  1. I'm waiting for research on how many qbs tried out for Deer Park HS football while Means was there.
  2. Benford has to win recruiting battles to be deemed a good recruiter. Getting guys on campus is a good step, but he needs to real them in. Last season we signed 4 guards who didn't have any other offers, besides Greg White-Pittman who had a New Orleans offer. Jeremy Combs was a good get, and Muhammad Ahmed claimed other offers but hard to be for sure, since nobody else showed up on his recruiting profiles. As for Reese, he was a great get but he got kicked off A&M and needed a home. Not sure we really beat out a bunch of other schools for his services. But yeah, getting him eligible, even for just half a season, would be huge. Lewis sure would be a big step in that direction though.
  3. I was really, really hoping we could redshirt Means. Seems like the staff is high on him, he did look very good in the spring game, but I've said this before. He's a year removed from completing just 49% of his passes and having 10 tds against 9 ints, against high school play. He does appear to have the tools, but he needs time to develop and get fully adjusted to the speed of the game. We saw what happens when a QB isn't ready for the speed of a D1 game, on Saturday. That being said, if he's our best option then we need him on the field.
  4. As far as I know. And Fonzale Davis. Denucci was here and did practice (even if for just 1 practice). Don't think you can exclude a guy from your recruiting class just because they quit mid-way through the season. Or at the very beginning. 2013 signee OL Cody Nelson quit during last season but we didn't get to backcount and use his spot. So I think it's the same for Denucci. Davis I'm not sure since he never actually made it. We did sign him, and I'm pretty sure it's just 25 signees. Not enrollees.
  5. http://www.holyturf.com/2011/08/why-walk-ons-earn-a-scholarship/ "First, teams get a total of 85 scholarships each year and only 25 initial counters, which is the term used for players new to the program. The NCAA actually calls a scholarship a full grant-in-aid as defined in bylaw 15.02.5. A full grant-in-aid is financial aid that consists of tuition, fees, room and board, and required course-related books. Initial counters are freshmen and transfers on scholarship. If a school gives a walk-on a scholarship during his first two seasons, he is considered an initial counter and must be counted toward the 25 limit and the 85 limit." This article is from prior to the 2011 season, when the 25 max scholarships per class rule was about to go into effect in the SEC (signing day 2012 class) and when the rest of the NCAA knew they would have to do it for the next year's recruiting class (signing day 2013 class).
  6. Certainly by their play on the field against Texas, can't argue that. But through the coaches eye, just based on how they talk about Greer and Mcnulty, I think they've earned another shot with the coaches. Whether they truly earned it or are going to do anything of value with it, I would be shocked if the coaches don't give them another chance. At least Greer. As for Wade, he only played for us one season (2013) as a walkon before being put on scholarship. So he has to count as an "initial counter" in one of our recruiting classes. Can't back-count him into 2014, since that class filled up to 25 with Dash and Denucci, so he'd have to be apart of the 2015. Unless there's some exception for players not put on scholarship until their senior year, but not to my knowledge.
  7. He's actually our 8th 3-star, when you factor in Zavian Bingham who was rated a 3-star on scout. But yeah, Beecham is our 7th 3-star on ESPN. Ashton Preston is our only commit to be rated 3-stars on multiple recruiting websites (ESPN and Scout). Don't look at the recruiting classes of the schools we play every year?
  8. Thanks you very much for the info Mr. Riddle! Hope everything works out well for Chris and he has a great senior season, on and off the field. You're one of the posters most fervent against second guessing this coaching staff and your doing so against them not offering a kid with no other offers? Not meant as a personal jab against this kid, and I know he missed his entire junior year. Just as a general statement. That being said I hope he does blow up and we find out a little more about what we're going to do with this qb situation.
  9. Thanks Greg and everyone else. Fun stuff. Someone might be able to help me out on this, but has Eric Keena been here since 2012? I know he was here last year and didn't play, but if he was also here in 2012 then he would not count towards our class. The rest I'm fairly confident will count. Banogu is the only other one I'm thinking may have been here in 2012, but I don't think he got here until after the season was over. Never got official word on whether or not Sam Rice came in on scholarship or walked on, but he likely came in on scharship.
  10. 3*s on ESPN. They're giving out 3-stars like hot cakes lately. Beecham got bumped to a 3-star as well. For example, 13 out of 14 of Rice's commits are rated 3-stars.
  11. Was given a rating of 72 on ESPN. Good for 3-stars. ESPN has now rated 6 of our 12 commits as 3-stars.
  12. What I loved about what Jub said, is that right after Mccarney went on about making it a rivalry because it has been one-sided to this point. Jub let him and everyone know we've beaten them the last two times they've come to Denton. Coach Mac likes to talk about doing stuff here that hasn't been done before him. Well, instead of him having no pressure to do something that has never been done, he knows that we have a two-game home winning streak against them in Denton on the line. Yeah we need to make the all-time head to head record more respectable. But this rivalry does have some substance from each side.
  13. Your link has the roster. Click on Russell's profile. It says 3rd year (redshirt) sophomore. He graduated high school and signed with Baylor in 2012. Johnson graduated high school and signed with Baylor in 2013.http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Seth-Russell-110674 http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Chris-Johnson-114968;_ylt=Ajw.QZLllJs5G5ziCv62Vc1DPZB4 You may be the best person I've ever seen at continuing to argue when there is undeniable proof that you are wrong. Unless you're talking about their actual age, which has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. Like grade classification does.
  14. They're not the same age. Russell is a redshirt sophomore, not a true sophomore. So he's a year older/grade above Johnson, a redshirt freshman. Not going to continue to argue with you about Baylor's qb situation. But Briles plays qbs who can take over games and put up huge numbers. Russell didn't look like that guy. Johnson looked like he has more of that ability. Russell looked like a game manager judging by his play and the playcalling they had with him in. I don't see Briles starting a game manager. He just hasn't in the past. Anyways, he has a chance to beat out Russell and be a 3-year starter at Baylor. It is completely realistic and in his control. North Texas can't make a good enough pitch to beat that out right now. And the qbs they sign after a guy like Johnson aren't going to affect that. You can't say "come here because you aren't going to beat out the guys they're going to sign after you." It's just not how recruiting works. And they do already have studs locked up for 2015 and 2016.
  15. If I'm a major program planning on scheduling North Texas in the future then I'm thinking twice about that. Maybe we don't have the offense to compete with those schools, but if I'm them I wouldn't want to play a defense this tough in non-conference. You aren't supposed to lose your starting center and qb to a team you're paying $800K+ to bring in. We roughed up Gurley and Marshall last year against UGA and we all know how lucky LSU was that Mettenberger didn't get a concussion.
  16. Didn't look that great to me. And his stats weren't great either. 13-23, 124 yards, 1 td:1 int, and a very underwhelming 5.4 yards/attempt. If Johnson is the real deal he should beat Russell out. If I had to guess looking from a glance I'd say Russell is the backup because he's older and he knows the offense well. But Johnson is more likely to be the big play qb Briles wants in his high-octane offense. Point is, if a qb is good enough to be the only quarterback taken in his class at a P5 school then that's what matters most to them. They will have a chance to win a starting job at some point. Whether or not they win it is a different story, but you're not going to convince these kids to go to North Texas over a school like Baylor if they could be the only qb taken in either class. Not right now.
  17. He's a redshirt freshman. Bryce Petty is a senior. If this kid is consistently good then he has a great shot at being their starting qb next season when they're looking for a replacement for Petty in the spring. Because their current backup didn't look great. Johnson will be a sophomore next season. That would give him three seasons as a starter in that Baylor offense. That would be playing, at Baylor. As for Petty, he sat the bench for 4 seasons before becoming the starter. Technically 3, but 4 when you think about it. Graduated high school in 09, grayshirted that season, redshirted in 2010, was third string in 2011, was a backup in 2012, and then became a starter last year in 2013.
  18. "Hey Mr. Vaughn, I thought you were starting tonight." "I did." "Oh sorry. I didn't turn the game on until the second inning."
  19. I honestly think Greer will and should start. If he won that job he deserves a chance to redeem himself in front of his home crowd. Get him some quick, easy throws to guys like Carlos Harris, Darvin Kidsy, and Jeffery Wilson. Get that completion percentage up, let those guys YAC it up, and get the crowd behind him and we could see a completely different Josh Greer from what we saw yesterday. That being said, if we still can't throw the ball with Greer or Mcnulty then Dajon really should be given a shot.
