If he can just be as good as Kameron Hill was last year then that’ll be huge for the defense.

WTF? UNT loses another d-lineman to portal
BillySee58 replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
I think Hutchins was rotating in with huddle 2. But Rausaw, LeBlanc, and Tashoyn Johnson all have played and all but Rausaw have started. Then Fehi Vailea, not sure what to expect there but he looks the part. Plus it sounds like JUCO signee Khagen Roach will be an interior guy as well. Had all 3 of these guys stayed I would have argued that we have too many scholarship d tackles, especially considering none are going to be true freshmen. It truthfully would have been an over allocation. Defensive end and EDGE (Devil) is much more concerning from a depth standpoint to me. If we swap two 4th huddle DTs and a 3rd huddle DT for a couple solid EDGE players that would be a really prudent trade off, just strictly speaking from a roster construction standpoint. I wish the kids themselves nothing but the best. The college football numbers game has never been more ruthless. -
WTF? UNT loses another d-lineman to portal

Sure, but they played the same position. Brown was doing what he did while Novil was on the sidelines. I’ll take Sophomore Rod Brown over Senior Richard Abbe, which was my point of you saying we don’t have an Abbe on this roster. -

Rod Brown had as many TFLs and Sacks in 8 games as a true freshman last season than Abbe did in 14 games as a senior.- 54 replies

Yes he is. I left him off the player listing, but did include him in the 12 total scholarships I mentioned, so still one spot left even though I forgot him.
-
COVID year, he still has 3 years of eligibility left even if they list him as a junior. He was a “sophomore” this past season in the same way that McBride was a “senior” this past season.
-
Also, this should put us at 12 scholarship players. Room for one more, assuming no one else jumps ship. Seniors (3): F - Jayden Martinez G - Tyree Eady G - Rasheed Browne Juniors (1): G - Tylor Perry Sophomores (6): F - Abou Ousmane F - Moulaye Sissoko F - Aaron Scott G - Rubin Jones G - Matthew Stone G - Bryce Zephir Freshman (1): F - Chris Morgan

Great get. I expect him to start at the 3 and could potentially get minutes at the 4 if we needed him to. Pretty good rebounder.
-
Yup. And the other problem with getting another big is, unless they can play the 4 spot, there are only 40 minutes to be spread among players at the 5 spot. Abou takes up about 24 of those minutes. We don’t play two traditional bigs at the same time under Mccasland, and he never has as a D1 HC. There are more minutes to fill at off-ball guard with McBride and Murray departing.

Jace Ruder taking lead so far this spring

I think it goes beyond just hopeful fandom. Given his FCS numbers as essentially a redshirt freshman, then when you factor in a reasonable progression arc of a Division 1 QB, it’s really not that hard to see him becoming a serviceable FBS QB. Not to mention he beat out an Iowa transfer for a starting job so he has proved himself compared to an FBS QB. The starting point is tangible enough that it’s not blind conjecture. -
So I was right that you have zero insight on the situation you are commenting on and making bold assertions regarding. BUT, I have now learned, it’s because this is gomeangreen, where one shouldn’t have knowledge on rosters outside of our own or discuss ex players. Even though you are the one who did so in making the claim he would ride the bench at other schools. Now we’re on the same page!
-
Gonna go ahead and guess you have zero actual insight into those rosters and can’t actually give detail on who is going to relegate McBride to riding the bench.

They met at Buffalo. Hamlet was signed out of Northwest Florida State College (JUCO) and Reese was signed out of Odessa College (JUCO). Hamlet mentioned on a podcast that he stayed in touch with Reese and they had essentially agreed to be a package deal, wherever they could go together. So that seemed more to do with them individually than any sort of administrative connection. As for McBride, we obviously played Buffalo and he did pretty well that game. Pretty reasonable deduction why they’d recruit him there. I think it’s more coincidental/circumstantial than some type of coach/admin connection.

UNH Forward Jayden Martinez Commits
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Not hard to imagine him maintaining the offensive rating. Or at least close to it. Whoever we swap in the rotation for JJ Murray will very likely be a big step forward there, plus Perry, Jones, and Abou, Martinez is going to get good looks. He’ll get coached up defensively. If he doesn’t reverse the trend you pointed out, he won’t play as much as he wants. -

UNH Forward Jayden Martinez Commits
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I believe it is June 30 in order to be eligible to play the next season. After that if they’re transferring from another D1 school I think they have to sit out a season. I think traditional grad transfers may be exempt from that date. -
UNH Forward Jayden Martinez Commits
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Basketball
His offensive rating (per 100 possessions) was 121 last year. Bell’s, for reference, was 100.5. The gulf is similar defensively (you want a lower number bc it’s points allowed), Bell had a 90, Martinez had a 106. This is an enormous boost for our offense at the 4 spot, but Mccasland and Hodge are going to really challenge him on the defensive end. He averaged 8.5 rebounds/game in 20-21 so he’s very capable there. I really like this.- 21 replies

Really solid stats. Good scorer, rebounder, and three-point shooter. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4396579/jayden-martinez
