision, but NCAA only allows schools to sign 25 kids per class. If schools fill up their signing classes early and don't have room for guys who want to commit late in the process then those guys are forced to look elsewhere. When those 4-stars are forced to look elsewhere you want to be a school that they think of first as far as who made an impression on them. Then you get them for a visit in January and who knows? As long as the 25 scholarship/class cap exists we need to go after all these guys and save a few spots for guys in January who couldn't commit to bigger programs because their classes were full.

Look at his full offer list and timeline section on his 247 profile.http://247sports.com/Recruitment/Ryan-Newsome-32263/RecruitInterests Just reported the offer from us today. The recruiting services aren't quick to acknowledge an offer from "North Texas" mainly because we don't have a rivals board or a moderated scout board being used. That's why ESPN and definitely 247 are the best recruiting websites for schools like us. ESPN has local guys following recruiting over here and 247 is pretty solid too. Rivals is still #1 overall nationally in my book, but for us in particular ESPN and 247 essentially care more for us.

Aledo standout athlete. Helped lead them to a state championship. Dynamic playmaker whose stock is going up pretty high. We offered. https://twitter.com/ryanbartow/status/428193639676665857 http://247sports.com/Player/Ryan-Newsome-30607 http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=7045157 http://rivals.yahoo.com/lsu/football/recruiting/player-Ryan-Newsome-150136 http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/182025/ryan-newsome http://www.hudl.com/athlete/770285/

If I had to guess I'd say Jeffery Wilson is given a grayshirt offer unless X doesn't commit and Chumley decides to not wait on us. If we got neither of them then Wilson would have a spot in our 2014 class and wouldn't have to grayshirt. I still don't see why we don't have room for Chumley and X. We definitely have enough overall scholarships, but by my count we also have enough spots in our 25 per class. 16 current high school commits, 2 JUCOs, 1 FBS transfer, 1 grayshirt, and 3 walkons put on scholarship. 23, then X and Chumley or Wilson and Chumley. Must not be that open and shut, but I just couldn't tell you what the deal is.
-
Correct. Don't get this lost in the shuffle. Although he would be a great fit at fullback in our offense. Not sure what position SMU and UTSA are selling him on playing. Also, the major reason these kids are no longer having committable offers after being offered early in the process is the 25 scholarship per class max. Before, if a coach had 60 scholarship players who were not seniors then he would have 25 spots in his upcoming signing class. Most coaches would likely sign 30, maybe more, in this case assuming that "the numbers would work themselves out" and 5 players would transfer, quit, or be encouraged to transfer. Players still quit and transfer, but coaches can't sign extra kids to account for this. Because of the 25 scholarship/class cap coaches have to tell kids they don't have room. The big schools sign less kids, and the kids they would've signed trickle down. This will persist as long as the 25 limit exists.

That's what I'm thinking. I think we'll take a good back in 2015. I don't think Ivery will ever be asked to carry the ball more than 15 times in a game. But I do think he'll be special here.

DL Xavier Washington 6-1, 238 4.85 Cedar Hill (offer)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
We could have 3 guys with Ivy League offers in this clas if X joins Jalen Montgomery and Chris Miles. Not to mention the fact that all these commits seem very level headed and smart. Leading the conference in all-conference players and members of the academic all-conference team would have a nice ring to it. -
2014 OL Brad Lundblade (Liberty Christian)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
That's good Oregon State offered him. Choosing to pass on offers in favor of walking on at Bama was a very dangerous move. He made a good decision IMO. Especially making that decision before he used up too much of his eligibility. -
2014 OL Brad Lundblade (Liberty Christian)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
True. It was not stated well, but it was not intended to be a knock on Lundblade's character. Talking about Del Rio's situation. Again, not knocking his character either but from what I've read he was not given the opportunity at Bama as a walkon that he would've been given had he accepted his scholarship to Ok State. -
Yeah, Moore is only rated on ESPN. Smith is rated a 2-star, so it doesn't really help us. Him and Greer are both sort of projects as far as JUCOs go. They have the measurable but aren't rated as high by recruiting services because they don't have the sustained production on the JUCO level. Andrew Jones is a 5.3 2-star but is still listed as a NIU commit. Shows you how much rivals cares about programs like us and NIU.
