I know he's just a redshirt freshman and he hasn't played any meaningful snaps, but I'm predicting 7-5 at worst with Dajon, if he stays healthy, and the most passing TDs we've had under Coach Mac. I also think he's better than what UTSA and Rice have. But that's just to me and there's a lot that has to go right for all, much less any, of that stuff to happen.

Make the Nicholls game a competition at QB

Please tell me this is what you heard, not just what you hoped. -
looks like Schilleci will be back as planned

Burning a true freshman qb's redshirt in order to backup a redshirt freshman is a good way to get that kid to transfer out. That's assuming DW gets the job.- 16 replies

Tee Goree is ok and still on the team
BillySee58 replied to eulessismore's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, if Dajon does get the job then I'm perfectly fine burning that redshirt off Tee, as long as he gets solid PT and gets the ball. I'm hoping Chico keeps calling those zone reads and opens up the offense with Dajon. Because he will. He did on Thursday. That would really help out with receiver and qb recruiting. Like you said, if we keep going with this offense that has us at the bottom of the FBS in passing then no qb recruit with good guidance would choose us over any good schools. -
Nicholls state may be one of the worst sports universities in all of Division 1. They're at or near the bottom of the Southland in almost every sport. Football, as evidenced in this thread, is no exception. We definitely should do whatever we want in this game. Especially on offense.

Tee Goree is ok and still on the team

Another poster and I were discussing this the past week as well. My take is/was that if we kept things the way they were then we should just redshirt Tee. However, if Dajon does fully takeover this next game then I would consider it. Even then, I'm still expecting him to take a redshirt after maintaining it through the first 3 games (1/4) of the season. If Tee does redshirt then his 4 years will be 2015-2018. Not redshirting it would be 2014-2017. So the trade off by burning the redshirt would be the 2018 season in exchange for playing the rest of the 2014 season. Without Dajon I think you just redshirt him and hope our qb situation is better in 2018 than now and that he'll be able to contribute more then than now, without hurting this year's team. With Dajon at qb you might have to consider that Tee would have Dajon for the rest of 2014 but not 2018. Plus, maybe he really helps give this team a little boost. But yeah. Still thinking redshirt is likely but I would not be opposed to burning it now if Dajon is at qb and we would actually use Tee a decent amount. -
We passed on him. Too short. Mac has only offered tall qbs (6'2"+, usually 6'3"+). Bogenschutz did come here for a junior day. Coach Mac wants a tall qb so we can run power under center and play action. Tall qbs can see over the line better. If you run a shotgun predicated offense it can mask the disadvantage of being a short qb. But that's not Mac's style.

You're making it sound like this is your guess alone. Not trying to come off as rude, but everyone knows this is the case and dilemma for Coach Mccarney. He has come out and said it. Travis brought up a great point earlier. How far is he really in the doghouse? Obviously not too far, since he has played in two games and went in last night while Mcnulty did not. And he's been going to practice enough to know how to give the signals on the sideline. I get that you don't want to leave bad precedent with your players, but IMO he was punished. You mess up and slack off, guess what? You don't get to start. Someone else will be the starting qb. Well, that someone else had the first crack at being the starting qb and he didn't perform. Really two guys. If DW does take over, Greer and Mcnulty cannot sit there and say "this isn't fair. I worked harder than he did and they still gave him the job." DW was punished by not getting the first crack at things. Greer was rewarded with that. DW had to work his way up and if Greer would've lit it up then. Those guys earned the first shot at things. Did they earn the right to not have to worry about getting pulled in favor of Dajon, no matter how bad they do?

A couple of quick-hit opinions on QBs, attendance

That stat was from prior to last night's game. Navy is the team behind us. And Navy runs the veer (triple option). -
DW and the extra time till Nicholls St.
BillySee58 replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Nah, he's 6'3". Take a look at the team/qbs photo. And I wouldn't undersell his arm or his wheels. Legitimate dual-threat qb and there's some velocity on those throws. -
Since we're talking about the 06 season I figured digging this post up would be fitting, and provide good comic relief after last night. But at the same time remind us that there is no NCAA 15 to pop in and play this game over again. Link to the thread:

It's mind bottling!

Undersized? They had some big boys out there, especially Mr. Butler. Like I said, we had time to throw. When they stopped blitzing in the second half and Greer started having a little success, he had all day to throw. He was getting good pass blocking in the first half too, he just couldn't handle the blitz. Which has been the case all season. We saw a qb on the other team handle the blitz beautifully all night. We didn't play perfect, but that performance was not on the line. Yes, they're starting to gel. I'm referring to pass blocking. Lemon is a great lineman but he's not a prototypical tackle at all. He's only 6'3" and he has struggled outside against speed rushers. See the Tulane game last year and Texas this year. And Mckinney is built for run blocking as well at 350+. They have made solid strides and they're doing their job in the run game as well. They're getting a hat on a hat and creating lanes. That's just not enough which is why they were getting so hot walking off to the sidelines. Wait until this team actually has a normal front to run against and doesn't have to face cover 0 every play. Then everyone will be clamoring about how good the line is and how much improvement they've made from the La Tech game. 77 yards passing on 27 passing attempts. It's amazing how you guys don't realize how bad that is.

The rushing total was hurt by the sacks and the fact that we would only get 1 or 2 rushes per drive before the punt. Seriously? We only have 5 linemen. How do you expect them to block 11 in the box? Everyone just take 2 guys each? In reality it's more like 9 blocking 11, but still. When those 11 have no respect for the passing game there isn't much you can do. Jimmerson had a run where the first level was blocked up great but when he got to the second level there was the rest of the defense packed in tight. Not out wide worrying about the receivers/passing game at all. Wilson had a couple like that as well, as did Pegram. We were doing a decent job getting that first level blocked off and creating a running lane. We just only have so many linemen and they have 11 guys. The QB isn't going to physically block so you need him to block some of those 11 defenders in a different way. By making them respect the passing game. There was none of that.

Bingo.

Yeah, I know your stance. It was directed towards the people missing DT. But I agree on no more Greer.
-
His 8 tds against 10 ints in conference play would indicate against that. Definitely can't argue peaking at the end with that brilliant bowl game. Or we might actually have a playmaker in Dajon. I hate to use the word with how great a leader and competitor the guy was for us, but his numbers did suggest mediocrity. Wishing back mediocrity because we literally have had the worst starting qb in FBS, statistically, is very North Texas of us. UNT90 is one of the posters on here who taught me that.
-
But, but he had 0 interceptions. That's how you win football games. Run the ball, don't turn it over, and play defense. This is football. Not a freak show.
-
Plus, if you want to play, as Emmitt would say, boring ass football then why not do it with Williams? We saw from play 1 that he could hand the ball off. You don't have to go to a full-fledged spread with Dajon. Just do what we did. You have your heavy sets and you can still go shotgun and run the zone read.
-
Wrong. Offensive line did play well, and the receivers were open. Offensive line is starting to gel, but man they were getting frustrated. They were blocking their tails off to no avail. We didn't do a great job getting open when we were 3rd and 10+ but there's not much you can do as an offense in those situations. Williams is 1000X harder to gameplan for than Greer, Mcnulty, or even Thompson. Okay, maybe an exaggeration, but the passing threat plus scrambling threat really opened running lanes. Hope to see more of that.

How sure are we that he missed meetings? And how sure are we that he has missed practices where he wasn't injured? During Coach Mac's radio show when he said he'd missed practices it just sounded to me like he was out because of an injury. When Coach Mac has said in the past that someone "missed practice" it's just his terminology for "couldn't practice because of injury." Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
-
Uh oh. I was wondering why we didn't see anymore of him. I really hope it's not severe, but if it is a season-ending type injury, then he played in just few enough games to apply for a hardship waiver/medical redshirt.

I've been saying for a while that this program is a gamebreaker/all CUSA QB away from being a double-digit win team. I fully believe Dajon will be that guy if our coaches suck up their pride and let him be our guy, and he stays healthy. A healthy Dajon and this team finishes between 8-4 and 10-2. I really don't care what anyone has to say about not overreacting because "it was against the backups." I trust my eyes. Just like I trusted them when I knew exactly what would happen if Greer became starter from the moment we offered him. Same for once we finally put Dajon in. It wasn't just hoping the third-string would be better than the first two. I've seen enough from Dajon before last night to know that's what he's capable of. Dajon had 21 more yards in 7 pass attempts than Greer did in 27. 20 less passes! That's one of the most absurd stats I've ever seen in my life, regardless of who did what against what string defense. I expect a fully rejuvenated defense (and offense based on the way the guys picked up with Dajon in) now that we have a qb who can sustain drives and put up points. I know excuses are stupid, but the defense's reward for forcing a punt was just to be back out 5 plays later.
