Kelvin Gaines leaving UNT for pro career
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Another thing this move does is make our 2015 recruiting class potentially smaller. Maybe just 6 spots to fill next year, rather than 7. But that's not how it has worked under Benford. In 2013 we only NEEDED to fill 5 spots with 4 seniors and Tony Mitchell, but after departures we ended up signing 7 guys (really we signed 11 guys, with 4 not making it in). This year we only NEEDED to fill 4 spots with 3 seniors and 1 open scholarship. So far we already have signed 5, and it just doesn't feel like we're done.- 56 replies

MGB: breaking news -- UNT lands JUCO forward Mohammed Ahmed

Pretty impressive progress as a 3-point shooter. Went from not attempting any 3s as a freshman to going 22-46 from deep as a sophomore. -

Honestly, our best bet is just to go small at this point anyways. Especially if you're going after guys with no other offers. 6'9" guys with no other offers are very rarely the players who will help a team turn around a team with among the most unproductive posts in the conference. -

Kelvin Gaines leaving UNT for pro career
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
How would his transfer eligibility have worked. He came here with the rare case of not just being a grad transfer, but being a grad transfer with 2 years of eligibility remaining. That grad transfer rule works by saying that you have to transfer because the school you got your degree from did not offer the grad program that you want. He couldn't make that claim anymore, so I don't think he could transfer if he wanted to.- 56 replies

BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Yeah. I just don't see us getting someone over 6'7" who is actually good as long as Benford is here. Take a look at Gaines' production, and the 6'9" JUCO post who we're looking at. Either go with small lineups all the time or put space eaters with little skill in.- 56 replies

Basketball recruiting tidbit (UNT sees Paris JC forward)
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
No, not unless they offer him. As they have yet to at this point. However, if we do get him, he can play with a chip on his shoulder knowing that they passed on him. -

Seeing as 2K will allow you to make these changes that NCAA 2010 will not, and that Tony Benford is our coach; looks like you purchased the wrong college basketball game. -

Big step up from what his 2013 high school signees averaged in JC ball this past season. http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2013-14/div1/players/joshfriarn3nb http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2013-14/div1/players/tonynunnpypg -
Can the 2014 UNT Football Team Surpass 2013?
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
From what I've seen of their qb, I think we should stack the box and force him to beat us with his arm. Their defense is pretty fast. That's what scares me about them. This will sound pretty homer of me, but we were better than a 9 win team last year, at least against that schedule. All of our wins were pretty resounding and we looked like we were clearly the better team IMO, and the losses, outside of Georgia, were very close (6,3, and 8 points), included us giving up non-offensive touchdowns, and really should've been wins. At least two of them. My point is, if our offense can take a step up, it's alright if our defense takes a step back, and maybe our team as a whole. We can win just as many games as last year, or more, without necessarily being a better or more talented football team. But who knows? Maybe we will be that as well. -
Mid Spring UNT QB Poll: Who will start @UT?
BillySee58 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I've been wondering lately (with this incessant A&M pro day coverage) if our staff would've started Johnny Manziel back in 2012, if they were coaching that A&M team. Offseason is fun.- 42 replies

Interesting that our staff never offered Nicholson. He has blown up. Up to 11 offers including Ole Miss, Baylor, and Duke to name a few. Wonder what our coaches saw in him/didn't see in him while he was here.

6'2" 210 athlete. Had 986 yards (406 rushing, 582 receiving) and 20 scores (9 rushing, 11 receiving) last year. Holds offers from TCU, Texas Tech, SMU, Arizona State, Colorado State, and now us. http://247sports.com/Player/DeAndre-McNeal-30222 http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Deandre-McNeal-152141?colleges=show http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/188224/deandre-mcneal http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=7233144 Highlights: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/671741/deandre-mcneal

Teammate of Fonzale Davis. Primarily a hooper prior to this past season, in his first year playing receiver, Thomas had 38 catches for 707 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns. Thomas also holds offers from SMU, Maryland, Colorado State, and Arkansas State, as well as us. He has some big-time P5 interest as well, but likely needs to polish his skills as a receiver before those offers come in. If he does, his offer list could blow up this summer, during, or after his senior season. http://247sports.com/Player/JF-Thomas-36214 http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-J.F.-Thomas-152269 http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=7308451 http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/182044/jf-thomas Highlights: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/2619473/jf-thomas

Beyond The Spring - Spring QB Battle
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think we're asking for a complete overhaul. We ran some uptempo last year. The system was put in place, no reason we can't run it a little more. Use whatever works. Being able to run both and change it up during the game is nice to have. Even nicer to have is an offense that plays to the strengths of your players. If that means running a reasonable increase of uptempo offense compared to last year, let's do it. -
Beyond The Spring - Spring QB Battle
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree that it doesn't matter, as long as we win. But I also think that our offense growing more bland as the season went along is what cost us the CUSA West division championship. IMO, we got used to coasting and running an offense while having a lead. Then when we needed our offense to step up against UTSA, they didn't. I hate talking about the UTSA game, but our defense got a lot of the blame for that game. I know they gave up a lot of 3rd-down conversions, but they only gave up 21 points. Very disappointing that we couldn't score 21 points at home. DT looked great running the uptempo offense. If our new qb looks much better running the uptempo offense (a la DT), I think it'd be a shame if we didn't use it some more. -
Yes, Holmes is a DL all the way. I have no idea why ESPN has him listed as an OLB. Wheeler could play either LB or DE in college. He plays LB for Skyline though, and I'd consider him more of a linebacker prospect, so yeah. That's another LB offer. Thanks for reminding me. I honestly don't have Wheeler on my radar because his offer list is about as good as it gets.
-
Picked up a TCU offer. Still not many offers out to linebackers for us. So far just Moore, Jordan Williams from Paris, and Chris Orr, to my knowledge are the only linebacker offers.
