They return 10 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense (including two players who had over 10 sacks) from a team that annihilated Iowa in the bowl game, and we lost all 3 all-conference players from a team that was 0-6 on the road last year. The best team record wise that we've beaten on the road under Coach Mccarney was 4-8 La Tech in 2013 when we had our bowl team. Let's worry about playing good football and finding a way to win any road game before then.

Ranking the Vols' challenges in order of difficulty

They weren't getting much preseason hype that year, but they did start getting some hype once they won their first two games, including at the Georgia Dome against NC State. But Florida ruined that excitement and exposed how poorly Dooley had recruited. -

Ranking the Vols' challenges in order of difficulty

Probably the first time they've received positive reviews nationally since around 2008. But with the way Butch Jones has recruited it seems warranted. They had a top 5 class last year too. -
I think this article gives recruits too much credit. This senior class was in 2nd grade 10 years ago. If they were watching college football then it was the school their parents were fans of. Most kids don't really start watching a good amount of college football until about 7th grade, which would've been 5 years ago for these kids, and the last year of the Dodge era. Even then they would've been watching the schools like Texas, USC, Oregon, Ohio State, SEC, etc. I'd be schocked if more than 5% of the kids we offered so far could name our previous head coach off the top of their head before we offered. These kids have a pretty clean slate when it comes to North Texas football knowledge, so our coaches can really paint these recruits' perception of our program.

Four. Hugh Freeze (now at Ole Miss), Gus Malzahn (now at Auburn), Bryan Harsin (now at Boise State), and Now Blake Anderson. Good athletic directors making those hires. None of those coaches had ever been a head coach at the D1 level prior to getting hired there. Arkansas State knows that it's often better at this level (G5) to hire guys with no experience since you can't pluck away good HCs from other FBS schools. But a good AD can tell who has what it takes to translate to winning football at that school.

Committed to Arkansas State. SN: Arkansas State has picked up 5 commitments today. 10 commits in the last two days, and 16 total. They have a pretty good recruiting staff, again.

Chris Miles -
Okay, gotcha. I never understood that outlook with those two. Neither had any other offers, so I think both were just a couple guys Dodge liked. Didn't have to recruit one to get the other. Could've gotten either individually, but sure did work out great.

Byrd and Chancellor were signed by and played a season under Todd Dodge.

Here are the current team rankings: http://247sports.com/Season/2016-Football/CompositeTeamRankings They currently have our recruiting class ranked 129th, and 13th out of 13 CUSA schools. Keep in mind, there are only 128 FBS schools. This list includes recruiting classes of all division 1 schools, including FCS. Schools like Eastern Michigan, Yale, Harvard, New Mexico State, Austin Peay, Columbia, James Madison, Elonc and Louisiana Monroe are all ranked ahead of us. It's been a very uneventful recruiting cycle, with many offers going out to kids we have little to no shot at. Very early, but it looks like this staff is just behind the times when it comes to recruiting.
-
He's been a guard his whole career, then moved to RT for this spring, where he was listed as the starter heading into spring. As spring progressed Chris Miles emerged at RT and Thompson was bumped in to RG.

'16 QB Easton Underwood (Tennessee)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I think you guys are missing the point. It's not that we aren't recruiting any Texas QBs; it's that we aren't recruiting any QBs this class and this article and Underwood's comments in it make that pretty apparent. We've been recruiting him for almost two years and he's hoping we offer, by the sounds of his comments. It doesn't matter where you get your QB from if he's a good prospect and ends up doing well. We just aren't putting any emphasis on recruiting high school QBs for two straight classes. -

All signs point to no. Rivals and ESPN have listed it for a while, but 247 and scout are the more accurate sites for us, or at least are usually more accurate with G5 prospects. In his comments he basically says we haven't offered when he says he's hopeful we're going to offer. -
Different positions. Ochs was playing RG where he probably would've rotated with Micah Thompson (starter coming out of spring). Now Thompson is the undisputed guy with hopefully a push from Trussell, who was starting there at the beginning of spring.

'16 OL/DL Douglas Tucker (Parish Episcopal)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
That's interesting. While we may remember going head to head with Tulane, like in 2013 for Sergio Medina and in 2012 for Royce Lafrance, those were for Louisiana players. We haven't really gone head to head with them for DFW, or even Texas players. The last time Tulane signed a player from Texas was back in 2012, and that player was from New Braunfels. So they really don't do hardly any recruiting over here. Tucker may choose neither school, but I wonder if they could outrecruit us for a metroplex player, or just Louisiana players. -
Probably more similar situation to Gus Mahlzahn than Todd Dodge.

'16 QB Easton Underwood (Tennessee)
BillySee58 replied to BillySee58's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
They weren't going to get a high school QB either way, unless you count Chumley. If Greer would've lit it up then they would not have gotten a JUCO QB, but that doesn't mean they would've gotten a high school QB instead. They committed to not getting a high school QB well before the season started, which is the same case this year. They'll likely get a JUCO QB if Smith doesn't work out. But if he does work out don't expect them to get a high school QB instead. Just expect no QBs in the class period. If they get a high school QB then it'll be a desperation move after going the entire evaluating process without offering one. And at that point it would be a kid with maybe a few other FBS offers, but likely no other FBS offers. -

The process is not as cut and dry as it sounds like you think it is. With present-day recruiting you can't just wait until the season starts to begin offering senior QBs. The good ones are already long-since committed. I also don't think Smith should have anything to do with whether or not we take a high school QB. Our underclassmen QB are Means and Chumley. That's what the decision should be based on. I do agree that I see a huge chance we pursue another JUCO QB if Smith doesn't work out. Probably darn near 100% if that were to happen. Which would make 5 JUCO QBs in 6 classes. Shoutout to @brettvito though. He often gets a hard time, but this was a big interview for him to get. -

I don't think we're taking a QB. He made it sound like we haven't offered, which is what I was thinking, and we've known about him for almost two years. It would've happened by now. And we would've been pursuing other QBs too. If you want a QB in a class you don't just offer one or two. -

Recruiting is about classes as a whole, not individuals. That 2012 class we signed Harris featured 22 high school signees. Heading into this classes' 4th year on campus only 9 of those players remain, and only 1 of those players is a sure bet to start this season (Harris). Haboul or Wallace will likely start at a DT spot, but not both, so probably 2 starters when we play SMU will be from this class that should be the foundation of this team as seniors and redshirt juniors. 1-2 starters out of 22 signings. It's great to have former walkons and lightly recruited guys like Kirby and Harris contribute, and even start. But when those are the players you are relying on and having to lean on to win games then you put your team at a potential disadvantage. Since we've joined CUSA, Brelan Chancellor*, who had no other offers made the all-CUSA team. Other than him, we have had 7 other players make first or second team all-CUSA. 6 of those 7 had at least 4 FBS offers, while the other was Mason Y'Barbo who had 3 FBS offers and multiple FCS offers. Those have been the guys we have been able to lean on for wins in this conference. The relatively highly recruited guys. Still need them in addition to guys like Harris and Kirby. *SN: Small skill players like Chancellor, Harris, etc, and QBs seem to be the exceptions to the offer list thing. Makes sense. Teams don't recruit them because they're small, but they're not asked to use their size. They're asked to make plays and make people miss. -

He's not saying missed as in they didn't know who he is. He's saying we missed out on him by not offering when we need a good young QB. -

So the player is both the diamond and the rough? Or just the rough? Then who's the diamond? Yes, it's going to happen every year. It doesn't matter if we're getting a class full of highly recruited kids, and winning games. We aren't. That's the problem. Not choosing to not offer kids few, or no, other teams are.
