Another follow up.http://texas.247sports.com/Article/Texas-Longhorns-offense-work-in-progress-based-on-open-practice-30206198 Man, if Shipley doesn't play then Texas may be starting a walkon receiver against us. And with Donald Catalon's injury, if he can't go against us, then they're down to Malcolm Brown, a not 100% Jonathon Gray, and 2-star true freshman D'onta Foreman.
-
Yeah, I just saw that too. Weird. He wasn't even mentioned as suspended against us. Maybe just a mistake.
-
Woah. More notable, that report says Kennedy Estelle has been dismissed. I missed that. Last I read, was this article saying him, Daje Johnson, and Desmond Harrison were down to their last strikes. I knew Harrison and Johnson were suspended for at least the game against us, but I never knew Estelle was dismissed.http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/07/report-three-more-texas-football-players-facing-suspension.html/ Those two were expected to be the starting tackles this year for them, on an offensive line low in experience. And their backups are both very inexperienced. I believe one is a redshirt freshman and the other is a redshirt sophomore who hasn't played at all. As for Gray, he's coming off tearing his Achilles. He should be good to go against us, but that's a serious injury. Should be interesting to see how effective he can be in his first game back.

Another injury. WR/TE/QB Miles Onyegbule suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the year. He played qb during the spring game, but with Ash back he was likely to go back to receiver/tight end.

Coach Chico comments on all of the UNT 2014 Practices

This always happens anytime comparisons are made to top college players or NFL players. People overreact, misconstrue the comparison, and read/hear what they want. GMG said Wilson was an inch shorter and 20 lbs lighter than Adrian Peterson coming out of high school. And referenced that they are both from East Texas. And I said I saw some Reggie Bush in his highlights. Not Bush caliber, but his elite one-cut change of direction abilities, particularly in the open field, and his size out of high school reminded me of Bush. Not his top end speed or production at high levels. Apparently this was read as "Jeffery Wilson is the next Patrick Cobbs/Jamario Thomas." -

For me, it's his HS film. I'm not saying he's as good as those guys, or that he's proven himself against competition anywhere near college level. People have such a hard time grasping this concept. But there's more to highlight films than just good play, bad play, touchdown, good competition, bad competition. I don't care if his highlights are against his 2A school's scout team in practice. You can see his elite cutting and change of direction abilities. This conversation was had in one of Wilson's threads last year in the recruiting forum. BigDanTeague brought it up, and he was spot on. -

The guy I compare him to more is Reggie Bush. I know these are overwhelming comparisons, but I've always seen Bush in Wilson's highlights. A poor man's Bush, not the top end speed, albeit. But they are similarly built and they both have elite change of direction ability. Wilson's one-step cutting ability is tremendous. If he would've played in the metroplex he would've had plenty of Big12 offers. He's clearly not Bush or Peterson. But he certainly does have ability far beyond his rankings or offers. Was very underexposed and great job by the staff finding this kid. Because a lot of other coaches didn't. -
Interview with Jimmerson and James Jones after the practice. I found it kind of interesting that Jalen Montgomery was playing inside linebacker in one of the drills. This post has been promoted to an article

I can't tell you for sure what it means for Rollins, but for Wilson it means he's one hell of a back. -

Harris and Jeffery Wilson, 5 out of 6 days. Also, walkon true freshman AJ Ezzard. We are very stacked at RB, but getting Ezzard to walkon was impressive. Very good back. Was very surprised he wasn't getting any scholarships throughout the process. -
Yeah, it seems a lot like the Berglund situation last year. One year they're impressing the heck out of everyone: Berglund winning scout team POTY, Williams pushing DT as a true freshman and Coach Mac saying he will not redshirt. The next year neither are able to take over the job because of various issues, not related to talent. If Kevin Sumlin was our coach, Brock and Dajon likely would've been our qb. Alternatively, if Coach Mac would've been at A&M Johnny Manziel likely would've never played. Just two different philosophies. Like TFLF said, Coach Mac and crew are not handing over starting positions, period. Not just play a kid because he's talented. And they won us 9 games last year, which is a lot more than this school traditionally wins. So we darn sure better be grateful. He has more than earned that. I just hope the coaches open up this offense a little. That's when DT was at his best. Being too bland got us behind in games, like getting shut out the first half at Tulane or getting out scored 21-13 at home against UTSA. We have a plethora of playmakers. And Mcnulty and Greer are no slouches either. Plus the line we have, this offense could be explosive.

Yeah, that's the main reason. He just likes to use us fans on this board as motivation, too. Whether we're critical of them or don't talk about them enough. I just feel like it hurts the relationship the players have with the fan base from time to time. More of "I'm going to prove them wrong," than "I'm going to do this for the fans that come out and support us." But whatever works. -

Capper playing the "under appreciated and overlooked by fans" card again. Seems like he reads this board almost as much, if not more than RV. -

Went on a California recruiting road trip. Visited San Diego State (who offered) and Fresno State (who had already offered prior. Seems like his parents had him hold off on his commitment so he could weigh all his options. Hopefully we're still on top. -

Coach Mac talked about being impressed by all the receivers, RBs, d-linemen, and linebackers. Good chance both d-linemen don't redshirt (DT Tauaalo and DE Johnson), at least one linebacker doesn't redshirt, if not both (Garner or Montgomery), and we all know the receivers have a great shot at not redshirting. Could be a lot of guys but Coach Mac has shown that he doesn't use a lot of redshirts on linebackers and secondary kids. I think we'll see a lot of true freshmen this year. It's seemed that way for a while, but the freshman's supposed performances are reinforcing that. -

Yup. What I said before camp started was that I thought the coaches would redshirt Wilson, then he'd play a little next year and take over as the starter in 2016, after Jimmerson leaves. With the other younger backs like Evans and Ivery being speed guys, Wilson has the size/growth potential to be the go-to guy and pound the ball between the tackles while we try to get the other backs in open space. Because of the other younger guys being smaller backs, it would help if we could redshirt Wilson and save him for after Pegram and Jimmerson graduate. But if he cracks the top 3 somehow, then it'll be hard to redshirt him. -
Chancellor didn't have any other offers, so probably not him. There's a chance we still could've gotten Orr. Dunbar would've been harder, as he did have BCS offers. To me, the biggest difference this will make would be with non-committable offers and expiring offers. Sometimes kids get P5 offers but they aren't committable, and that school is slow-playing them. Other times they do hold committable offers from P5 schools, but they choose to wait out the process and those offers are no longer good. 100 scholarship would allow schools to take these kids instead of just offer and slow play them. First they'd have to get rid of the 25 scholarships per class cap though. But yes, this would make things extremely difficult on us.

There goes that man again. Jeffery Wilson. Seems like the coaches are going to have a heck of a time redshirting him. -
This is all becoming a huge mess

Yeah, pretty sure those are all away games. This article by Vito says Tech, Ok State, and Arkansas are all away games. Not sure about SFA, but they came to the pit last year so likely over there this time. Iona and Creighton are supposed to be the marquee home games this year.http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/07/notes-and-tidbits-from-the-mean-green-club-event.html/

Starting back up in the 2015-2016. First game back will be at UTA's new arena. http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/080814aaa.html

With Texas hurting so bad at receiver, if we were to knock Ash out of the game, they would be extremely limited in the passing game. They already may be pretty limited and secondary appears to be the strength of our defense right now.
