  1. Impressive is never what yesterday's performance (stats/production) was intended to be. The skill set, talent, composure, and the way Dajon went about yesterday's performance was impressive and that's what we should've been looking for. Not just stats. Dajon's stats can only be so impressive, but his performance is translatable to when we start playing better opponents. Alternatively, Greer's 9-12 and settling for five field goals against SMU was not a performance that translated well. Dajon also was not playing yesterday to win a job. He won the job once Coach Mccarney announced him as starter. It was to get him some work going into a bye week, followed by games that will be important as far as bowl, division, and conference implications every week going forward. As he represents by far our best chance at doing all three of those things. Tomorrow we start get ready for Indiana, and Dajon has something to build on and continue to find out all the nuances of becoming a division 1 quarterback. Last year we came out very flat offensively, particularly in the passing game, after both of our bye weeks. Dajon will be the major reason on whether we change that or come out flat. But there is reason for all the optimism surrounding him.
  2. Yes he did. The nickname that 1000 people have suggested ever since Dajon first committed.
  3. He and Lemon are going for the consecutive starts record at North Texas. He played the first series to get the start and that was about it.
  4. Yup. I'm feeling good about Rice, especially considering he was a starter at SMU as a true sophomore and did not redshirt as a freshman. Not just a guy. As for the rest of the line, we're in Coach Mccarney's 4th year and he's only started one of his high school offensive line signees in Cyril Lemon during those four years. All the other starters have been Dodge guys, a former walkon (Kirby), and a JUCO transfer (Mckinney). Next year our line, in his fifth year, might be two former walkons (Kirby and Banogu), two transfers (Rice and Epps), and the fifth guy tbd. We need Coach Mac's o-line signees to start getting ready to take over. Especially at tackle. We aren't recruiting any JUCO tackles, so that may be a good sign for the guys we have now. Games like yesterday were great for developing those guys.
  5. That's the lineup we've been running out there for the last two games, whenever Y'Barbo has gone out of the game.
  6. 36 yards in the first half isn't coming out flat. It's called having no passing game. Glad we have one now.
  7. And boom goes the dynamite.
  8. I know Texas Southern wasn't this bad in 2012, but take a look at our stats, especially passing, from the last time we hosted an FCS opponent. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/gamecast?gameId=322520249&version=mobile Dajon has the talent, composure, darn near everything you look for from a skill set perspective. Like Munthe said, expect growing pains, but the kid is a stud and he's a qb who can win us games. You can say what you want about this being Nicholls State and that you'll wait to get excited until he doesn't it against a tough opponent, but if you can't tell how talented he is or how much better he is than our other options, even in the limited sample, then you're not paying good attention. You can't deny this talent.
  9. Dajon with the wind Sunday, Monday, Happy Daj Daj of our lives A Daj to Remember DajOn The Border Dajed and confused Whatever we call him, I just hope he leaves us asking for a Dajencore.
  10. Yeah, I'm not as concerned about the o-line. I'm thinking everyone will be saying how improved the o-line is. They've had plays blocked up well and created lanes only for our RBs only to be met by completely downhill linebackers and safeties. We have seen coverage sacks, sacks because of the blitz, and some sacks/tackles at the LOS because of stepping up and scrambling into blocked d-linemen. These guys are not very tall across the board but they're very big. They're not built like prototypical pass blockers, but they've improved there as the season has progressed. They aren't perfect and still are not playing great, but I expect them to be a strength like we all think of them with normal fronts to block against. Once we start seeing those. Hopefully those key guys get back to full strength.
  11. 300+ yards and 59-0 Knowledge of the playbook won't matter. Not against Nicholls State. Talent and ability will. Over the past 15 years or so we've seen a tremendous advancement in the passing game in college football. We haven't really been the direct benefactor for much of that. Also seen the rise of the redshirt freshman qb over the past 10 years or so, culminating with the last two Heisman winners being rs freshman qbs. Again, we haven't been fortunate to benefit from that either. I think the time for that is now. Defense also notches its first shutout at Apogee in a bounce-back game with a lot of pride on display. If that doesn't happen, not the end of the world. But it's 2014 and I think it's time we experience some of what the rest of the college football world has in recent years.
  12. Talked about a little in this thread this week. A little more extensively in this thread last week.
  13. Give Nate a vote http://texasfootball.com/
  14. Vote for 2015 DB commit Nate Brooks, of Whitehouse. He had 2 picks last week. Vote for him for Mr. Texas football POTW. http://texasfootball.com
  15. Whichever one of them wants tall pocket passer qb, I'm just hoping Dajon has great success and convinces the coaches to go with more of a dual-threat look and put less emphasis on height and more on playmaking ability. Someone posted Greer's high school rivals page. If you're a 6'5" qb and you're getting good exposure in high school, you don't need to be a great qb to get G5 offers.
  16. People just like to argue that exciting football, spread offenses, and dual threat qbs don't actually win. Like when TFLF likes to go on his rants about how the spread doesn't work and how boring football wins games. "Oregon's style hasn't won them a national title yet." Well, how relevant we're they before Mike Belotti got there and started spreading people out? They didn't win a single conference championship from 57-94 (37 years) when everyone was on equal grounds before spread offenses. And Texas Tech, I'm not a huge fan of the air raid, but saying "that freak show would get knocked down when they played real teams like OU and Texas." 1. Texas and OU ran spread offenses 2. Texas Tech won more with Leach than they did before or have since. Tech and Oregon have run variations of the close the gap between the USCs, Texas', and OUs since they can't outrecruit those schools. They can't run through those 240 lb linebackers of those schools, so create an offense to match that big linebacker with a quick slot in the passing game. We too can benefit from this look, and use it to help close the gaps between us and the top CUSA schools, and even P5 schools. I've talked about this before, but all the non-AQ conference schools who made BCS bowls during the BCS era had high-powered passing attacks and did run some form of the spread offense. Doesn't mean we can't still play tough-nosed defense and great special teams.
  17. He has vastly improved from his junior year. Was always very talented but he looks like a completely different football player. Really hope we can hang on here.
  18. Did Kram just nominate himself for a Purple Heart for attending college basketball games?
  19. 4 game win improvement from 2011 to 2012 (when he took over and won the Heisman) begs to differ.
  20. Exactly. Plus less 8-9 man boxes. I know it was against second teamers, but Evans had huge run lanes on the zone reads and I expect more of that. Facing the fronts we had been facing and with our play calls we were not seeing big run lanes, even when we blocked the plays up well.
  21. This is a pretty common misconception. He went 7-5 and 7-7 with Seneca and Seneca had more picks than TDs for Coach Mac. He actually won 9 games the year before Seneca got there, and Seneca was a little out of place in a Coach Mccarney offense. He is the one who wants the tall, pocket passers/game managers. That's a big reason why this decision took as long as it did. Although you do have to commend him for making the move that you could tell was not easy, but was for the better of the team.
  22. I've played against and watched Driphus Jackson (Rice qb) since freshman year of HS. He's a good runner, okay passer, but nothing to worry about with passes downfield. He certainly has improved a lot, but I'm more worried about his running ability against us than I am of him hitting throws downfield, like their QB Mchargue did last year to Jordan Taylor on that deep post route. You may be right about the teams, but I am extremely interested to see how this Mccarney coached team does with a playmaker at qb.
  23. Correct, good sir.
  24. Mostly running in this game will be pointless. We need this game to develop our passing game. We'll win this game regardless so we need to spend it developing our passing game and the chemistry between Dajon and our receivers. Running the ball and shortening the game would be killing precious time and plays that we could use to develop the passing game. Breaking in a new qb this late in the season, we need all those plays and time. I love the zone-read threat Dajon provides us, but I'm even hesitant about calling too many of those plays. If the read key stays home on Dajon and he's forced to handoff then we could see a, let's say, 65-yard touchdown run. Good run, but that's 65 yards we could've worked with to move the ball downfield with our passing game and get that clicking even more. Save the runs for the second half when we should be up by so much that we're only running because of football etiquette, trying to kill the clock and not run up the score.
