  1. For me, it would take a win over one of the top 5 teams. To give me faith in him, short term. Other than those top 5 teams, we stack up favorably, talent wise, with every other team in the conference and beating them doesn't say we're overachieving. Just would be a sign of not underachieving, which is a good thing in its own. My biggest doubt in Benford is long term, especially once our 7 current juniors graduate after next season. We haven't gotten much production from our posts, and that is mainly a result of how late in the process they have all been signed. It's one thing to have to resort to 5 late signees with 3 starters returning, but to need 7 to come last minute while returning zero starters (which may be the case after next season) would be extremely tough to recover from. He needs to lock up some good players early who will actually make it to campus. JUCO and high school. His track record here scares me with this task.
  2. There is A LOT of benefit to getting commits locked up early. Sure you might not be able to hang on to all of them, but the longer you have a kid locked up, the more not only he, but his parents get settled into the idea of him going to that school. People were nervous about our chances of keeping Fonzale Davis because it was so early, but it ended up helping that we locked him up so early. Another big advantage that happens in the time that we currently live in has to do with social media. You get early commits and they get in the ear's of other prospects to come check out UNT, whether at camps, combines, 7 on 7 tournaments, or especially on twitter. If the kid commits in January of his senior year, he has no time to pull other recruits towards UNT. Plus, with major recruiting websites, kids interested in UNT can see who we have committed. I know you think very little of the star system, but if a kid is interested in UNT and he looks and sees they have a good amount of early commits and they're good/highly rated players it will pique the interest of a 17 year-old kid, since they grew up with the star system. Finally, having a lot of guys locked up by the time your season starts allows you to zero in on the guys you really want. That way you can be more selective later in the process. I'll confess to not having followed recruiting nearly as long as you have, but you can't compare the era of recruiting that we are in to much farther in the past. Social media has completely changed the game and everyone (coaches, players, analysts) acknowledges that. There are plenty of ways to make room for a guy late in the game who falls through the cracks, not to mention you'll still likely have a spot or two open for those guys anyways. The early commits create a great foundation for your class and become ambassadors in the recruiting scene for your school. That is invaluable in today's recruiting.
  3. Read very little into listed 40 times. The two things you should care about for speed are laser-timed 40s and how fast the kid is on the field. He does appear to be very fast, though.
  4. Harris got his first FBS offer from UTSA.
  5. There are 5 teams in this conference with a legitimate shot at winning the CUSA tournament. Talent wise, we're the next team in line.
  6. These guys. http://arizona.scout.com/a.z?s=106&p=8&c=1&nid=7498961 http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-D'Anthony-Hopkins-158870 I like to think this is the year we break through and get some commits in the spring, rather than wait until summer to see a few commits. Although I am expecting a big summer as well after the success of our talon talent and friday night lights camps last year. FWIW, I think Hopkins was a Texas State verbal so probably a good chance he doesn't exactly shut his recruitment down.
  7. I think he'd make a solid kick returner. He doesn't have much experience returning kicks, but if you watch his film his team ran a lot of tunnel screen type plays to Davis. He reads his blocks very well, especially in the open field. Couple that with the moves he can make with the ball in his hands and he could really do some damage in the return game.
  8. Don't worry guys. I'll do the honors. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DnVrSZHnvYY
  9. Tillman Johnson's commitment and recruitment had nothing to do with Xavier Washington falling through. The coaches wanted Tillman regardless.
  10. Cleverbot, IMO.
  11. Agreed. Good find DA, although it's big-time bummer. And yes, as everyone is saying, we just have to be able to start paying the assistants. Wish Joseph and Walters luck, but the work they did in the recruiting trail will benefit us long after their departure this year. Despite all this, I love Mac's ability to replace assistants. Enter Coach Kevin Patrick as the new recruiting coordinator!
  12. Lol, I'll never understand why people still say "could" instead of "couldn't" in this phrase.
  13. Looks like he may be close to committing to TCU. They're using the ole multiple-letters-at-once trick with him as well.
  14. Nice win! Glad to see they were able to finish this one.
  15. Being self righteous is fun, isn't it?
  16. 13-3A special teams MVP http://texashsfootball.com/2014/02/11/2013-all-district-13-3a-team/ Good stuff! First linebacker offer to my knowledge for 2015. Looks like he might be big enough to play inside LB as well.
  17. It's not that he wouldn't be eligible to go to a D1 school, but that he would have to sit out a year if he transferred to a D1 without graduating from the JC. If a guy graduates from a JC, whether he started at a D1 or not, then he can play immediately at a D1 school if he transfers to one. I think risinggreen is right about this. He may be eligible to transfer to UNT despite not graduating from Navarro since he qualified out of high school, but he wouldn't be eligible to play immediately like a JUCO player who graduated from the JC.
  18. Expressing interest in this guy. http://247sports.com/Player/Colton-Moorehead-35585 http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/3696335/colton-moorehead Former teammate of Sir Calvin Wallace, Andrew Tucker, Rex Rollins, and Lairamie Lee at Chapel Hill HS in Tyler, TX. Currently plays for Tyler JC and played the 2013 season there, after redshirting in 2012 at Midwestern State.
  19. Former Trinity Trojan and current Tyler Junior College player Mote Maile has been offered by us per Gabe Brooks. Looks like he played at Trinity early in his high school career and finished up in California. Obviously played good competition here in the DFW, but played very good competition in California as well. Likely being recruited as a strong side defensive end. Also has played tight end. JUCO highlights and junior/senior high school highlights at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburgh, CA: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/473076/motekiai-maile--43 http://northtexas.scout.com/a.z?s=353&p=8&c=1&nid=7635328
  20. Yeah, I think you may be right about that. Also, yes to an NCTC football program.
  21. If he's transferring from a JUCO, regardless of whether he played there or not, then he wouldn't have to sit out a year. Could be eligible to start playing this season as a redshirt sophomore.
  22. Happy birthday guys! Have a good one!
  23. I can't wait to take Fred as my adopted player for 2014.
